The first fifteen minutes of The Shield's new season

by Keith McDuffee, posted Feb 15th 2007 9:03AM
the shield lem casketJonathan mentioned a few weeks ago that Bud TV would be debuting a sort of "bridge episode" of The Shield. The 15-minute short is now available for viewing on the site, and after viewing it I'd say it plays a lot more like the first fifteen minutes of the new season premiere.

For those who are sad to see Lem gone from the series, this short video will only make you hate what Shane did with even more passion. Read on for a short rundown of what goes on in the video (image to the right is a little teaser for you).

If you've seen the very short teasers for the new season on FX, you've seen how this short video opens, with Vic and Shane looking over the freshly dug grave of their fallen fellow Strike Teamer. We quickly learn that because of Lem's shady dealings, there will be no motorcade nor will officers be allowed to take the day off to pay their respects. Yeah, I can hear your blood boiling, too.

As a news camera crew infiltrates the scene, Claudette explains the situation to Vic and Shane. We're treated to a flashback to two years ago, though it's a scene we haven't seen before. The Strike Team is in top form and they're even somewhat in Aceveda's good graces. We're painfully reminded of the Strike Team of the past, as the team gears Lem up for an arm wrestling match in the Barn.

Back in present day, Vic is incredibly anxious to avenge Lem by seeking out Guardo, while Shane carefully tries to make somewhat light of the situation. You can practically smell the guilt waft off Shane (or is that fear of what Vic will do to him when he finds out?)

The scene ends with the remaining Strike team splitting from the funeral to act on a tip of Guardo's location, where again Shane displays his apprehension ("I need to change my clothes.") -- It's almost a wonder why Vic can't see right through this behavior.

This little clip definitely gears me up for the new season (which starts April. 3) and makes me hope they do by us fans and make Shane get what's coming to him in spades. I think you'll agree that The Shield has been missed.

I'm a huge Shield fan! I found this on the Maxim Magazine website.

The Shield Mini-Episode
"Wins and Losses" bridges Season 5 and Season 6, which returns to FX April 3rd.

Since it's premiere, The Shield has blessed us with Emmy-nominated, ass-kicking corrupt police officers. To help bridge the gap between the last season and the new season, which begins on April 3rd, the creators filmed a 15 minute episode for Maxim. com. To find out the aftermath of Lem's death, check out "Wins and Losses."

I'm a huge fan of The Shield and as much as I'd like to see poetic justice served in Shane's case, I don't think it will happen this season being that FX has locked up the show for one more year after this one. It's probably for the better anyways because it will make this year even more tension-filled as Vic slowly finds out about Shane. I think this season will focus on Kavanaugh trying to get to the bottom of Lems death among other things, and after first suspecting the entire strike team as guilty I think he will narrow it down to Shane alone. I think he will present hard evidence to Vic of Shane's guilt and Vic will be forced to choose who to believe; His best friend (who will undoubtedly try to convince Vic it's an internal affairs trick to make them turn on each other) or Kavanaugh (who is very smart as Vic knows, and capable of attempting such a trick but also will have undeniable evidence of a guilty Shane). I think a good part of the season will focus on Vic's turmoil with this issue, and I think the season might end with Vic finding out for sure that Shane was responsible for Lem's death. But I don't think any action will be taken by Vic until next year. I'm sure Shane will bring up Vic's murder of Terry if Vic confronts him about Lem, but Vic will argue that Lem was family and part of the team and Terry's sole purpose was to destroy the team. Plus Claudette's bringing in a new strike team member with the hopes that he will eventually replace Mackey. It should shape up to be a great season.

I sincerely hope The Shield does not simply "make Shane get what's coming to him in spades"; it's always been a more complex show than that, and this kind of reasoning conveniently forgets Vic's own murderous past. When it does come out that Shane did it, there's no doubt in my mind that he'll be reminding Vic that he did the same thing with Terry to 'protect the team', which is what Shane, in his own warped way, thought he was doing by killing Lem. Was Vic's murder any less inhumane because we didn't KNOW Terry? It looks to me like they're all in for a fall.

By all accounts, it appears that this prequel is included on the "Special Features" disc of The Shield Season 5 DVD release on March 27 (one week before Season 6 starts). So Shield fans have yet another avenue to see this exclusive bridge episode.

I can't age verification process and I'm too lazy to go through any extra trouble. I guess I'll have to wait 4 weeks to see it on AOL or youtube.

Was trying to sign up via Firefox and noticed that the site is done in ASP, which I assumed would probably be happier with IE. Did that and I was able to pass the age verification without any problem, but had to be sure to put my "legal" first name down for the other portion of the verification (I go by my middle name).

Khamel, i'm 27 and the same thing happened to me. I care about seeing the clip, but not enough to bother to call them to get verified.
