Veronica Mars: Mars, Bars

(S03E14) I know a lot of readers get really ticked off when we reveal any sort of spoilers before the jump of the post, so I'll just start off with a big "WOW!" If you saw the episode, you certainly know what I'm talking about. I'm both saddened and thrilled at the end result of things ... but I'll talk more about that later.

I think what makes me more sad is the fact that, after next week, we have to wait until April for a new episode. Boo.

Lamb is dead. Did I say "wow" yet? That was one I totally did not see coming, though it's possible some spoiler site mentioned something about it today and I missed it -- I didn't go for my usual fix today. But then to top things off, Keith is made Sheriff! The repercussions of Lamb being so abruptly killed off leave room for a lot of possibilities.

Still, I'm sad to see Lamb go. Who will Keith and Veronica duel with now? There's always Vinnie, who seems to be making more appearances lately. I really do hope they make more use of him in the coming episodes, and now it makes more sense than ever before.

OK, enough about the Lamb thing. The writers are actually doing a good job of finally making us really not like Landry, which is paving the way for what's coming later in the case. Why would he be so easily "pissed off" at Keith for following up on what's clearly a suspicious set of circumstances? He just comes across as a real ass.

There was a nice shout out to season one with Lamb and Wallace, and I'm feeling really stupid right now for not getting the reference Wallace made about Dorothy. If I had my season one DVDs here (a friend is borrowing them) I would check back, but maybe one of you can enlighten us?

Finally the whole LoVe situation has moved along quickly though this episode, and Logan's clearly moving on to Parker. The scavenger hunt showed how good the two are together, so it's a no brainer that they'll wind up together. On that same note, it's great to see Mac again, even if it was for a short time ... with love interest, even!

Anyone else catch Logan's "splitting a bamboo" mention during the Kama Sutra scene?

I loved this episode. Lamb will be certainly missed. I just can't believe that they would let him go out at the hands of Booker. Bonus points for that one! The VD scavenger hunt was fun. It was also good to see Logan and Veronica getting along. I can't wait for next week's arc conclusion.

Jose -- While I wouldn't go condoning insurance fraud, let's just remember here that a guy was in for a long bout of a debilitating and deadly illness that, once he died, would mean NOTHING for his family. So he took the ultimate sacrifice and died for them. Still, it's all fiction.

Okay, I reacted to the Dorothy thing differently. I never even though of it as gay-bashing. I was going past Dorothy's friends. So I thought of it as meaning Lamb didn't have a heart, a brain, or courage. But that's just me.

Yes, it was the most touching episode of insurance fraud you'll watch this year. I immediately thought Arrested Development when I heard "friend of Dorothy's", but I guess it is a long standing phrase.

Seriously what's with the condoning of insurance fraud like it is perfectly acceptable. That kind of thing only raises costs for everyone. This goes along with the tacit condoning of ecoterrorism in the stolen monkey episode.

I was a huge fan of Lamb. He didn't take crap from anyone.

One of the best episodes of the season, although once it was learned he had a terminal illness, suicide seemed like the obvious answer.

All the funny moments aside - it was great to see our favorites friends of Veronica back - Wallace, Mac, Weevil, and Cliff!

No, No, No, No;

You guys are getting Wallace's comment to the sheriff all wrong! In the very first episode, Wallace was working at a gas station and some PCHer's come into the gas station and try and steal some beer (i think), anyway, wallace calles Neptune's finest and Sheriff Lamb shows up and when Wallance is threated by the PCHer's, he changes his story that nothing is really happening, and Lamb tells him to go to the Wizard and get some courage.

If I'm not mistaken "I smell bread" is a reference to a 1981 M*A*S*H episode, in which Major Winchester after a unnerving near death experience goes to a front line aid station to find out what an individual experiences at the moment of death. He questions a soldier who's beyond saving. "Do you see anything?" he pleads. "Can you feel anything?" The dying soldier replies simply, "I smell bread." It's a powerful episode. I have no doubt Rob Thomas had it in mind.

The "I smell bread" comment was referring to the fact that Lamb was having a stroke. People say that when someone is having a stroke, they smell toast.

Re: "I smell bread." That's a quote from an old episode of M*A*S*H. A wounded soldier says it just before he dies.
