Grey's Anatomy: Some Kind of Miracle

So, I'm watching this climactic ferry-accident-arc episode, and there's a lot of stuff going on. Meredith is still cold and dead. She's also dealing with patients from her past in some sort of afterlife, all of whom are encouraging to fight for life. Izzie and her passive-aggressiveness is called on the carpet yet again by Callie. They start a bypass on Meredith to warm her up, since according to Webber, she's not dead until she's warm and dead. She's still in limbo. Derek is yelling at, then trying to save Ellis. At one of the commercial breaks, I thought to myself, "Whew. Glad this is almost over."

Then I looked at the clock on my microwave, and it said it was 9:38.

This was not a good thing.

I'm just going to say this right now: This did not need to be a three-episode arc. Not at all. Two episodes would have been more than enough to show this major transition in the lives of Meredith and the rest of the crew at SGH. Making this arc two episodes would have saved viewers from what a lot of them thought was a drawn-out disaster scene in the first episode (though I actually liked that one), and the drawn-out mess that was this third episode.

But, of course, Shonda wanted to get the discussion going, didn't she? I mean, the buzz this past week was strong:
They wouldn't kill off Meredith, would they?
Did she purposely go under?
Why did Izzie say that to George at that time?

The answers to these questions were all provided:

Of course not.
Yes.
Because Izzie really needs to be less of a self-absorbed runt (fans of 30 Rock will know what I mean).

The "limbo" sequences, with Dylan, Denny, Ellis' dead scrub nurse, and Skewer Girl were boooooorrrrrrinnnng. I mean, they were endless. Why? Well, because we knew how they were going to turn out. The patients of Meredith's past (and Doc the dog) were there to try to make her realize that a) she stopped fighting in that bay, and b) she needs to go back and fight and live the life she deserves to live. Now, the alpha-male banter between Dylan and Denny was pretty funny. But it was all too brief. The rest.... ugh. I just don't even want to go into it any more, because writing about it is going to put me to sleep.

Well, let me say one more thing about it: if this is what it takes to make Meredith into a less whiny, mopey character, if this cuts back on some of the "dark and twisty," I think fans of the show will have thought that the limbo episode was worth sitting through. At least that's my hope. "I had intimacy issues, which seems so stupid now," she says to her guardian "angels." Now that she realizes she has things to fight for, and that she no longer has to fight for Ellis' approval, things might start looking up in her life. I mean, I'd much rather see Ellen Popmeo's smile than her frown, wouldn't you?

Oh, and Ellis... her death seemed inevitable. It was good that Derek was actually able to get things off his chest to her, then distract himself by trying to save her. But, it was no big surprise when Meredith saw her mother wandering around in her limbo world. And, whether Ellis' spirit actually told Mer that she was anything but ordinary or if it was just all in Mer's head, it doesn't matter; Mer has been set free. That was a very gratifying scene to me. So was the scene where Webber talks to Ellis' body, even though it was a bit creepy that she would still be lying in her room hours after she died.

The best part of the episode was how everyone else reacted to Meredith's situation. It was all authentic, all of it. Derek is so distraught he sits with the other victims' families for a while. Makes sense, since that was what he was at the time. Webber, Burke, and Bailey keep trying and trying, because this was more than just another patient on the table. George tells Izzie that he needs her, for getting through this and for getting through his sudden marriage. Addison realizes that what Derek and Mer have was nothing like what she and Derek had, prompting her to tell Mark that if he's serious about being serious, he needs to refrain from sex for 60 days. More on that later.

But if any Emmy nominations come out of this episode, there has got to be one for Sandra Oh. Seeing tough, unfeeling Cristina dealing with the prospect of losing "her person" was fascinating. She runs away and buys out the 99-cent store. Then she gets drunk. Thankfully Burke got her to come back. And the look on her face as she stood at Meredith's feet, mentally urging her to fight was a remarkable piece of acting, as were the tears she shed when Mer finally woke up and tried to say something.

Alex is starting to bond with pregnant Jane Doe, isn't he? Wonder where that's going to go. Also, it seemed weird to see Addie and Mark having that sex discussion after all this intensity and trauma. But it was funny when Mark said that Addie should also refrain, to which she said, "who am I going to have sex with?" Cut to Alex. It was almost like a Lenny and Squiggy moment right there. I wonder if we're starting to see the setup for the Addison spinoff episode we're going to see in May.

So what we have here is half of a good episode, stretched out into something that was hard to sit through. Was it worth it? Maybe, if the Izzie-Denny cosmic shoulder brush in the final scene gave you the same chills that I got. But I'm not really sure all of this hullabaloo was really necessary. If this is a true turning point for the series and its characters, it'll be considered a landmark episode. If the characters go back to their annoying selves, it'll just be yet another "title character goes to limbo" snoozer. I hope it becomes the former.

Are the characters on 'Grey's Anatomy' based on the 'Wizard of Oz'?
Meredith/Dorothy is desperately searching for 'home'. Dr. McDreamy (a brain surgeon) is the Scarecrow and the closest to Dorothy. Burke (the cardiologist) as the Tinman, is stiff and in constant need of 'oil' to loosen his joints, or relieve his arm from tremors. And George is the Cowardly Lion, afraid of his shadow, Izzy, the Chief and Callie. The Chief is Oz. Izzy is a perfect 'Glenda' - sweet and beautiful. The title of the 'Wicked Witch of the West' could be Meredith's (now dead) mother? Even the bar is called 'Emerald City'. So what's the deal? Is this a reworking of the Wizard of Oz or just uncanny similarity?

