Dirt: Come Together

by Jonathan Toomey, posted Feb 14th 2007 12:22PM

Alex Breckenridge stars as Willa McPherson in Dirt on FX. (S01E07) Well it's about time, but this was finally the first episode where I really started to get into Don's character and storyline.

Before I get into that though, I have to talk about the "Previously on Dirt" montage again. This is the second or third time that I've mentioned it and if you don't bother watching it, then you need to. It's freakin' hilarious. Don narrates it and this week he essentially insulted us viewers since he had to recap all this for those of us "with a worse attention span than he has." Moreover, he's not trying to offend us, but we "should really be up on this sh*t by now." The stuff is laugh out loud funny and really helps to separate the show from anything else on TV.

Alright, back to Don in the episode. I don't think I'm alone, but I actually felt bad for the guy this time around.

After he met that barista at the coffee shop in last week's episode, his demeanor seemed to change almost instantly. But this week, he was feeling so good about it that he actually wanted to verify his new admirer was real. With Lucy breathing down his neck and barista lady encouraging his artistic endeavors at the same time, it looks like Don may be reaching a crossroads of sorts. I wouldn't expect Lucy to let Don slip away so easily though.

Next up? Brent! We've known he was a total ass all season long, but it turns out he's a total creep too. First off, I was incredibly surprised that Willa fell for all his crap compliments and slept with him. I thought she was smarter than that. Too bad, because now her sexual romp with Brent has been enshrined in his personal video collection. The jerk records every encounter he has! I wonder what he uses the tapes for? Besides when he's alone. I hope the writers come up for something good with this one.

We got a lot of development from Willa's character this time around too. Earlier, I argued that she was starting to act like a younger Lucy. Now, I'm not so sure. Unlike Willa, Lucy is smarter and doesn't get emotionally attached to her interview subjects. Speaking of those, how messed up was that cheerleader Mattie? She had a few screws loose. My jaw dropped when she started referencing the Bible and said that, "Daddy calls me Sarah when he puts his love in me." Nothing is off limits with this show.

Julia finally entered rehab against her will. It's about time though. There are only so many times she can get high and have sex with Garbo before it gets repetitive. So it seems like that story is wrapped up for the time being. Gives Holt plenty of room to pursue whatever is going on between him and Lucy. But that sort of seemed to be the theme for this episode. Wrapping things up. The Jack/Leo story is gone, Holt got some pills for his worms (I'm never eating sushi again by the way), and it looks like Chuck Lafoon's story is over as well.

A lot of things were set up too. Mostly with Holt. Besides being the only man alive who can apparently please Lucy sexually, it looks like he may be developing a drug habit of his own. So perhaps that will be the arc for the rest of the season. The decline of Holt McLaren?

Who took the photos? Good hook. I think Garbo since she lurks behind the scenes but is very clear headed -- was that doe of drugs she gave Julia really a lethal dose?

Yes, Holt was taking a pill near the end, but it was from a prescription bottle, and they had the doctor who diagnosed his worms clearly give him a prescription. i don't think we're supposed to see him as getting hooked on drugs, at least not based on what we've seen so far. and there has to be more to this Garbo storyline -- she's hooked up with someone in some way that we haven't seen yet.

as near as I can tell, its ratings are pretty normal for an FX original series. the comparison cited in an earlier entry was for the wildly inflated first episode that got all the publicity. of course the ratings will go down in later episodes. The real key is whether the ratings have stayed consistent since then, whether they've risen at all, and how well it holds up to repeats. and given FX's scheduling strategy, the repeat factor is probably the most important for renewal. this is a good show that has potential. I hope they at least give it another set of episodes.

I'm so glad to have found others who love this show!!!! I am so incredibly hooked.

If there was a Lucy tape in skeev's collection, that would be an awesome development. But somehow, I don't think Lucy would fall for such a scumbag. He's all grimy and leery - Willa has really stepped in it now.

And Julia Mallory, come on! That dude in the threesome was DISGUSTING.

Can we get Paul Reubens as a regular cast member please? And someone please renew this show!!!!!

I love this show! I was blown away when we saw Don lurking in the shadows, taking pictures, at the rehab place where Holt delivering Julia. There is nothing Lucy won't do for a story. I am also so impressed with Courtney Cox's dramatic acting skills, she is fantastic. No Seinfeld residue there. And I swear she has gotten more beautiful. FX is turning out some great stuff. I can't wait for Rescue Me to come back. Anyone know when that will be?

I'm also really liking the show. Just had a look, though, and "Dirt" is doing very bad concerning ratings: "As for "Dirt," the FX drama saw a series-low 1.7 million viewers tune into its January 23 installment, less than half of its January 2 launch (3.7 million)." (thefutoncritic)

I hope the fact that only a few of us comment on this show this each week doesn't mean nobody's watching. Does anybody know the stats on that? I love this show and hope it gets another season!
