Viewers say no to The Black Donnellys

by Bob Sassone, posted Feb 27th 2007 3:01PM

The Black DonnellysIf the overnight ratings are any indication, NBC now has another drama they're not going to know what to do with.

The premiere of The Black Donnellys, taking over the Monday at 10pm slot from Studio 60, started off well, with 10 million viewers, but then it seems a lot of viewers didn't like what they saw and the number of viewers in the second half hour dropped to 6 million (though I think the rating was better than what Studio 60 has been getting).

It still amazes me that over 6 million viewers is considered a "failure," but I guess that's why I'm not a network exec.

It's not good when the premiere episode of a show starts losing viewers so quickly halfway through. I wonder what's up with Monday at 10pm. Is it the time slot? Are people worn out after Heroes? Is CSI: Miami that strong?

I think this show would make it if it were on HBO. It is a high enough quality to make it there, and it would get more time to grow. Plus watching it without commercials makes it easier to follow and more fun to watch. Honestly, if I could continue watching it online for the next few years, I'd be happy.

Hate hate hate hate HATE the show! Maybe it's because I love Studio 60 but does anyone buy into this Wal-mart verison of the Sopranos meets Romeo & Juliet? What crap.

It wasn't the timeslot for this show, because it tanked even worse in ER's spot. This bomb could single-handedly kill NBC.

I really liked it and I watch Heroes. I thought it was interesting and at least it wasn't a crime procedural. I guess I don't watch enough tv to know whether this genre is done or not. Aren't all the shows Medium, cold case, numb3rs, CSI LAw and Order all some kind of crime solving show.

I liked the brothers and it may be interesting to see crime from the other side for a change. I also though it had the right mixture of humor and drama.

I didnt like Studio 60. I only watched it once and couldn't care less about the characters and their problmes. I found it very boring.

I did watch it (DVR'd it) and liked it, At least I liked it compaired to CSI: Miami. My fience and I are downright sick of Miami that I have finally deleted the season pass of it and put tBD in it's place. So here are my hopes that something will oust Miami for good, and I really like CSI and CSI: NY, fwiw.

10. Sure it dropped to 6 million halfway through, but how many of those people happened to just fall asleep with their TV on?

WELL I think that says alot right there. I didnt like it. Started to watch it because i was too lazy to switch the TV, and then i actually left my room for the next hour with it still on that channel and joined my roommate to watch a rerun of family guy....I am all for good dramas. USA is my favourite when it comes to pulling off good shows, HBO follows close behind. On regular TV: Medium, Heroes, all CSIs (when i remember), family guy, Lost, Law & Order SVU and CI (loyal fan) and Ugly Betty are the shows i actually make an effort to sit down and watch. I did like Day Break and still watch it online because I gave it a chance and realised it wasnt bad, but other than that. I can go back to not having any TV in my house....OH how could i forget HOUSE! Love that show!

Having watched the preview DVD from Netflix and the broadcast version, the commercial breaks really did hurt the show. Watching the DVD, you kept watching as the story snowballed, thinking, how are they fitting all this story into one hour show? With the commercial breaks, there wasn't that flow, and it was actually more difficult to remember the connections between the earlier sections and the later parts of the story.

but I still liked it and will be back for the next few episodes. Then again, I was one of the few who kept watching Kidnapped, too.

I didn't want to watch it. I was watching Heroes and just left the tv on (which, I'm sure was their plan).
I saw the preview and said "no way"...but then I got sucked in.
I know I'm in the minority here but I really liked it, I hope they don't cancel it, I want to see things play out.

And again, I'm sure I'm in the minority here as well, but I think studio 60 sucked and I'm glad it's gone.
Now could someone please stop giving Ellen jobs?

I really enjoyed the show. I quit watching CSI Miami because it basically sux period. Cannot stand that show. Horrible writing and the acting is sub par at best. I tried Studio 60 twice and twice it bored me to tears. I couldn't connect with the storylines, the characters...the show...I like The Black Donnellys so far much better than Studio 60.

Ha! I was gonna say I skipped the show cause I was put off by too many promos but it seems the 2nd post here beat me to it. Hey, wait, I DID say I skipped the show cause I put off by too may promos, how about that. I don't know what the heck is wrong with the networks today but ALL OF THEM show way too many promos. There's just about more promos playing than legit advertising. I don't want to watch an hour show and see the same promo a hundred times. Why not just sell a show to one vendor and let them sponsor the dang thing and only show their ads the whole hour. Hey, now there's an idea. Lets go back to television of the 50's and have Colgate sponsor an hour show with only three one minute breaks. I would watch just about any show that only had three commercial breaks. Think about it, an hour show today is only 40 minutes or less of actual program. In 1985, an hour show averaged close to 45-47 minutes. What up?
