Has long-haired 'Idol' contestant been disqualified?

Sean MichelHe looks like Osama bin Laden, Fidel Castro, and Jesus all rolled into one. And when Sean Michel first appeared at the Memphis auditions, I thought he was one of those bizarre bombs the producers were going to drop on us. Instead, Michel surprised us all when he sang an amazing version of Johnny Cash's "God's Gonna Cut You Down."

But now it seems that Michel's fifteen minutes in the spotlight may already be up. According to Internet buzz, despite Michel's singing talent, he was disqualified from the competition during the Hollywood round because of his refusal to cut his long locks and shave his scruffy beard.

Reality TV Magazine contacted Sean Michel to discuss the rumor, but Michel was mum due to an Idol confidentiality agreement. However, Michel did confirm that he HASN'T shaved his beard or cut his long hair at all.

If Michel has been disqualified because of his looks, it would be a real shame. He has a great voice, and seems like a nice guy. Of course, I was shocked during Michel's audition when Randy Jackson said, "it doesn't matter what you look like, you can blow." Because all along, Simon Cowell has pointed out -- Idol is an image competition as much as it is a singing competition. My prediction after Michel sang was: "Without a major makeover, Sean will not make it to the Final 12."

If the disqualification rumors are correct, then I applaud Michel's refusal to change who he is for the American Idol producers. While I agree he doesn't look like a typical American Idol, I still think he would be fun to watch in the Final 12. And besides, it seems a little harsh to disqualify a guy for the crime of poor grooming.

Ultimately, I think the producers should let the people decide. Let the guy sing. Who knows? Maybe America is ready for an Idol who looks like Fidel Castro.

I saw a clip of this guy years ago and it left such an impression that without knowing is name or what competition it was I've searched the internet to find out more and hear him again. Get him on a show that goes for talent over looks and watch him get through to the finals.

It's unbelievable that he's not in the final 12.... nobody that listen to him singing give a damn to his look!

If it were a TRUE "singing only" competiton, with no basis put on looks, then everyone would audition from behind a screen, where the judges could not see them, but only hear them.
Unfortunately, America likes their Idols to look a certain way, even if they aren't the best singers.
How else do you explain the success of Britney, Hilary Duff or even Paula Abdul herself?

Idol never produces artists with any originality or longevity, everything is too shallow, and based on what they think the public will like. It's all bullshit.

Oh come on people...... seriously?

I happen to know Sean and he's a good guy.... Strong morals and values, a great personality and yes, a hell of a voice- So, talk all you want, doubtfully he cares about your snide remarks about his hair.

However, it saddens me personally. Is this what we all have become? Critics of a reality TV show? It's a show..... it's not this mans life! He is a person, just like you and I.

What is happening here should be a crime, not having long hair.

It amazes me what we all have become and how narrow our minds have gotten. Sine when can people not look past facial hair and see a person? It's just hair. Have you nothing else to talk about? And, what if he did have a shaved face and geled, shall we say, hair? What would you say about him then?

It's just a show..... just an overrated TV show. Don't be so quick to judge.

this guy really threw me off when he started singing. I did not mean to stereo type(regardless) but I did not expect him to have that kind of talent. My thinking is that he came out there looking like that for the shock factor, it sure made everyone obviously take a deeper look. Maybe it was a really great way to get them "too" look hard at a guy who probably has average (or less than) looks. If there is a hottie under there it sure will be fun to see the jaws drop when he comes out on stage cleaned up. I think if he decides to pick a whole new style of music and looks. It will truley show how diverse he is. Maybe a tux and some frank sinatra.lol but he definately needs to trim that beard !!

I am hearing all this crap about being an idol and looks. Sean Michel is actually in a christian band. How much better of a role model can you get?

Update: I would swear that in tonights montage of the Hollywood round, I saw someone wearing a shirt and hat that looked an awful lot like mr jesus castro. However, this person had short hair and only some stubble... perhaps he did cut his hair?

No clue. I'll wait to see if he shows up next week, but they really really liked his voice and new exactly what he looked like, so my personal thought is that the disqualification is nothing more then a rumor...

I wonder what Willy Nelson would say about this.

Oh my gosh, Willie Nelson's status as one of America's idols should be nullified. Dosen't he miss the profile also with his long hair and scruffy beard?
