MadTV's American Idol spoof - VIDEO

This is an old clip from MadTV, but I just found it, so it's new to me, and probably to many of you too. The clip, called "Since We Were On," spoofs the first three seasons of American Idol winners (Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino) and runner-ups (Justin Guarini, Clay Aiken, Diana DeGarmo), as well as Simon Cowell, and the unforgettably-bad William Hung.

I find this sketch to be pretty damn funny. If you're a hardcore Claymate or Justin Guarini fan, be warned that they get the worst of the "mean" jokes. And poor Diana DeGarmo is played by a chubby guy in drag. If you have a twisted sense of humor, you'll love it. However, if you cry when someone makes fun of Clay, you might want to pass on this.


Some of my favorite parts of the sketch:

"Hey, remember me? I'm Justin Guarini. Half black, half white, half talent."

Michael McDonald hissing as Simon Cowell: "Congratulations, you captured my love for music, then you crumpled it up, threw it in a dumpster and pissed on it. Then you took it out of that dumpster, raped it, aborted it, cooked it in a stew and fed it back to me."

I also loved the big finish with each of the Idols incorporating melisma into their final notes. We all know how much the American Idol contestants love using melisma.

That is sooooo mean....

Actually, it was funny. Just one problem. Kelly Clarkson is actually hugely successful, winning grammys, selling millions of albums having multiple hit songs. The rest just faded. Really, how did Taylor Hicks win??? He has no talent, is ugly and overweight too. His album sold something like 134,000 copies and then plummeted off the charts. Meanwhile, just dautry is approaching platinum status. And Fantasia, remember me? I'm Jennifer Hudson, yeah, you knocked me out of idol with your hellium voice. But I got the last laugh. I got the role in Dreamgirls that you wanted. I got it and won a golden globe.

Have their been American Idol finalist who have surprise me? yes, Clarkson, has truly become a multiplatinum recording artist and is even getting good reviews. Jennifer Hudson went on to bigger and better things without even winning. The rest? Who needs them.
