Veronica Mars: Show Me The Monkey

(S03E10) Well folks, don't get used the this new semi-season-long mystery, as everything said recently by Rob Thomas and crew indicates this will be the last of them.

Here's my problem with the idea of no long mysteries. Sure, there are a lot of what I call "mini-mysteries" for Veronica to solve all season long, and we've seen our share of them on this show. But can we really tolerate and believe that she's going to have a new mystery every week? I guess if it worked for Scooby-Doo it'll work for Veronica, eh? But I guess what I feel will take me away from this show is their over-reliance on relationship drama as the glue that holds everything together. Yuck.

Anyway, I digress.

I think everyone knew or at least assumed that V's perfect murder paper would come into play with O'Dell's murder, and sure enough there it is. Already I'd say Time the TA from earlier in the season is suspect number one, even though the interaction between Keith and Prof. Landry was so intense -- best part of the episode.

So was it just me or was "Ed Argent" supposed to be a play on "Ted Nugent", the rocker/bow hunter? Pretty obvious to me, but maybe some of you missed that.

Something that I guess we're left to interpret on our own is some of the loose ends from the last mystery of the season, like the hair shaving during the rapes and how Mercer could pull off a call-in show and have a recording playing.

Random note: Hey, what people were saying about Weevil were true -- turns out Francis Capra was on some medication that made him a bit zitty and overweight earlier and the season, and he's looking more himself now.

I know I've seen the actor who's playing Mac's new love interest before. He looks kinda One Tree Hill-ish, but I can't quite place him. In any case, like the rest of you I hope this relationship doesn't go sour like Mac's last.

And as for Piz trying to woo Veronica a bit, I actually found myself saying "thank GOD" when V was at Logan's door later in the episode. I'm not liking the idea of Piz with Veronica, but then again I have to remember what Logan was like at the start of season one -- look where he is now. But, alas, Piz will have his chance again soon.

Quote of the episode:

Mac: "...The second amendment is my favorite."

i think that her and piz will be a showy kind of relationship. it will look nice to people and seem almost faiey tailish at times, but both her and piz will see that they arent right for each other. that will send her back running to logan. i think logan is a good guy and they are good for each other they just need to get all of their priorities straight before they try to pursue this relationship.... again.

and on duncan, things always seemed a little odd.

but then again weevil has always been there for her, even when she "had to pick sides" they seem to care a lot for each other so there is always that route..

i dont know just throwing out opinions.

plus maybe its just that i have a little soft spot for logan. he stuck by her, and yeah he's screwed up but he tries to fix it.

it's kinda like that jimmy fallon song idiot boyfriend where he talksabout all of that stupid stuff that he does, but yet he's still her boyfriend.

First of all, Logan is cool, he really grew on me. We waited two years for Logan and Veronica to get together, god splitting them up again would piss me off. It would turn the show into Smallville. Always dangling romance, but taking it away before it satisfies. You've brought them together, now it's time they make it last. The rest of you, stop complaining.

Also, Mini-mysteries are cool, but you need an overlying arch that makes you want to come back to see what happens next. the relationships between the characters help with that, so keep that up, but seriously, we need a little epic plotting here. Don't wanna kill the main characters, what about characters we grew to like in previous seasons, that magically disappeared. Like that one girl who was with Wallace in Season 2 (What's her name? The waitress?). She should get shot, or killed in some creative fashion, and then Wallace finds out, and gets Veronica on the case. Also it would be interesting to see her go outside Neptune on occasion, to solve crimes. and not just to mexico. Veronica in New York would be interesting. Veronica in Canada, would be cool. Britain, Moscow, she should travel a bit, could be fun.

I do love this show, but where's the Canadian love...I just started watching a couple weeks ago, watched seasons 1 and 2 in a marathon, but now what. I can't watch season 3, because they're 10 episodes in. I tried downloading the episodes of Itunes, but I live in Canada, and apparantly they are racist or something. Who knew. I'm so distraught.

I know that supposedly Rob Thomas reads comments on many a Veronica Mars site so hopefully he's reading this:

Veronica Mars is one of the best written characters ever on tv...for the first two seasons. Season 3 is so "WB'd/CW'd" like glossed over. I downloaded the first two seasons of Veronica Mars this summer when one episode caught my attention on the UPN. I watched season one in two days and season two in a few more. Since then I have only watched the new episodes and although they are ok I didnt realise how different they were from season one.

