Scrubs: My Perspective

Scrubs -- My Perspective(S06E09) Hiya! My name is Bob Kelso and I like whores. -- Bob Kelso

Thanks to my brother Joel for covering last week's episode of Scrubs while I was watching and performing some serious Improv. By the way, if Bassprov ever comes to your town buy tickets early and go see them. Mark Sutton and Joe Bill are just terrific!

Enough Improv chat, let's move ahead to this week's show. The most important item was, of course, the cameo appearance of former TV Squad writer (and current Netscape dude) Ryan Budke (check out the image at the end of this post, after the jump -- he's the guy you don't recognize, in light blue scrubs). It just goes to show you that we here at TV Squad are more than just writers. We're anonymous extras with our backs turned to the camera.

Plowing ahead now, and I wanted to bring up one important fact: poop is funny. It's even more amusing when you faint while you poop. On top of breaking up with his girlfriend (who actually didn't lose the baby, that hussy!), and living in a tent, J.D. has now come down with Vasovagal syncope, which is the common cause of fainting. And, get this, it's most common among young women. So, maybe Dr. Cox was right calling Dr. Dorian all of those girl names. This was perhaps the lowest and most pathetic that we've seen J.D. in a long time. It was lucky that he came to a realization that he was just being a big moper and the only person that could take care of him was himself.

The other major story in this week's show dealt with Turk. You know, now that I think about it, this was a pretty light week for the rest of the cast members when it came to storytelling. It was pretty much all J.D. and Turk in a show full of moping and sulking. Anyway, back to Chris. His issue was two-fold: he had to deal with a foreign exchange intern who thought his poopie didn't stink (see, there's the funny poop reference again) and also where to draw the line on how much truth he should reveal to a patient. His absolute thruthiness almost caused him lose a surgery, which was going to be performed on Brian, the Iraq War vet who was introduced during the 'His Story IV' episode. Turk got a second chance after Brian, who has short-term memory, forgot all of the things Chris mentioned about surgery deaths and his average education.

Beside those two stories there wasn't much more in terms of plot. Probably the weakest part of the show was Janitor's fake cruise just so he could torment J.D. with a wolf. Huh? The Todd was in quite a bit of this week's show (maybe as a precursor to his untimely death?), and actually worked out two nice high-fives . . . a Cyber Five and a Duct Tape Five. He also wore a shirt with the name of his website: TheToddTime.com. I spent a few minutes Googling for this site but didn't find any information. Now I'm curious because I'd like to see what The Todd would put on his site. Finally, it looks like parts of this episode were shot after Judy Reyes broke her hip. She was shown walking with a cane in many scenes.

I felt that, overall, this was a pretty funny episode. I really try not to compare the shows I review here to those in previous seasons, but this one had the feeling of those older shows, particularly in the pacing. I liked the fact that we only had to focus on two stories this time around. There have been plenty of episodes this season where we've had to deal with three or four plots at one time that made the show feel a bit too jumbled. That's all for now. T.T.F.N.

I was wondering why she had a cane...

Has anyone else noticed a couple subtle allusions to JD and Elliot getting back together for their yearly coitus? Last week JD was talking about how if Elliot had been sold in Mexico there "wouldn't be this awful sexual tension between us and [Keith] and I would be best friends" and this week, when the beer was dumped on Elliot, she remarked "my boobs do look good wet" and JD seemed to agree. Maybe it's just wishful thinking since me and my friends love the show most when JD and Elliot are together.

The Todd Time site is real, it just got totally swamped last night and was nigh inaccessible. This morning it loads but very slowly, so I haven't had the patience to play with it. There appears to be video of some sort, the rest I can't really ascertain without waiting for it to load.

Rich, I was at the same improv festival thing as you. I performed right before Bassprov at the Cat's Cradle, with the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater.

Anyway, I read the blog a lot and was surprised to hear you mention the festival many times.

Well... that's it.

Seeya,

Don't forget that ABC actually owns Scrubs (no kidding).

Thetoddtime.com does work, but it's really getting hammered right now. All I can get is a blue background screen, a Quicktime movie that isn't loading, and a picture that isn't loading that links to www.nbc.com/scrubs

The title of the page is "YEEEA!!! It's THE TODD Time."

I'm going to try to load it again in the morning.

While I was watching this I also felt a little nostalgic, the episode was a little more like the Scrubs we know and love. I'm hoping that this is the first step of Scrubs getting its "groove" back.
