Michael Rosenbaum leaving Smallville after next season, report says

by Joel Keller, posted Feb 21st 2007 11:31AM
Michael RosenbaumAccording to the site Associated Content, Michael Rosenbaum, who plays Lex Luthor on Smallville, is planning on leaving the show at the end of next season.

There aren't many more details, other than the fact that Rosenbaum "confirmed" the report. The rest of the article just summarizes the development of Lex and speculates on whether the show can survive his departure. Considering the show is already in its sixth season, and Rosenbaum isn't going to leave until next year, it would seem that there wouldn't be much life left in the show beyond a seventh season, anyway. So this announcement, especially coming so early, is a curious one to me. Maybe Rosenbaum is looking for some sort of "farewell tou" or something. Not sure.

Can the show survive without Lex? Let me know in the comments.

Smallville is a soap opera.....but very good.....they really have not stuck to the storyline at all.....Clark should be flying by now....the Lana relationship is really been blown out of control.....Lana is to wishy washy.....If Rosenbaum leaves the show it will not last long.....because that is superman's arch enemy if you go by the past superman series.....Lex is a big character in Smallville.....I think more than Clark at this point in time.....I think they should kill of Lional Luther.....he is so evil!!! I just liked it better when Lex and Clark were friends.....heck they sure are not going by the old superman/comics anyway, so why not let them have there friendship and end it in good terms instead of bad????

I love Michael and without him I don't know if I would be as dedicated to the show and watch it every week.
Lex is the reason for all of Clark's struggle and without him there would be no conflict. The show cannot go on without Lex and I dont think that the producers will try to go on either. Losing Lex would be like losing Lois or even Clark for that matter, it just can't happen. I think they should just end the show next season and have the story fall into place where Clark becomes Superman.

and one more thing, I agree with Alien, if Michael leaves I really won't have an interest in the show anymore either. It's a good show but you can't keep watching it knowing what you're missing.
Michael, do something else soon so that everybody isn't starved to see you for long!

I just don't think that there will be much of a show without Lex. He created a friend dynamic then an enemy one and then we got to see him as a boy friend and husband to Lana. He has played too much of a BIG role to just go and have the show continue. But if I had to think of a plot that could happen, I think it should be that they get back to where they began. They have gotten so dark recently which is a given when you are groing out of your childhood and entering the so called "real world" but there should be a regaining of innocents. It would be like saying "all this has happened to us but we are still the same people". Clark is still the honest Farm boy (with the exception of his secret), Lana's the same nice girl next door that ISN'T evil, chloe is still a friend and curious as ever and Lois is sarcastic and blunt but in an acceptible kind of way. And I think it should also show Clark finding himself as not only Clark kent the reporter but Superman the hero. It shouldn't end as diabolic as it is now. It should have some kind of brighter ending that foreshadows and not so hellish future, one without your old friend marrying your first love and your boyfriend making or faking your pregnancy so that you'll marry him etc. let's get back to Clark becoming Superman and NOT being emotionally tortured at EVERY turn.

The trick of it all is that it was established long ago that the show won't go beyond a seventh season. The writers have said it, the producers have said it and Tom Welling has said it. So, it's true, Michael Rosenbaum WILL be leaving after the seventh season... along with everybody else.

i've heard that on one of the interviews of some of the casts (i think it was on the CW) that smallville will only have a 7th season. i think its because most of the cast members contracts were only for 7years. and most of them are ready to move on :'(. which is sad. but Kristen Kreuk & Alison Mack only have 7year comtracts. some of the other one might as well.

All good things must come to an end. Warner's made enough money, and if they blew it, too bad. Let this be the last season. Let the very last scene in the series finale be Welling in the tights, cape, etc. and flying. You can't be SuperBOY forever!
