Superhero smackdown: 24 vs Heroes

by Meredith O'Brien, posted Jan 22nd 2007 1:42PM

Jack Bauer on 24The List vs The Nukes.

The indestructible cheerleader vs the counter terrorism agent who, the last time we saw him, was in a crumpled, crying heap on someone's front lawn.

Which program will prevail when they go head to head tonight at 9 p.m.?

TV Guide is reporting that Heroes creators hope that by developing the right kind of buzz via catchphrases ("Are you on the list?") they can help the rookie show take down Jack Bauer, now in his sixth season.

The Boston Globe's TV critic Matthew Gilbert says that, if he had to choose between Heroes and 24, it'd be Heroes because he says it's "much fresher and more original than 24 which is exciting and addictive but . . . come on, 24 is pretty formulaic at this point."

What?? Jack's now a broken man. He killed Curtis, though there are some who've posted comments who are holding out hope that Curtis was faking his death to convince the "good" terrorist that Jack was on his side. (Sorry to break it to those very hopeful fans, but I think Curtis is dead.) We've never seen Jack this dispirited.

So, before the ratings come in I want to know which program you think will prevail, the one featuring old fashioned good guys vs bad guys, or the one with old fashioned comic book superheroes vs powerful villains?

By the way, for those who are fans of both shows ( *I'm raising my hand* ), you could opt to watch CTUers live and then wait for the new episode of Heroes to air on Friday night on the Sci-Fi channel. Or you can just figure out how to use your TiVo or DVR correctly, like this newspaper reporter says he needs to do.

THIS NEW "DAY" ON 24 SEEMS A LITTLE SLOW.JACK SEEMS A LITTLE BURNT OUT. I'LL LET HIM FEND FOR HIMSELF,'CAUSE HEROES HAS BETTER CHARACTERS AND DEEPER STORYLINES.I'LL STICK WITH THE CHEERLEADER AND THE TIME-TRAVELER,AND THE FLYING POLITICIAN,ETC. IF JACK AND AUDREY GET BACK TOGETHER,I'LL COME BACK TO "24".

This is easy. I will watch the one with Rena Sofer playing the wife!

By the way, did anyone else notice that both 24 and Ugly Betty had surprise reveals about siblings in their last episodes?

So what's the point of posting this article "who will win" if you don't follow it up with a "who actually won" corresponding article.

Or I guess they can try the old way and simply be a better show.

And that's why I'll be watching 24...

Heroes doesn't make my list. I record 24 on one tuner; Rome on the other. I like NBC but they're foolish for trying to compete on such a hot time slot.

I record both, but I'll watch 24 live and Heroes later. I can wait to find out what happens on Heroes -- heck, I've waited through all the repeats, haven't I? Besides 24 is my major obsession. As much as I love Heroes, it has to take second.
