Idol has become a significant betting event

Chris SlighThe Top 24 semi-finalists have been announced which means it's time for the public to vote for their 2007 American Idol. It also means that many people will be "betting on" their American Idol, as well.

Payton O'Brien of Gambling911.com claims that the talent contest has become "one of the most significant betting events of the year." Last year, according to O'Brien, millions of dollars were bet on Idol, "across the globe, not just in America."

Several gambling websites are now analyzing the top contestants in order to determine the betting odds. It's sort of amusing to imagine sports bookies trying to figure out the odds of Sanjaya Malakar becoming the next American Idol. But I'm willing to bet those guys are a lot more serious than I am in over-analyzing these contestants and this competition.

By the way, according to the odds-makers, curly-haired Chris Sligh is an early favorite.

With the exception of Taylor Hicks and Katherine McPhee, I've always found that the people I like in the beginning end up being my least favorites in the end. Last year, I really like Paris Bennett in the beginning, but somewhere around the top 10 I wanted her gone.

Here's my problem: I can't figure out how to set up a (completely legal) pool. Do people just pick the winner? Boring week-to-week, plus 80% of people could win if it turns out to be Chris Sligh. Do you pick who gets voted off each week? If you do that, do you have to wait until it's down to the final 12, since otherwise 4 people are getting voted off every week? Any advice would be appreciated. Again, totally legal, just for pride, not for cash or other remuneration.
