Project Runway's Jay McCarroll on Tim Gunn

by Julia Ward, posted Feb 7th 2007 1:08PM
Jay McCarroll Project RunwayApparently, back in the day, Tim Gunn expressed disappointment that season one Project Runway winner Jay McCarroll hadn't debuted a collection by the age of 29. Well, Jay would like you to know that he's "not bitter" about that comment, but it was "hurtful." In the February 4th issue of New York Magazine, McCarroll goes on at length about Tim Gunn, and it's not pretty, Runway fans. (If you're offended by profanity, you may want to close your eyes for this next part.)

"I just hate that because middle America looks at him like, 'He's so nice, he's like a father to them.' On [Project Runway] he was, sure ... At one point he said I was an embarrassment because I didn't show yet. And it's like, f**kin'-A, man ... I don't think [Gunn is] an authority on any designer's life. He went to school for sculpture or something. I don't think he's ever, to my knowledge, started a fashion line and therefore should not be the adviser or the f**kin' creative director." Oops ... too late. Liz Claiborne just made him their creative director. They hadn't gotten the memo from Jay yet, I guess.

For his part, Tim says that he's "regretfully" not in touch with McCarroll. "I'd like to be, but only if he's willing to talk." Damn it, gentlemen. I like you both. Please don't make us choose sides. Jay's got a new line debuting at Urban Outfitters next month. Tim's got the new Claiborne gig and Bravo show. There's no need for things to get ugly. If you need to hate on someone, hate on Kors.

I read on here that someone said they are "disappointed that jay hasnt shown a line yet" look up fashion week spring summer 07 (which happened in sept 06) he did, hense why hes having some pieces released for sale at urban. As for him bitching all the time come on people its TV, Entertainment, & Being in the public eye. Celebs do crazy shit all the time to get in press, and to get people talking. As for him rejecting the winnings $$$ if you truely think about it im sure you can figure it out... and on that note think about how hard it would be to start an entire line, studio, production, funds, sales, crew, & materials all on your own. Im sure it would take some time... to do it right anyway. :)

It does not matter what Tim Gunn looks like to the American public, and yes I do like Tim Gunn. For
me, it just seems like Season 1 winner Jay Mc Carroll has not been very grateful for what Project Runway has done for him. I hate to say anything to negative about this but, I feel that Jay has seemed a bit detached from producing anything in a timely manner. If you will recall there was a Bravo show about Jay after he won Project runway to see how he was doing with his line. During the Jay Show Heidi Klum wanted Jay to make a dress for her to wear at some event. Jay had to contact Kara Saun to get someone to help him sew the dress with him. At that time Jay took everything so personally and got upset that Seal wanted the dress different and there were changes requested in the end, that Jay could not keep up with. Heidi ended up with a Micheal Krors dress because she didnot think Jay was going to come through. Jay was not very nice about his dealing
with Heidi situation and not the talk about Tim Gunn, I wonder what happen to Jay after Project
Runway show because now he is very spiteful about
so many things. If I was Jay I be careful about what I say in public, no one going to want to work with
him in the future because his tongue to sharp. To bad Jay is not more Grateful for his success from the Runway Show. I feel Bad for the Project Runway
People to have someone go so two face on them.

Love Gunn, Heidi, not so much. Kors, I like him, but has anyone seen his collections lately? It's like they're just throwing crap on hanger with his label to see if it sells. There's nothing creative or even classic about what he's doing lately.

Is there anyway they can replace heidi w/ Diane Von F? She's so sexy, classic, and wonderful. Oh, wait, Klume is the exec. producer. I guess we're all stuck with her. She is tres annoying.

Give me Nina, Gunn, Vera Wang, and Diane V.F. any day. Just say no to Debra Messing (what the hell was that?) and Heidi, and that Pepper chick.

Please, Project Runway, be good to us again this year.

I say, Enough with all this nonsense. I just want to know when the new season of "Project Runway" begins again. It is a most enjoyable show and, I find myself anxious for each upcoming episode each week.

Kara Saun was absolutely better than Jay at everything except running her mouth. I think the donated shoes incident had more effect on the final decision than we were led to believe. She will go far anyway. Jay is too much of a whiner to really be "successful".

CC Tucker...I was taken aback on every level. Uli should have won hands down.

On topic: Jay is very talented, yet I don't believe he knows where to direct his talent, and that's frustrating coming from a design perspective. Jay has more growing to do, and that's why Kara should have won. She's more grounded in her designs. The shoes were gratis, not fair, maybe, but she still made it work within the boundaries of the competition. She had friends in high places, we all would have jumped at the opportunity. Finally, don't make her out to be a vixon, Kara, despite not winning, still had a good attitude with helping Jay turn out that wonderful dress not worn by Heidi.

Kara should have won, Jay should work out his designer woes, and Tim Gunn should keep dassling us with his expansive knowledge of the written word. Tim is great!
