Lost ratings news

by Erin Martell, posted Feb 16th 2007 8:10PM

Matthew Fox, LostIf the ratings are any indication, Lost's move to the 10pm time slot may have done more harm than good. For the last two weeks Lost's ratings have hit record lows, with 14.5 million viewers for its winter premiere and 12.8 million viewers for its most recent episode. The show may be out of danger from threats like American Idol and Criminal Minds, but has it left its early-to-bed viewers behind in the process?

Optimists have pointed out that Lost is doing relatively better in its new time slot, bringing ABC more viewers than the time slot's previous occupant, Invasion. The show is also #1 with the 18-49 age group when compared with its 10pm competition.

While this significant decrease in ratings is a major blow, there are many factors that could have contributed to the decline. 'Not in Portland' aired after a brutally long hiatus, and 'Flashes Before Your Eyes' aired on Valentine's Day, which is not a typically good night for television ratings. Fans can hope that the quality of recent episodes and the subsequent positive buzz will bring Lost back to its former glory.

I actually liked the season being broken up though perhaps next year they could break it up into THREE 'segments' with shorter breaks in between. Has anyone considered that? Maybe they could put some show similar to 'Dancing With the Stars' or 'American Idol' to fill in the gaps so as to not lose viewers? [Yes, they're 'unique' and probably hard to duplicate, but then, why not give it a try)?

What I don't like [and what I think is a major factor] is the 10 p.m. time slot. I TIVO it anyway, but I don't always watch it the same night like I used to because it's too late. A lot of people have to get up VERY early in the morning and staying up past 11 just isn't an option. If they don't tape it or TIVO the show, then ABC has lost a viewer. It probably happens a lot.

Also, much as I love Sawyer and Jack and Kate, I am MUCH happier now that the focus has gone back to ALL the original cast. I don't mind the show's relatively slow pace but I also don't like seeing so much of the OTHERS and not characters like Sayid, Locke, Charlie, etc. Thank goodness, that's changed!

It's everything. Too many problems have hurt the show - the time change, the hiatus, the storyline..... The 14.5 people who tuned in wanted to see what happened with Kate and Sawyer. No sooner do two leading characters finally "hook up" and the writers immediately alienate and separate them, sending Kate off with.... Sayid and Locke???? Nothing sexy about that. Would have been more interesting if Sawyer had made the self-sacrifice of accompanying her on the rescue mission to save his rival. Redemption.
The writers had better give us some interesting answers and soon, or they can say goodbye to their loyal fan base.

Lost is lost in its on plot.
nothing new, boring mysteries, more and more questions and uninteresting characters, which makes the audience care less about theanswers and events.

I guess the show has lost against heroes.

Maybe I'm in the minority but all the bitching about the 10:00 start is ridiculous! If you can't stay up until 11 - tape it, but stop the complaining!! From all the whining you'd think the show was canceled!!

I have to admit that the producers and ABC have done more to hurt themselves than almost any show I can remember. I am in the process of re-watching season 1 now and I'll get season 2 when I'm finished this. Lost is a very well done, well thought out show with superb production and acting. It's really as good as it gets. And thinking about where the show was at the beginning of season 2 and the end of season 2 you begin to realize just how much ground the show covered.

At the beginning of season 2 they had just blown the top off of the hatch. We hadn't met Desmond, we knew very little about the others, we knew nothing about the numbers, Dharma, The Hanso Foundation, the existence of the tailies, the story behind the plane that killed Boone. We got to meet Rose's husband and learned that she had recovered from cancer and that she believed the island was the reason. We met Penny and learned about her efforts to find Desmond. All of that - in one season!! And I'm sure there's more - those are just off the top of my head! And yet all people seem to remember is the lack of answers and the way ABC jerked everyone around last year with the one new episode followed by three weeks of repeats. As I said they really took what should have been a fantastic season that moved the story by leaps and bounds and turned it into a lesson in how to anger and lose fans!

I am enjoying the season but at times I have been pretty irritated by the lack of answers. I think if the show makes good on it's claims to answer everything "scientifically" it will go down as one of the best in history. If they don't, it'll be remembered as one of the biggest busts ever. it'll also set the tone for other shows that follow. If they deliver the audience will be more tolerant of this type of show again. If they fail the next show to try this format will have a very hard time getting people to believe and trust them. It's going to be an interesting two years!!

In case anyone missed that last question...ABC had Lost running at 61 MINUTES in the past. Now since the return, that extra minute is gone. Why?

I LOVE LOST. But the new 10 pm time slot is a huge mistake for its ratings! It doesn't affect me, because I either watch it live or DVR it for next day. But ABC is turning its "IT" series into an "also-ran" w/ this new time slot. I remember watching news shows(CNN, Fox, etc.) that would report about what happened on the previous nights ep. the next day. I'm not seeing that anymore, anywhere. LOST is NOT losing viewers because the audience is becoming "frustrated" w/ the plotlines(IMO); its losing viewers because Mickey Mouse is smoking crack and can't program his network worth a shit. Screw American Idol and Criminal(SNOOZ!!!)Minds. Have some balls ABC and keep this STILL brilliant series in a competitive time slot. 10 pm is all wrong for LOST. And to those who say Lost has "lost" its way, I disagree. Last weeks midseason return was a superb ep. And the last Desmond-centric ep. was great too. I think there are 14 more eps. til the season finale(nonstop). I can't wait to see what transpires over the next few months. It seems some viewers want answers ASAP...well, you been watching the wrong show for the past three seasons. LOST is a part mystery, but its also a study about human frailities and interactions amongst those humans. I have viewed scenes that have brought tears to my eyes simply because those scenes were so well written.

Yeah..I want answers too to the island mysteries. But I tune in for the character evolutions/interactions/flashbacks.

But seriously, though, ABC needs to move LOST back to either 8Pm or 9PM. And take a page from "24". Either begin the season in January w/ no repeats or in the fall w/ the same programming cues. PLEASE ABC...listen to your fans.

Oh..anyone else notice that Lost is now 10:00pm-11:00 PM. In past seasons, it was 9:00 pm-10:01 PM. I know its just a measley minute, but why the change?

Lost returned February 7th, in what would be the lowest rated episode since the series first premiered. The next episode on Feb 14th, was rated even lower than the prior week, bringing it to an all time low. Something is clearly wrong.

The new time slot, long hiatus, and poor story line this season have turned away viewers.

I really wish it would return to 9pm. I'm not watching American Idol. And I don't know anyone who watched Lost previously who is also an Idol fan. Isn't this the same network that put Grey's Anatomy against CSI? Why so cautious here?!

The long hiatus alone turned me off. I mean the show just returned from summer, aired a few episodes (lousy ones at that), then disappeared for another three months. ABC is lucky I came back at all.

I'm giving the "return" a few episodes. If the story goes nowhere, then I'll likely give up on the show.

The new water cooler show for me anyway is now Hereos. And hey, it doesn't air at 10pm!

Maybe I'm an ignorant rube but have they started factoring in DVR users into ratings calculations? There must be a lot of Lost viewers who Tivo the show and watch it later. (I know I didn't watch it till about 12:30am because I'd been out for V-day.)

Excuses are like a55holes blah blah blah. Lost lost hordes of fans because of the hubris of the producers and writers.
