Hey America, are you talking about Studio 60 today?

by Bob Sassone, posted Feb 6th 2007 10:33AM

Amanda PeetThe previews hammered it home a thousand times this past week: this episode of Studio 60 would be the one that "America will be talking about." So I have to ask America: are you talking about it this morning?

I don't bring this up to dig into the episode specifically (though the two-part "Harriet Dinner" episode was certainly the worst so far). I like the show. I bring it up to point out that network promos these days are overdone, overhyped, misleading and/or confusing. They usually don't make sense or are disappointing when it comes to everything from ER to Lost, but this one was truly odd. Why would America be talking about this episode when America hasn't really been talking about the show so far? The moment they were talking about, I assume it was the kiss between Danny and Jordan? OK, nice moment, and the second part of this ep was better than the first by a longshot, but I hardly think it's something that we're talking about in any major way. Danny and Jordan aren't Sam and Diane yet, or Dave and Maddie.

Maybe they meant Ugly Betty star America Ferrera?

I stopped watching two episodes ago, not wanting to invest any moe time in this show that I felt wasn't going anywhere. I checked these comments out of curiosity, and it looks like I'm nt missing anything.

Well, I'm talking about my shock that Sorkin MISSED the STORY! It's supposed to be a drama about backstage studio 60...and they end the episode 24 hours to air, when they should be rehearsing camera and set movements, without a stage (and a few sketches that aren't there yet)!

It's still the only show I watch and despite the fact that it should be MUCH better, I am looking forward to next week's flashback. The characters need the backstory and Sorkin has done them well in the past.

Studio 6o can't hold Heroes' jock. Where Heroes is mysterious, suspenseful, and exciting, 60 is stale, boring, and preaching.

I love studio 60 and do not watch heroes-
are they the same type of show?
why would nbc think a lover of that show would stay and watch studio 60? or vice versa
the networks are insane
i wish studio 60 was on cable

All I have to say is, did the Chinese guy have to know how to speak English? I mean seriously, have we not already been inundated with cliche over the past few weeks?

And why is friggin' Bob Sassone back? Jay is far superior- give him back to us TVSquad!

TV promos are awful in general. NBC decided that "Save the Cheerleader, Save the World" was a catchphrase, when it wasn't. But they shoved it down our throats enough that we all know it, and for me it's one of the few things about Heroes that I don't like.

The worst, though, were the old WB promos for the Gilmore Girls. It'd always be "Tonight, on an all new Gilmore Girls..." and then they show something that happens at 8:55. Worst of all, they'd show that promo at 7:59 right before the episode started, so it was hard to avoid, and fresh in your mind.

In general I try to avoid them entirely, just cause they're annoying and spoilery. By this point in the season I watch the shows I watch, and skip the shows I don't. So the only way a promo's going to change my mind is if it's "Tonight, on CSI: Miami, Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel guest star as two women who can't stop making out with each other."

how can the show get a better lead in than heroes? i find the interaction between hughley and the kid from accepted to be interesting, but unfortunately its falling on deaf ears. the animal/PETA bits were good but the show in itself is definetly on its way out the door.

You said, "Anyone else notice that, ahem, we are all talking about Studio 60? The promos were right, in that sense."

That's a false positive. We're only talking about it because we are TV geeks. The rest of the country is asking, "Aaron who?"

I just looked at all my Studio 60 posts, and you can see where I get more and more disappointed until I just stop watch.

Last night? Family Guy reruns.

Oh, and as an addendum, Heroes is an awesome show, and gets great ratings, etc etc. I love it. But I think, in general, its demo is way wrong to be followed up by Studio 60.

I have no idea what a good lead-in for S60 would be, however. This is why I'm not in charge of a network.

Then again, most of the people in charge of networks don't have a clue either.

I'm puzzled. Early on, when people at this blog were falling all over themselves to LOVE this show, I thought it was good, not great. I guess "promising" is probably the word that I would use. Now, the show is starting to really hit it's stride and people here seem to HATE the show and everything about it. I think the writing has been steadily getting better each show, the cast is getting more and more comfortable in their roles and we are FINALLY getting to know more of the characters than just Danny, Jordan, Matt and Harriett.

As far all the talk about cliches goes, television is a farily formulaic medium and I have yet to see a show that doesn't regularily use cliched plot ideas (including the West Wing AND Sports Night - both of which I loved). Much like other formula based fiction (mysteries and fantasy spring to mind) the artistry is in what's done with those cliches. Jordan and Danny locked out on the roof is certainly and old, old cliche that we've seen many times but, it was used on the show to give us an opportunity to learn more about those characters and to watch two excellent actors who have a ton of chemistry work together.

Finally, as to the ratings "tanking", I will grant you that the ratings for this show have been low but they have most certainly NOT been tanking. They've actually held very steady since the drop following the first episode. Studio 60 is up against one of the most popular shows on television AND it's the type of show that is going to take some time to develop it's audience. It is true that NBC may not have the patience to let it do so but, that doesn't make it a bad show. NBC was losing this time slot every week BEFORE Studio 60 even went on the air.

So, there ya go, my two cents worth.
