Smallville: Justice

Smallville -- finally, Justice for all.
(S06E11)
It's finally here, the moment you've all been waiting for. Just check out Clark and crew in their Reservoir Dogs strut and stroll ... or maybe that's more The Magnificent Seven (five). Anyhow, it's a fanboy and/or fangirl's wet dream, and it seems like it's been a long time coming.

Call me crazy, but if there was a whole Justice series, I think it would be a lot more engaging than Smallville has been lately. A team of super-powered individuals working together is what Heroes is slowly becoming, but we've got it here in spades, and well before they'll ever hit it in stride.

Plus, look! Costumes! Granted, Cyborg's is a bit weak, while Clark of course appears in his famous blue t-shirt and red jacket. Ollie and Aquablondie manage to look pretty comic-book authentic. Here's hoping we see more of that. However, Bart's costume is a complete joke. It's basically a complete ripoff of Ollie's, and those red glasses? Ouch. He looked like a gender-confused Little Red Riding Hood.

I also hate it when characters vanish from Smallville, and then just return like they were around the corner getting coffee. Lionel Luthor strolls in and is all "Oh hi, son. By the way, some more LuthorCorp locations were hit. I was just around the corner, picking up a paper." Then we also have the casual drop-in return of Martha Kent, who apparently has enough time to cook Bart a huge meal, despite her senatorial gig. Oh, and Lana Lang? She's conveniently out of town.

Ahh, but we digress from the meat of the episode. Between Lois modeling lingerie, and the Justice League forming for the first time, there's not a lot to find fault with here. Did you catch the name of the company that owns Artemis? The JL Corporation ... a satellite company of Queen Industries. Nice. There were some shades of 'The Dark Knight Strikes Again' with Bart running around in Lex's little trap. Plus, Chloe's code name is "Watchtower" and Bart's is "Impulse." Before the episode was over, there was also a mention of Corto Maltese, where one of Lex's new labs is located. Thanks, Mr. DeKnight. The comic book geek in all of us was in heaven.

I'm still not sure what to think about the ending of the episode. Sure, it was pretty cool that the gang enacted such destruction on Lex's lab ... but the walk towards the camera was a bit much. It's strange to see everyone in costume and exuding superhero charisma except for Clark. I'm not saying he has to don the blue and red tights with the giant S-shield on it, but what about something other than his colored t-shirts and jacket? Just a thought.

So, will Ollie be back? Only time will tell. If you ask me, Lois should have booted his ass awhile ago. Besides, he has to go out and find Black Canary, so he doesn't have time to be canoodling with her. As a whole, I this episode was fairly kick ass on the butt-kicking meter by which all things comic book must be judged.

As an aside, I think Bart and Clark might be onto something with their little side trip to Mexico for burritos -- a super-speedy food delivery service. Just think about the tips they'd make! Before you even hang up the phone, the food is piping hot at your door. Sure, the world needs saving and all that jazz ... but they need to eat too.

Quotes of the show:

Lois Lane to Ollie Queen, when he asks her to take a rain check during a makeout session: "Is it just me, or is this relationship all interruptus and no coitus?"

Bart: "I want a lawyer."
Lex: "And I want a ponytail!"

I like the introduction of blossoming Justice League action that you've introduced to Smallville. But, my problem is with Clark. When looking at how Clark was portrayedin the comic books, or how George Reeves or Dean Kane played Clark, you see they were less negative or depressed in their interpretations. I think Clark needs to lighten up a little. Not a lot, but enough to conform to the Clark standard. You could excuss him since he is young and may not know what he wants to be, or maybe he lacks confidence because he hasn't finished his training with Jorel yet, but he should be better than he is. He needs a lift to his step. Don't get me wrong, I still like the program.

When Clark is in the Mental Hosp. Sorry to say I couldn't really say I liked this one. The noise they used in the background was annoying that my dog whinned through out the show. I also ended up with a headache. Why would you use this noise.. Not even music just a very nasty noise to follow the show.. OK we get it.. He is not himself we don't need an annoying noise through the whole show.. Totally wrecked it for me I will have to read what happeneds because I can't watch any longer..

Actually Batman did make an appearance in the first episode of Birds of Prey. Ugh that was a bad show.

yes, this episode was pretty good. i respect Lex and i like the fact that becomes more evil every time i see him. i wonder how that will play out once he marries Lana. this season or next should be the last one. what we seem to be forgetting is the dicussion between Clark and Raya...once he gets rid of the Zoners, he has to finish his "training". so probably the last episode he will finally emerge into Superman. ugh, finally.

The idea of a Justice League series sounds interesting but as usual there are problems because of Time-Warner being, well Time-Warner. Last night they couldn't call Bart "Flash" or put him in a better costume because TW is apparently developing a movie around the character. They can't use Wonder Woman or Green Lantern for similar reasons. It's one of the reasons why you'll see hints of Clark as Superman but why there aren't going to be any tights. It's why Batman couldn't be on "Birds of Prey" and why we're seeing Green Arrow instead of a young Bruce Wayne.

smallville was getting soft, but this was a change.
i still wonder how they are going to disguse clark
when he decides to put on the tights and fly.
its a goood start for a spin off for the justice
league. or keep the team returning ,(but get real with costumes), add villians, and more damsils in destress.

Best episode since the premire. I'm not a comic geek so I have no idea what any of you are talking about with the corporations being winks to DC but I will agree with that this should be a new series. I would also like Lana to stay in Paris for the rest of the season so they can go back to an action oriented main plot and not the soap opera crap she has brought to this season.

Finally a great episode after all this time. Smallville is my guilty pleasure of bad television, but when it hits the mark it hits the mark. This episode was just plain fun, but now I know we have to trudge through 10 episodes of hunting for Zoners or dealing with the kryptonite-based-villain of the week and they just haven't learned how to get a good blend of mythology and fun on this show. More Justice League. More canon villains (ie: Parasite, Toyman, and definately more Brainiac). This show is good when its exploring who Clark is and will become.

However, when he eventually dawns the big "S" on his chest...uh...how is he going to keep his identity secret? He hasn't ever worn glasses! Did they even think about this when they started the series?

Luthor isn't just going to stare at Supes chest and ignore the fact that Clark's boyish like charms are staring back at him! Think people think!

Oh I suppose they could just "Jor-El" it up and cause mass amenisia of how people remember what Clark looks like. But that's cheap! But then again, its very comic-booky.
