Will Leno step aside in '09 for Conan?

by Julia Ward, posted Mar 2nd 2007 6:11PM
Leno headshotIn today's New York Post Cindy Adams gets the story behind the story of Leno's quiet abdication of his late night throne to Conan. While it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, Leno had no intention of retiring in 2009. The decision to hand the 11:30 reigns over to Conan was made by network executives who were interested in capturing a younger demographic. NBC could hold on to Leno, but would owe Conan a major default fee.

Adams reports that ABC and Fox are both interested in scooping Leno up if NBC really does kick him to the curb in two years, which it probably will considering this move has been public for nearly three years now. Carson Daly and Jimmy Fallon have already thrown their hats into the ring for Conan's old slot. Things could get even wilder in late night if Letterman announces his retirement. (...a big "if"...) Carson retired when he was 67. Dave turns 60 in April so he's got a few more years in him, but sooner rather than later, this playing field is going to be wide open.

I love Jay Leno and i don't get how the number one late night show gets treated like this. Conan is too esoteric for most mainstream viewers and Leno is too young to retire. NBC should reconsider it's decision and if not Leno should go to ABC but my fear is that he wouldn't want a repeat of the letterman/carson debacle that we the viewers will be the ones at the loss. Leno should not leave late night. All you naysayers are in the minority -- because he has been clearly the number 1 late night leader for several years now.

Before he took over The Tonight Show, I never missed it. That was the last thing I watched nearly every night of the week because Johnny Carson was just so good at his job. I grew up watching Johnny so maybe that's one reason why I think Leno does such a poor job on that show.

Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike Leno. When he was a guest on The Tonight Show or doing stand-up on other television programs I always liked what I heard. He seemed like a nice guy and had pretty decent material, but for me he just ruined The Tonight Show.

I don't have any suggestions as to who I think would be the perfect host to replace him, but I'd like to see someone else in the chair. Well, I guess I've thought Tim Allen would do a good job, but before Leno took over I figured he'd do fine, too, so what the heck do I know? Besides, I'm sure Allen's too old for consideration.

Conan is awful. How he got hired in the first place is a mystery to me.

Here's my opinion (FWIW)

1. Letterman

2. Conan

3. Ferguson

4. Kimmel

5. Leno

6. Daly (a very distant 6th)

Leno beats Letterman in the overall ratings, but Letterman has a much better demographic. Letterman also has booking challenges because he's in NYC and most of the primo guests live and work in LA.

Leno should never have gotten Carson's spot. It definitely should have gone to Letterman. Carson wanted it to go to Letterman. All of the comedy spots that Leno does comes from Letterman's show. Not the actual spots, but the fact that they were added to the show in the first place.

I think Conan should definitely replace Leno. If Carson Daly gets Conan's spot it would be a disaster. Daly just sucks, all the way around - from monologue to interviewing skills.

Leno just seems to be phoning it in. His monologue and his interviewing skills are awful.

Where have all the Conan fans gone. I find him MUCH funnier than the other late night hosts. He was great with the bread expert http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-k0oJ01uiUM&mode=user&search=

There is the link for the interview.

If history is any indication, shouldn't Conan have left his own show by now to start guest hosting the Tonight Show? No, I believe Conan will not be taking over as host when Jay leaves. Their demos are wildly different. Plus, will he really move to LA? Max surely won't. Here is my prediction:

"In the year 2000...

Talk show host, Conan O'Brien, ditches NBC for CBS to take over for a retiring David Letterman when it is announced that the hosting duties of the much-coveted Tonight Show are given to...John Stewert."

I'm going to go against the grain here and say, ROSIE O'DONNELL should be considered to take over Jay Leno's post, not Conan O'Brien. It would be nice to see a female personality hosting a late night show for a change.

I hope Leno goes to another network if he retires, or he decides to continue. I like how Leno tends to keep his show cleaner than Conan. I think Leno can appeal to kids and adults...whereas Conan appeals to the 18-25 age range. I usually watch Conan after Leno simply because for some reason the St. Louis CBS channel puts Ferguson on 30 minutes later than the normal time... And I usually turn off the TV by the time Ferguson is coming on.

I love Jay Leno. The tonight show is entertaining. Some of his skits are hilarious. We love headlines and the President Bush skits. He is so funny when he goes to the streets to talk to everyday people. Conan is not a replacement for Jay Leno. If he does replace him I will find another late night show to watch. Conan is NOT funny.

I LIKE LENO. WHEN HE MOVES I WILL FOLLOW HIM ANYPLACE. AS FAR AS CONAN IS I DO NOT LIKE HIM AT ALL. HE IS BORING. WE LISTEN TO LENO AND DAVE FOR OUR LATE NITE LISTENING.
