NBC's president announces renewals for Office, Earl, SVU, and Heroes - TCA Report

by Joel Keller, posted Jan 17th 2007 1:20PM
NBC logoNBC Entertainment president Kevin Reilly started his network's portion of the TCA press tour by announcing full-season renewals for four shows: My Name Is Earl, Heroes, Law & Order: SVU, and The Office. This means all four shows will be back for new seasons in the fall. Reilly called those shows, and a number of others, "tent posts" that he thinks will bring the network back to a much stronger position than it has been in recent years.

In other news, Reilly announced the pickup of a new improv pilot called Thank God You're Here, where improv comics will don a costume unknown to them, enter a scene, and attempt to improvise through it. It will be hosted by David Alan Grier, and the improv comic's skills will be "judged" by Dave Foley. Where does the name of the show come from? Well, when the comic enters with his costume on, the other comics in the scene will say, "Thank God You're Here!" Clever, ain't it?

More on the executive session later today.

Hey NBC! What about 30 Rock? It's humor is dry, but Alec Baldwin's deadpan acting as Jack Doneghy is supurb and well worth keeping on air!

Thank God You're Here has been hugely successful in Australia and has already had 2 seasons. The success of the US version will indeed live and die based on the quality of the actors/comedians they get week to week. Apparently the US Pilot featured Christopher Guest movie vet Jennifer Coolidge, Bryan Cranston from Malcolm in the Middle, Wayne Knight from Seinfeld and Joel McHale from The Soup (Joel McHale from The Soup?). I think it would be great to see Wayne Knight back on TV!

"Thank God You're Here" is quite popular here in Australia, and getting DAG to host is a great move, if only he can recapture some of his Loveline/Crank Yanker magic.

Way to go NBC - renewing my 3 favorite shows from their network (Earl, Office, Heroes). Things like this don't normally happen, what's wrong? Am I in a parallel universe where network executives make the right decisions?

The "Thank God You're Here" concept has come from Australia, where that version of the show is quite popular. The show will live and die based on the quality of the actors/comedians they get week to week, but it's essentially improv, and can be very funny when done well.
