24's Morris O'Brian: Annoying or Entertaining?

by Meredith O'Brien, posted Mar 6th 2007 3:04PM

Morris O'Brian on 24A North Carolina newspaper writer wants 24's Morris "Drill Bit" O'Brian to sleep with the fishes. Well, maybe not with the fishes, but he certainly wants the recently tortured CTU analyst to exit stage right. As soon as possible.

The News & Observer's Danny Hooley has given this season's "annoying subplot award" to "the personal anguish of Morris, Chloe's recovering alcoholic British ex-hubby," calling him "an annoying drag" on the action series.

I don't know, aside from the awkward CTU love triangle and Chloe running around and shouting at colleagues in the men's room, I'm warming to the Morris subplot, no matter how ridiculous. It's much better than the Sandra Palmer subplot, where she's an attorney for a Muslim civil rights group. It's also better than the Jack Bauer's-sister-in-law- used-to-be-his-lover- and-might-have-produced-his-love-child story.

So, what do you think? Is the Morris subplot the most annoying feature of this season, or is there another story line you despise?

I agree with Lemon.

Any fan of Joel Surnow's previous television series La Femme Nikita appreciates characters like Morris on 24 - he played (one of the) Mr. Jones on LFN.

Previous LFN characters have made appearances on 24 including the actress who played Madeline, as well as the actor who played Operations.

Leave the guy alone - he's a a better actor than most of the supporting roles on 24.

24 is the best show on TV, what a great plot.

Morris is pretty damn annoying, but I'd be hard pressed to say he's the most annoying. I don't think you can definitively say the show has jumped the shark until the season's over, because there may be some awesome connection between seemingly pointless random plot threads; however, at this point it's not looking promising. Jean Smart returning would be an improvement, IMO.

TV Squad's Meredith O'Brien: annoying.

Seriously Meredith, start a new blog, 24 Squad or something. Way too many useless 24 articles these days. No offense.

This show has always had their ridiculously annoying subplots that have lasted for a few episodes. Teri Bauer's amnesia, Kim's cougar, Chase's baby, the suicidal daughter of the female boss before Buchanan, pretty much anything with Edgar. Oh jesus, much of the random Sherri Palmer killing a guy.

This season I think Sister Palmer trumps Morris's storyline for annoyingness. But I don't expect we're going to see very much more of either.

Any subplot is going to look brilliant next to the return of Logan's wife...the worst character in the history of the show.

I like Morris "The Drill Bit" O'Brian if only for the fun in actually typing out Morris "The Drill Bit" O'Brian. I admit, I like the character for all the wrong reasons. I find his pain to be actually very funny. Whenever he talks I think, "way to get drill bitted you jerk!" Whenever he has an emotional breakdown, I laugh.

Morris rules!

attempting a presidential assasination in a nuclear bunker + the most of the bauer family either saving or destroying the world were the shark jumpers that turned me and my tivo off this season (much like the cougar way back when).

morris coming back an hour after being beaten with baseball bats, drowned, and then drilled thru the shoulder was extra goddamn ridiculous too. especially the part where he gets a drink and spits it out - come on, like he wasn't already flying high on vicodan or oxycontin?!?!?! HE JUST HAD HIS SHOULDER DRILLED!!! If it was Jack, okay. Some IT guy, I don't think so. Then him getting shit for his mind not being on the job. I like the character, but (in my best Gob Bluth voice)
COME ON!!!!

(can you tell i'm really disappointed in 24 this season?)

Any subplot is better than the daughter gets cornered by the cougar subplot.
