NY Mag's 24 absurd-o-meter

Apparently I'm not the only one who's skeptical about the fact that 24's Jack Bauer has a brother named Graham who not only had a direct line to the president but could also -- for some undisclosed reason -- order the leader of the free world around, telling him to do evil deeds, including to off Graham's sibling.

New York magazine's blog, "Daily Intelligencer" has commenced a weekly 24 "Absurd-o-Meter," where the blog will count down the most preposterous plot developments in the latest installment of the terrorism drama. Other than the Jack-has-a-brother revelation, New York found it insane that cell phones would still be working so soon after a nuclear detonation. (Apparently they didn't get the memo that Jack is impervious to cell phone disruptions or dropped calls. When a cell phone is in his hands, it works like magic.)

If I were making this list, I'd throw the Chloe-Morris-Milo troika into the "absurd" category, as well as the "love child" rumors.

I can understand people's disbelief over Jack having an evil-doing brother (and possibly dad as well) without knowing about it for the 5 seasons.

However, this was just revealed 40 minutes into the last episode. Let's give the writers the benefit of the doubt for now. The next few episodes have the potential for good and smart writing pertaining to background details about Grey and Jack's relationship.

One of my favorite absurd bit was from last season. Jack "programming" his memory stick to self destruct.

Couldn't agree more with the above 3 the show is fun bottome line. The fact that all of everything takes place in one day gives in to reality and what's enjoyable is taking a part of the show that is so absurd and trying to come up with crazy reasons why it could really happen. Love the show can't wait until 9pm Monday.

I agree with both Paul and Gord.

Also, on the cell phone thing, people should also remember this season of 24 isn't taking place in 2007. Its probably more like 2010? Hopefully by then they would have the kinks worked out in the cell industry for emergency situations. Plus isn't like 2008 or 9 that the gov't is suppose to be taking over all the Nextel towers for strictly gov't use?

I totally agree with Paul...why do people have to analyze t.v. and movies to death. I watch t.v. and movies because I want to get away from reality and watch something that is totally unbelievable.
I hate when people come out of a movie and say they couldn't enjoy it because something was not believable. If you want to watch something that is believable, watch "A&E" or "History".
Just sit back and enjoy the ride and don't think so much.

I was really disappointed by the family revelations too. To enjoy 24 requires suspension of disbelief, but the writers have always done a superb job of not having it be distracting from the entertainment.

However, this family stuff is really over the line.

Oh come on, it's just a TV show. Every show has some level of absurdity. Hasn't anyone learned anything in their High School English class about the suspension of disbelief. Stop trying to analyze every little bit of action in a TV show. It's a good show, it's fun to watch and Jack is invincible. Who cares if cell phones shouldn't work after a nuclear blast so quickly. I mean can there really be a man that's as good as Jack Bauer? Can someone like that really exists that the President of the US requests him and only him to deal with a terrorist threat, even though he's locked away by the Chinese. That concept in and of itself is just absurd, but we watch the show anyways, cause we wish there is someone like him. When was the last time you watched a TV show where everything made sense and is logical. It's called fiction people.

On a side note, I finally got to seeing little Miss Sunshine today and discovered Mary Lynn Rajskub (Chloe) playing a pageant worker in that film. She barely has two lines. I wasn't even sure it was her the first two times she was on screen. But finally her face was clear and I thought good for her to just keep working. Now that movie was absurd, but good. About her little love triangle, first she holds a gun and shoots people, now she's becoming a player...good for her.

I'd like to see them go all out and have Jack stopping a Martian invasion next season.
