So...how long will Rules of Engagement last?

by Bob Sassone, posted Feb 1st 2007 2:21PM

David SpadeCBS is really promoting Rules of Engagement, the new comedy starring David Spade and Patrick Warburton. It seems like they're running an ad for the show on every other TV show that they have. But will this show be a success, or be just another midseason sitcom that gets pulled quickly?

I haven't seen the show yet, but the cast is funny. Both Spade and Warburton are funny no matter what they're in (I have no opinion of Oliver Hudson - not even sure if I've ever seen him in anything before). Warburton was funny in Seinfeld and The Tick, and Spade...well, a lot of people hate him, but I think he's a riot. Sure, he does one thing (horny, slightly sleazy guy with quirks), but he does it really well. Just Shoot Me wouldn't have been the same without his character, and I actually think that he's the reason 8 Simple Rules lasted so long after John Ritter passed away. The dynamic of the show changed and was actually improved somehow after Spade (and James Garner) were brought on board.

So will Rules of Engagement be a surprise hit, or will be just fade away into oblivion? (I guess there's a third option, the Yes, Dear option, where a show no one seems to watch or talk about somehow stays around for 25 years).

The seems really promising. I would love to see the return of Puddy!

I read a pretty favorable review this morning.

I caught a preview of this show last year, and it was hilarious.

David Spade is NOT the star of the show, but he is one of the funnier characters. He plays the 'single' friend.

Patrick Warburton stole every scene he was in. He has a great delivery, and if you liked him on Seinfeld, you should like him here. He's the married one on the show.

Oliver Hudson is the newly engaged guy (the show is about an engaged couple and their friends). Of all the characters, his was the least interesting, but hopefully that'll change.

I'd definately encourage people to watch. I know I'll catch at least a couple of episodes. If all the shows are that funny, this could easily be a hit.

How could it lose with Brock Samson in it?

You know...I'm gonna give it a go. I, too, found Spade funny (and James Garner, too!) on 8 Simple Rules. It couldn't be any worse than 'In Case of Emergency'!!

It'll be gone by May and forgotten by June.

Isn't this show basically "'Til Death" with a couple of additional characters?

Since David Spade is starring, I'd say this is one-and-done. As in one episode.

Spade + Warburton = Great potential combination.

But now what this show needs is Eartha Kitt and John Goodman. Because those four are what made "The Emperor's New Groove" one of the few recent traditionally animated Disney films I absolutely love. It is downright brilliant. I don't see this sitcom reaching that level without Miss Kitt and Mr. Goodman. Or hell, even remotely near that level without them.