Holy crap lads (sorry - us Irish call both gals and blokes 'lads') - I think you are taking this all far too seriously. Its just a show. Now in saying that I haven't been this unhealthily obsessed with a show since the hype surrounding the early days of Friends but this is just that type of show. It's OTT in some places but just run with it. It's a cross between Ally Mcbeal (much better acting/script of course!) and alot of other medical drama's over the years but with one crucial difference...Patrick (if any man ever looked at me with such intensity I would collapse) Dempsey - (God I wish he was Irish..come visit Ireland sometime Pat - the Cork Jazz Festival 2007 is the only thing worth seeing in this country..I'm not a bunny boiler/Jazz Cork Festival promoter.. I swear.) God I hope he doesn't turn into a " I want more money cause I'm sooo this show or I'm leaving" person. With all this attention he's getting it would be crap if he turns into a nob-end like the rest of these ' had fame in the 80's - forgotten about until now - Kiefer Sutherland types...mind you that's a bad example - I think Kiefer Sutherland has dealt with all this ' 24 ' fame remarkably well - must be down to having a solid Dad like Donny. But seriously! - Forget this girly male fantasy crap about Paddy - the rest of the cast are amazing and I would love to think they all get on reasonably well after the recent cast slagging matches.

Actually on that note - it was a bit hard to try and get back into watching the show after all that real life cast arguments with your man Burke but I think that's drifting into the forgotten now. His character playing against Christina's is important and leaves room for alot of exploration. By the by , lay off Meredith's character. She is central to the whole thing. Go watch 24 or Lost if your gonna be so critical ( trust me - those shows will be sooooo last year soon enough). Just make the most of Greys while its fresh and fun and the cast are still all relatively unknown...because soon , the nostalgia of the show itself and what it meant to you at the time in your life that you got absorbed in it, will disappear. Revel in the escapism people...because soon one of the cast will be getting married or divorced from Mr.Pitt and Grey's Anatomy will be on that list of "soooooo last year"...Zzzzzzzzzz..Jesus I cant believe I'm writing on one of these websites. I need to change jobs...strike that , reverse it - I need to GET A LIFE!

I think it is a sad commentary on a show that after the second episode in this three episode arc, I realized I enjoyed it much more because it had much less Meredith. She's become an empty, dark, twisty shell of what she was when the show first started. I call it the Ally McBeal syndrome. Too neurotic, whiny, vapid, poor is me to be anything remotely resembling likeable.

Sandra Oh was brilliant in all three episodes. Izzie and Callie's fighting...sigh. I must admit I'm on Callie's side here. Izzie is just being an asshat about the whole thing. And I know I can't be the only one to be happy that Mer's mom is gone.

I cannot resist pointing out to the disgruntled fans that this episode was just about what I expected, given that it was co-written by "Suicide Girl" herself, Marti Noxon. Yes, boys and girls, the Noxious one is back, and yes, there are still a lot of "Buffy" fans who blame her for what happened to that show in the last two seasons. *sigh*

Oh well, there were nice moments for Christina, Alex, Addison and Denny (and some good acting there!) but I swear I kept wondering why someone hadn't cold-cocked Izzie!

I would like to see any of you come even close to writing the shows that Shondra writes. I would challenge you do come up with a better script.
Not every show is going to be the BEST episode you have ever seen. Give the writing staff a break. I think they do a good job in the sense that when they seem to get over dramatic, they quickly bring it back to the basics. They bring it back to the core of why we love this show soooo much. They bring in the humor or a scene that blows you away and has you reaching for the tissues. I really enjoy this show and look forward to Thurs.

Sarah: www.iheartgreysanatomy.com is available, perhaps you should buy it and start writing...

I don't mind TVS when they're critical of shows I like, especially when it comes to shows that I'm well aware are being criticized elsewhere. As a general comment, and not singling out anyone in particular, but it only bugs me when the "reviewcappers" (as one of the staffers wrote in a comment a while back) are being critical but then miss key points or events in an episode. In this particular case, I think it's pretty evident by the comments that Joel is voicing similar criticism to a lot of us.

It's clear to me that he, like a lot of us, really enjoys the show as a whole, but finds it lacking lately. We're fortunate to live in an age where creators *do* seem to listen to feedback (on occasion, anyway), and so criticism like this can only hope to serve to improve the show that we all like. If all that was out there was gushing praise to pander to the segment of viewers who have the love blinders on.

Anyway, sorry to rant, and don't really mean to pick on anyone (sorry if it sounds that way)... Just saying that criticism can be a good thing, and healthy disagreement in the comments is what it's all about.

Its official, Grey's Anatomy has "jumped the shark".

The February 22, 2007 episode, with the whole Meredith living or dying with ghosts and afterlife definitely caused Grey's Anatomy to jump the shark. The show was laughable with me making jumping motions with my hands while watching it. Its over for me, as I don't think I can watch it anymore!
