Keith Olbermann gets four more years

by Anna Johns, posted Feb 16th 2007 1:21PM
keith olbermannNews anchor Keith Olbermann just signed on to four more years with MSNBC. His show, Countdown with Keith Olbermann, has seen a steady rise in ratings lately, most likely due to his contempt for the Bush administration and his "Special Comment" segments that are popular with like-minded folk. Olbermann's Bush smackdowns are particularly popular on YouTube. He's also pretty well known for his campaign against Bill O'Reilly, who shares the same time slot over at Fox NewsChannel. "Bill-O", as Olbermann calls him, is frequently on the list of "Worst Person in the World" for something he has said. Despite all the goofy business, there is some actual news value to his show. Olbermann often runs reporters' packages from NBC Nightly News and then analyzes (as cable news networks like to do) events with various experts.

If politics shift in this country after the 2008 presidential election, it will be interesting to see whether Olbermann can keep the wind in his sails.

All I can say is--WONDERFUL!!! Keith Olbermann has gotten better and better with his show on MSNBC! He's well deserving of 4 more years! Wished he could have gotten this same renewal during his and partner Dan Patrick's high peak on ESPN's Sportscenter in the '90s. They were killing the other sports cable networks' 11 pm shows. I like Olbermann's wiseguy approach, which nobody can duplicate or copy! Props to MSNBC for respecting his work and outspoken views.

TomB, I understand and you'll get no argument, just an explanation, which I thought was clear earlier. My point is some of these bloggers make it a point to write about politics whenever they get a chance. They go out of their way to do so and while I haven't counted, I can't remember a single one that was pro-conservative. O'Reilly and I only share one thing, and that's being conservative, beyond that I have no use for him; same for Olbermann. When articles are written about Olbermann, it's like the one above, discussing his latest show or his renewal, etc. while articles about O'Reilly are in the vein of "Why I Think Bill O'Reilly Is Nuts" (just do a search on tvsquad for "o'reilly" and you'll see). The slant is obvious and constant and this article is just another example.

I mean, c'mon, saying, "there is some actual news value to his show", but denying the same thing to the other side of that coin (O'Reilly, et al) *is* biased. Honestly, saying that about either is like saying there's some food value to Pop Rocks; maybe a little, but that's really stretching things and you'd have to be a real cheerleader for Pop Rocks to believe it and even more so to actually write it down.

This site, when dealing with political issues, is liberal and that's how and why I contend that this article is biased, TomB. I've been making a big deal out of it lately because Keith McDuffee has gone out of his way to try and make me believe TV Squad isn't left-leaning. When he first said that to me, I tended to believe him because I hadn't been on this site very long, but the longer I'm around the more obvious it has become that anything political will swing only one way.

That's not to say I want balance, I'd like to see an absence of most articles regarding politics, but Keith says that since politics in in TV it can't be helped. If that were really true, then why don't I see more articles about other subjects that are as prevalent on TV like cooking shows and travel shows? There have been some, but nothing near the political coverage and once again, that's where I have a beef.

Nick, I know you get sooo upset whenever something liberal shows up on this site, but with the third comment, don't act like you're an oppressed minority being ran out of the commenting area of this blog. No one has asked you to turn in your keyboard today. It's just a post man. You like this site with the exception of these posts; we get it, and they are not going to stop posting them. Take it for what it is and get over it already.

I'm fine with you putting a disclamer and any post you see fit. Something along the lines of: "The preceding was only related to televison in a minor point. It should me noted that the liberal establishment got it's greasy hands on this TV blog. I don't like it. That is all"

Politics are fun to dicuss on a political blog, On a TV blog it's annoying. Point it out, then move on.

A few things:

This blog covers TV. News is on TV. Thus, TVSquad covers the world of news on TV. They have every right to do so and I hope and expect them to continue.

As for Olbermann, I'm as liberal as can be and I can't stand him anymore. He's become much too shrill. His criticism of 24 was a "jump-the-shark" moment for me.

I'm much happier watching Real Time With Bill Maher when I get a chance. That show is immensely underrated.

erroneous_nick,

I respect you as a frequent commenter on this blog and enjoy reading your responses.

I just don't understand how this article is bias one way or another. It's about a show that is biased - but I don't see the bias in the blog entry.

I'm not trying to start an arguement with you. I just want to understand what you think is biased in this article.

bravo erroneous_nick

David, you've got your news channels mixed up. It's CNN which has been found to make up news stories (see Peter Arnett).

It's amazing the double standard going on here. Republicans who have their doubts about W are branded as "ditching him". It would be nice to see some reality from democrats criticizing the disastrous 8 years under clinton. Oh, yeah, that's right, they get booted out of their party like Joe Leiberman. Way to go party of tolerance!

So, add Anna Johns to Annie Wu and Bob Sassone as bloggers here who never pass up a chance to promote their kind of politics. Sure, they report on TV-related issues, but make sure they're about politics as often as possible. Their so-called TV blogging is just an excuse to get on their liberal soapboxes and shout.

You guys should be blogging somewhere that's focused primarily on politics instead of screwing up the enjoyment of TV, and the discussion of it, here. I originally came here to *share* enjoyment of television, not to be divided by your (or anyone else's) political views and I'd be grateful if you'd just save it for the voting booth. That is, unless you only want commenters here that agree with your views and I really don't think that's what TV Squad is about, although I'm beginning to have my doubts.

These sentiments of mine would apply to any conservative bloggers here as well, but as it's very, very plain to see, there's no such thing at this site and I wonder if that's by design.

If you don't like it then watch Fox News where they literally make up bullshit news.

And here's a hint, EVERYONE is making fun of Bush, he's a dumbass! His own party is ditching him because he's insane! In two years once he's out of office they will throw parties for several months, that's of course if he doesn't screw up the country even more than he has already.

Zero news value from ko.

Bad bet by NBC News which is just running with their anti-Bush broadcasting agenda (see Hardball, TODAY, Olbermann, MTP guests).

The president has only two years left. What will the rabid left wing do once he is gone? Shows like these will lose viewers. And be stuck with blowhards like Mathews and Olbermann doing their anti-right rants.