In the past week I had the opportunity to rewatch some of the season one episodes and realised I had forgotten how GREAT of a show it was. Seriously I like it more than I like Heroes now. And that's a problem. I think the CW should renew the show, make tuesdays less "Girly" and more gritty. Of course the CW has a hard time seeing if the merger was a success, because honestly its just not that great. Its a mess. Tell the network to stop trying to attract teenage girls that shop at American Eagle and focus on EVERYONE 18+

Keep the long mysteries. If millions of people can hang on to Desperate Housewives and Heroes or Ugly Betty, than they can hang on to V.Mars even if they just happen to drop in once in a while.

I have so much to say, so if you're listening Rob Thomas, feel free to email you. As a 19 year old male in college, I NEVER watch the CW execept Tuesdays at 8pm central to root for my girl Veronica, I just honestly hope its renewed and reinvented/reverted back to Season ONE-like style.

I would like to say that I am a huge fan of VM but not someone that watched from Season 1 like many of you. I started on the show last season and I admit I was pretty lost starting from the middle of a mystery. During the massive UPN re-runs I caught up on the show and figured out everything I'd missed. I liked the beginning of this season the Hearst rapist storyline was very well written and very smart. Between the women faking a rape, the frats seemingly upping their debauchery, the hatred Veronica gathered by not jumping in line with the lilith ? house girls, to it being revealed as a two man operation. All great. Plus, who didn't love the rush week episode with Veronica pretending to be drunk. I'd like for the show to form a two or possbily three mystery format... I'm not sure how I'll feel about the whole mystery of the week thing... The minor mysteries have always been a fun distraction but the season long mysteries are what make the show special. Monk, Psych, Law and Order, CSI, Bones, all these shows fit a certain pattern. Battlestar Galactica, Heroes, Lost, fit into another. Veronica Mars is different from all these shows. I don't know why it always falls to the writers/creators of the show to grow it's audience. The CW should do extensive advertising...before the season starts. Tell everyone that this is one hell of a show that needs to be seen from the beginning. It's not Smallville, which I haven't been able to stomach since season 3, or Supernatural, which I couldn't stand after watching the pilot. 24 is nearly impossible to pick up after episode 5, but it's one of the top 10 shows on television... because Fox pumps the dollars behind it. The CW will never be able build a huge advertising blitz... but this show doesn't need that.. During the off season shoot a couple of you tube video mysteries... that are 5-7 minutes apiece... make 3-5 of these mini episodes and give them a myspace account. Have them each be a self contained mystery but all 5 episodes have an over lying mystery for Veronica to solve as well, just like the show... hell you can make it some kind of a contest where the answer to the mystery is given out at the beginning of Season 4's premiere. Put them up on blogs like this one and other VM sites all over the net and let the fans push them onto their friends and family. I know it's easy for me someone that doesn't work in television to say but it's what I would do. (Also I am in film school and hope to be working in televsion in the not too distant future) I just don't feel it's a good plan to pull an aspect of the series that makes it unique to pull in this ficticious large group of people that don't watch the show because it's too hard to get into midway. Advertise it well enough and people will watch Curling on the winter olympics...

You shouldn't have any sympathy for Piz if he isn't going to be honest with Veronica about his feelings for her. Nice (aka passive) guys finish last.

Logan isn't afraid to say what's on his mind, hence his appeal.

I wish she would at least consider Piz. I've never seen any chemistry with Logan. I just want to slap her and tell her that when she's 30 she'll wish she had given the nice ones a chance.

I don't mind relationship drama in the context of the larger mystery. But it should never become the purpose of the show, like it is in say The OC.

And this mini mystery was one of the worst. It just wasn't as clever as what I have come to expect.

I agree with Ted. I was disappointed in Keith being so clueless or maybe oblivious is the right word.

I do not mind the mystery of the week as long as it is interesting. Unless they have filmed all of the episodes why not restructure the current arc to cover more episodes?

I dunno, we bought the Monster of the Week episodes on Buffy/Angel for how long? I think if going to a Mystery of the Week format is what keeps Veronica on the air, I'm willing to give it a shot. And I think the interviews I've read with the creator hit it -- none of the season-long mysteries will be as good as the ones the first and second season because unless you kill somone like Wallace or Mac off, there isn't a lot of emotional involvement for all of the characters. And I don't want Mac in any danger!
