Lost Easter egg hunt: Stranger in a Strange Land

by Erin Martell, posted Feb 23rd 2007 4:22PM

Matthew Fox as Jack"Stranger in a Strange Land" cannot compete with "Flashes Before Your Eyes" in the Easter egg department, but there were a few useful clues. This episode moved away from the time theme and focused more on symbols. So far, fans have found the following eggs:

Marks: The overhyped revelation concerning Jack's tattoos shed some light on his possible future with the Others. Achara told Jack that he was a leader and a great man, then tattooed him with the phrase, "He walks amongst us, but he is not one of us." Fans that are familiar with the Chinese characters on Matthew Fox's arm have made it known that the characters represent the words "eagle," "strike," "long," and "sky" (or "void"). These words are connected to a poem by Chairman Mao Tse-tung, which contains the phrase "eagles high, cleaving sky" and discusses fate. Is Jack destined to lead the Others someday?

Brands: Juliet escaped one form of old-school punishment (execution), only to be branded like an animal by her own people. Two different meanings are currently being debated online. The first is the symbol's similarity to the cross of The Church of Scientology. The second is the history behind the inverted cross, which is said to represent unworthiness and respect for authority.

DHARMA drama: The room in which Juliet's sentencing was being held contained a lectern with the DHARMA Hydra symbol on it. Some viewers are claiming that you can see the back of Cindy's head in that scene (perhaps she came to watch the court proceedings?).

Kite-flying: Authenticity points for whoever picked out Jack's kite in "Stranger in a Strange Land." It is a famous Thai creation called "Starbird," and was inspired by Van Gogh's "Starry Night." Does anyone else think the kite is shaped like the strange bird seen on the island in past episodes?

Boating: Despite some discussion, it does not appear that the Others' boat was the same one that Michael and Walt took at the end of Season Two.

Keep an eye out for numbers-related Easter eggs next week, which is a Hurley flashback episode. Happy hunting!

Anyone remember Ben saying "I want that boat"?

That was Desmond's boat.

Frank ... I don't understand your confusion. That is the other's boat ... they used the row boat to get to it because it was anchored off-shore. It's just a large motorboat.

Um ... Remember Michael and Walt? ... they left on the Boat used to orignally kidnap Walt. This is definitely a different boat.

Um, yes Cindy was there to watch. They all were. Remember the scene where Cindy and the other "tailies" are milling around Jack's cage? She outright tells him that they're there to watch. When Jacks ask what they're there to watch, she never answers, because the little girl comes over to her.

They've already been brainwashed.

Frank Mills, I assumed that was the boat we saw them on at the very end, they used the row boat to transfer Ben onto it.

click on that, and tell me it isnt a boat. Does it belong to the Others? Did the editors just forget to take it out? Is it important? Are the Others an entertainment crew for Royal Carribean or some other cruise line? ha, I kinda flipped when I saw this Wed. night. I'm interested to see what you all have to say about it or if you know if anyone else brought this up anywhere.

Someone else speak up if they've got another theory, but I've always figured the writers wrote Jack's 5 seconds of fear to refer to Matt Fox's "5" tattoo.

I think this flashback occurs before his first surgery (and all the other Jack flashbacks), thus he hasn't had this part of the tattoo done yet, even by the end of the episode.

The boat the Others were traveling on was much bigger than the one that Michael and Walt took. However, it did seem to resemble the boat the Others used when kidnapping Walt and very well could be the same one. I wouldn't put it past them to have more than one boat, but who knows.
