John Mayer solves Grey's Anatomy crisis

by Bob Sassone, posted Jan 19th 2007 4:34PM

John MayerLeave it to somebody not even remotely associated with a controversy to have a solution for it.

You've probably heard (here and elsewhere) about Isaiah Washington's use of a certain word to describe co-star T.R. Knight during a fight on the Grey's Anatomy set between Washington and Patrick Dempsey. And you've heard about Washington's denial that he used the word, his co-star's outrage that he denied using it, ABC's outrage at Washington in general, GLAAD's outrage over the entire incident, and now news that Washington has agreeed to meet with gay leaders and seek help (whew...hope you followed all that). Now musician John Mayer has come up with a way to solve the entire crisis without kicking Washington off of the show.

Make his character gay! As he says, "What better way for an actor to get to the roots of his discrimination than by portraying the very the subject of his own ire for the remainder of his contract? That'll learn ya!"

Just another thing: Saying that "Izzy" is crazy is just a total loss of understanding of the character. She is very passionate and good and caring. She did what she did for love. I'm not saying it was right (it was very wrong and unethical) but she was moved by love. I would love to meet a passionate health professional like her. We don't see many people with her values. I just think certain sarcastics comments she makes, specially regarding "Dr. Torres" character, are opposite to her "good girl" personality. Maybe she is jealous of "George" and obviously, she is human and consequently, not perfect.

I'm a fan of Grey's Anatomy and I think people are taking this matter too far. It is not appropriate what Mr. Washington said but people make mistakes. If he agreed to talk to gay's leaders I think it proves he regretted it and he is willing to change his behavior. What is lacking to most of people is humbleness and respect to others. One shouldn't offend and the other shouldn't feel so offended. You are what you are and if you are secure with that nobody is going to denigrate it. I also don't think that changing a character sexual orientation is going to change the actor point of view. The polemic already made everybody think about the issue so there is no need for further action or argument. All this just gave more popularity to the show and I don't see a decrease of quality in the show like other person commented. Grey's Anatomy is being great as always and I will continue to watch it like I always do on my comfortable recliner with a glass of a good red wine. It is a shame that the friendship of the two characters in question has changed. I think the solution for the crisis is to avoid putting "George" and "Burke" together and let the dust come down. Nothing heals better then time. Anger is a bad advisor and respect should be there at all times.

Washington can't act anyways, hes just "jelious" of T R Knight U LOSE ABC!!!

I do not think making the doctor gay is any kind of solution at all. What would you do if T.R. "slipped" up and called Washington the "n" word? Make him black? Washington's behavior has ruined the flavor of Grey's. Remember when George was living with Burke and Christina? They had a very close relationship. T.R.'s character looked up to Washington's character in a sort of adoring way. Remember Burke told Christina that it was a "guy thing". May be washington is singing "you've lost that adoring (loving) feeling. Could it be that Washington wants T.R.? No matter I am done with Grey's. The writing in this third season has slipped. Christina's character is not at all likable and I would be scared to death to have a doctor as crazy as Izzy. I miss Denny can they find a way to bring him back, as a look a like?

John Mayer is smart enough to know a lot of his fans are gay guys that want him.

I think the idea is insanely great. Not only make him gay, but make him have several relationships. :)

That sounds like a great idea. Another alternative is a celebrity edition of 30 Days with Washington living in a gay community and having to see the hatred and protest etc. Someone call Morgan Spurlock.
