Promos for Eddie Izzard's new show - VIDEO

by Anna Johns, posted Jan 23rd 2007 7:37PM
eddie izzardFor my money, Eddie Izzard is one of the funniest comedians around. Who else can make British history from Stonehenge to Reformation hilarious? Or, do a drop-dead funny bit to an American audience while speaking French? But I digress...

This spring, he is co-writing and starring in a dramedy on FX called The Riches (formerly Low Life). His co-star is Minnie Driver, and they play a married couple with children who decide to settle for a life in the suburbs after years of caravaning around with tricky con-artists. No, he will not be playing an "executive transvestite".

Eddie was kind enough to post all three promos for his new show on his MySpace page. In all of them, he seems to be struggling to cover his distinct accent and sound more American. The promos don't really hook me, but the fact that it's Eddie Izzard is why I'll give the series a shot.

One promo is after the jump, the others are here.

Just watched the premiere and it is really good - dark like "Rescue Me..." only networks like FX are doing this kind of excellent work. Both Izzard and Driver are great. Also reminds me of "Six Feet Under" because the plotline is so out-there. I hope this catches on. Love it.

If you know any of Eddie's previous work, it's laughable to say that he's just another "stand-up comedian." This is a dark comedy, not a sit-com. It's probably not a family show. The plot may not seem funny at first, but think about a family of gypsy con-artists trying to adjust to living as Southern socialites. There's a real possibility for laughs there.

Also, I notice a lot of promotion during King of The Hill; the show is being promoted to a certain audience.

Post 1: I have a feeling you are going to be wayyyy wrong.

First, Eddie Izzard is one of those Michael Caine types that makes projects better just by being in them, so don't write him off as an "executive transvestite" comedian until you've seen in "Shadow of the Vampire" and "Cat's Meow." He's a serious actor.

Second, I haven't seen clips yet, but this is almost certainly NOT going to be a fat-comedian-and-hot-wife stupid sitcom. It's on FX and it's (AFIK) an hour-long show, so I think this is going to be more along the lines of "Dirt" or "Rescue Me" than "According to Jim"

Third, I doubt it will last "half a season" because FX nearly always shows the full order of its original shows, so chances are we're going to see all 13.

That's not to say it's a guaranteed winner, but give it a chance.

I had seen the teaser before, and thought it seemed kinda cool. But after actually reading the plot, not so much.

Oh Joy. Another stand-up comedian with a sitcom that puts him in the 'burbs with a wife and kids. That will last about half a season. He deserves a better show then that. I would rather see him play an "executive transvestite".
