When 24 blows up your hometown

by Meredith O'Brien, posted Jan 23rd 2007 5:30PM

Map of ValenciaLA Daily News entertainment editor Robert Loman was ticked off after he finished watching 24 last Monday night.

He wanted to know why the creators of 24 decided to wipe out his hometown of Valencia, CA with a suitcase nuke in hour four of its sixth season.

"In Valencia?" Loman wrote. "Hey, we practically invented soccer moms."

So indignant was he that he called 24 executive producer Howard Gordon to find out why they chose to detonate the nuclear bomb in Valencia and not, say, in Burbank, or a some fictional California community. Gordon told Loman that they "liked the sound of Valencia." Loman then went on to interview a city councilor who mused that this probably wasn't the kind of civic promotion that would please the local chamber of commerce.

I'm just a few miles north in Castaic but the location they showed as Ground Zero is so far north in Valencia there is infighting as to whether it is actually part of Castaic.

So I guess I'm a goner, too. And I don't even watch that show.

hrmph.... My hometown (Washington DC) seems to get hit on almost every TV show (yeah, I am looking at you Jericho) that involves the US getting attacked or Nuked. The only other people that can understand this are the people from the good city to our north, NYC. Sorry if I feel enjoyment that its not my hometown....

"[Why] In Valencia?" Loman wrote. "Hey, we practically invented soccer moms."

He answered his own question.

As a longtime resident of Valencia and fan of "24", I can tell you that they love using the surrounding area as their go to place that is LA but not LA.

They've made it home to Kim and Teri's kidnappers, a secret underground prison, a massive trainwreck, a cougar with a taste for starlets, liquor store robberies, Kevin Dillon the survivalist, and numerous other random things.

On a positive note, the bomb wasn't intended to go off in Valencia.
