What to Watch Jan. 29 - Feb. 4

by Kelly Woo, posted Jan 29th 2007 11:02AM

Heroes on NBC and Ugly Betty on ABCDon't you just love looking at the week's TV schedule and seeing "New" splashed everywhere? That's my Christmas morning. So, there's plenty of new stuff choose from, but here are AOL Television's picks for what to watch this week.

Heroes (Mon., 9PM, NBC)
Casting directors can be so genius sometimes. George Takei as Hiro's father? Never would've thought of it myself, but it totally works. Hiro's dad could never be some random Japanese guy. He's gotta have the gravity to complement Masi Oka's off-the-walls energy. Mr. Nakamura turns out to be a severe, harsh guy who doesn't approve of his son's quest to be a hero. Here's an idea to fix that: Give dear old Dad some powers, too.

Road Rules: Viewer's Choice (Tue., 9PM, MTV) 14th season premiere
'Road Rules' is still alive? Yep, MTV has resuscitated the reality series returns after a three-year hiatus. Thank goodness, we need new blood in the 'Real World/Road Rules Challenge' (very important). This new edition of 'Road Rules' features six "infamous" former contestants, who can be voted out and replaced with another alum by YOU the almighty viewer. After all, YOU were also Time magazine's Person of the Year. Don't let all the power and glory go to your head.

Top Chef (Wed., 10PM, Bravo) 2nd season finale
It's Ilan vs. Marcel, folks, and I'm rooting for the underdog, Marcel. Sure, he's a snide, superior show-off. He's a geek who likes to make foam. But does that really deserve the derision of all his fellow contestants? Cliff wrestling him to the ground to shave his head? Elia alleging that he cheated, with no facts to back up her claim? No. He clearly loves food, he enjoys innovating and he's got skills. But no more bad rap/poetry, please. Stick to the culinary arts.

Ugly Betty (Thu., 8PM, ABC)
Here's the truly ugly side of New York's Fashion Week: traffic jams, crowded restaurants and if you do get into a show, waiting for two hours because Beyonce is late. Betty experiences these delights when Mode puts on its own runway spectacle, attended by luminaries like Tim Gunn and Katharine McPhee. Unfortunately, a "shocking revelation" stops the show. No doubt it has to do with Daniel's not-so-dead, not-so-male brother, Alexis.

Super Bowl's Greatest Commercials 2007 (Fri., 9PM, CBS)
It's time to unseat Mean Joe Greene. The Coca-Cola commercial featuring the Pittsburgh Steeler aired in 1980, for heaven's sake. Are we really saying that no commercial in the last 27 years has topped that treacly sapfest? Come on! CBS gave viewers a chance to vote on 15 memorable commercials -- including Cindy Crawford's Pepsi ad and Apple's infamous "1984" ad -- and the winner will go head-to-head with Mean Joe Greene in a live vote.

Super Bowl XLI (Sun., 6:25PM, CBS)
So, I admit, I don't really watch football. College basketball is more my thing. But on this one day out of the year, I watch the Super Bowl because, well, everybody else is (lemming, thy name is Kelly). Plus, the rest of the channels are a TV wasteland. Still, it's always fun to see the millions of dollars wasted on 30-second ads (see Friday's pick). Keep your eye out for the one with Kevin Federline as he always ought to have been -- a fast food worker.

Wildcard - Pants Off Dance Off: Best Of (Tue., 10PM, Fuse)
Get ready for the biggest event of the year Sunday. No, not the Super Bowl -- the Prancer Bowl. Watch the best season two moments, then see top pancers vie to be the 'Dance Off' champion.

Why would anyone watch something that's entirely made up of commercials? Are we in the future of Demolition Man?
