MSNBC's Olbermann calls 24 'fear mongering'

by Meredith O'Brien, posted Jan 17th 2007 6:12PM

Keith Olbermann of MSNBCCountdown with Keith Olbermann featured a segment last night entitled, "Fox scaring you into watching 24?"

During the segment, in which host Olbermann asked whether 24 is "propaganda" and a "program-length commercial for one political party," Olbermann used a plethora of adjectives to describe 24, including "fear mongering" and "naked brainwashing."

Quoting some conservative-leaning web sites which say that the show offers a glimpse of the real terrorism threats being faced by the United States, liberal-leaning Olbermann responded thusly, "By that logic, of course, somewhere in this country, there really is a cheerleader who will never die, there is at least one real-life talking dog and a mother and a daughter who patter back and forth like the Gilmore Girls."

His guest, Robert Greenwald, a documentary film maker who produced the anti-Fox News Channel movie "Outfoxed," said that while he thinks viewers understand that 24 is fiction, it's dangerous to blur fact with fiction, particularly by promoting the idea that "torture works."

Keith Olbermann is such a freakin bitch. I can' stand to watch his show for more than... 10 seconds. Every thing he says pisses me off. Jeez. He needs to get a life. It's a TV show. Not Real.

One or two producers on 24 may be conservative, but the other ones are liberal. They have people from both sides of the AISLE. Their goal is to tell a good fictional story, not pander to any politicial branch. Their Emmys and other awards prove that.

The TV news on 24 is always set to Fox News because the show is a production of 20th Century Fox Television, and it's easier (and cheaper) to get the rights to Fox News logos and anchors than it is to get them from other networks.

this guy is such a joke.

you know they dont 'have' to be in either party, it is afterall, fiction as everyone admits here. it's not possible to be independent these days i guess, candidates can only be for one stance or the other, no grey area here, no sir.

and people, get over which party whoever is in. people get so wrapped up in the 'party system' they lose focus of the issues.

A lot of people took the Sherry character as a take on Hillary, but then again a lot took Logan as Bush.

I think this show is like a Rorshach test to some people. Personally I watch it for the entertainment value and don't take it any more seriously than a James Bond film.

LC, I stand corrected. She does indeed make it clear that he is a democrat.

Does that mean Sherry is based on Hillary?

It's to bad really. I personally think it works better with out any political affiliations being known. They are not important to the story.

I wouldn't count your goal on the scoreboard just yet. That quote was his political STANCES, not his PARTY.

You want proof? well other than inviting you over to watch it together I would say pop in season one episode 18 5pm-6pm where Sherry Palmer is talking to her husband and it quoted as saying:

"Because you're going to win today. You'll have enough delegates by 8:00. You are the Democratic Party's candidate for President whether you like it or not and if you decide to self destruct it will take years for the party's platform to recover."

From the article posted by LC:

Regarding Palmer's political stances, executive producer Howard Gordon says, "Honestly, we haven't thought about it, because God knows what his politics are. I think they're being challenged, though. He's having to do so much improvisation, that it's unclear what his politics are."

LC, It actually says:

"The following takes place between 4am and 5am on the DAY (not eve) of the California presidential primary"

As you can see this statement does not say DEMOCRATIC presidential primary. What you posted is an article written by a critic. That does not prove your point. That person may assume he is a democrat, however that does not make it true.

I don't remember Olbermann crying about "Commander in Chief", and that portrayed something far scarier than nukes detonating in LA: a woman president. Maybe it was okay because her character was a Democrat, huh Keith? Did "the West Wing" bother him too badly? Why not, I wonder?

What a turd. He should stick to pompous baseball analysis because his political insight is laughable.
