Medium: Better Off Dead

John Polito(S03E09) After what I considered an off week, Medium is back with another good episode. This thing was just bizarre, but in the good way. It's one thing for Allison to talk to ghosts, we've seen that before, but it is an entirely different thing when that ghost actively works against her solving his murder. Morgan's repeated attempts to hide the truth had her just as confused as those of us watching. Probably more than us. I think most viewers probably had figured on Nick as the trigger-man long before Allison, but the why was much more important than the who.

The character of Morgan (Ben Weber) was a nice twist to the usual Medium idea. His interactions with Allison were very well done. I especially liked the scene where he realized that she was watching him and Vincent in her dream and he called her on it. Their best scene though, was in the interrogation room when she was taunting him with the idea that she would reveal all of his secrets to Cadence. He was so nervous and Allison seemed to revel in finally getting the upper hand.

We can't forget to mention Vincent (John Polito, pictured). He added a lot of humor and fun to the episode. Polito is one of those actors that is instantly recognizable, but hard to place. I always think of him as Donald Stern from The Chronicle, but in looking at his credits, he's been in some 40-odd shows that I have seen. I liked his story here. His was a grisly death, and how crazy was that scene where Gladys just matter-of-factly breaks out the saw to start cutting him up? In the end, it was nice that he went to Allison to fill in the blanks in Morgan's story because it was the right thing to do.

There was also a good example of something that the show was lacking last week. Bridgette's diorama wasn't a huge story, and certainly wasn't central to the overall plot, but it was fun. And more importantly, it added something to involve the girls and Joe. It was cute when Allison remarked about the old woman in the boat, much to Joe's chagrin. And the whole thing was capped off nicely with his pride in the A+ that he Bridgette received.

Not a lot for Scanlon and Devalos to do this week, which isn't too far out of the norm. This was much more an Allison story, so they were relegated to the office to tidy things up. That's ok, and I did enjoy the gotcha scene where the three of them ganged up on Nick, but I am looking forward to getting a couple episodes that feature the two of them in more central roles. Overall, a really good episode. It was something unexpected and that's always fun.

6. Can anyone tell me the music that was used at the beginning and end of the episode?"

For mauispiderweb. The music is: It's "And When I Die", by Blood, Sweat and Tears. I just found the answer on the TV.com Forum.

Medium's episode of 1/24/07 titled "Better Off Dead. I thought for sure that the character of Morgan Turly played by Ben Weber resembled actor Tom Hanks. I thought that this must be the son of Tom Hanks. I missed the credits and have been searching out the cast ever since. Did anyone else see the resemblance including his mannerisms?

Can anyone tell me the music that was used at the beginning and end of the episode? It's driving me crazy, cause I know that I know it, but I can't figure it out. I keep thinking it's from a Broadway show. Thanks in advance for any help!

We actually got to see more of Scanlon in this ep than the last two. I'm so glad - he adds so much to the show. It doesn't hurt he is drop dead gorgeous and has a smile that will melt you right there on the spot! I kept expecting him to hit on Cadence! She came off as very sweet after we found out for sure she had nothing to do with the scam. I hope they do more with Scanlon - with his background secrets we found out about in seasons 1 and 2, surely they could come up with some juicy complications or stories primarily involving him.

TomB, I haven't really heard much about the behind the scenes goings on at Medium. But now that you mention the chaos, I'm curious. I'll see what I can find out.

I agree, Brett. This episode was back on track after last week. That isn't saying too much, though, because Medium has set the bar pretty high for itself.

Although I love the show and really liked this episode, while watching I couldn't help but think, "is this Medium or Ghost Whisperer?" Having Allison interacting with the "ghosts" was a different take on things.

Brett, do you know anything about the behind the scenes aspect of the show? I've read elsewhere that it's "chaos" on the set and behind the scenes.

I always think of Jon Polito as "that guy from "Homicide". =)
