Jericho: Heart of Winter

by Paul Goebel, posted Mar 8th 2007 8:21AM

Jericho(S01E14) I got a lot of heat because of my review of last week's show and usually I ignore all criticism because I'm so brilliant. However, when 99% of the comments are negative, I'm forced to take another look at my reviews. So, as I watched Jericho this week, I vowed to pay close attention so as not to miss any pertinent information and it totally paid off. During the opening, the Morse code message clearly said, "Don't bother watching. This episode is kind of lame."

To be honest, I couldn't really concentrate on everything that happened because of the scene early on where Gerald McRaney & Pamela Reed decided to get boozed up. It may me wonder: Why aren't more people getting drunk in the middle of the day? I mean, it's not like anyone has a job to go to and shouldn't a small town like Jericho have at least one town drunk anyway?

I was really hoping that when Mimi had to go get help it would be her chance to redeem herself, Sadly, she did one of the things that I hate to see on TV. She threw away the flashlight after it stopped working. It's just like throwing a gun at somebody when it's out of bullets. Isn't there a chance that she might come across a couple batteries sometime? Her chances of redemption were pretty much shot when she curled into a ball and begged for her life. Oh well, maybe next week.

I enjoyed the action with Hawkins and his girlfriend especially because I now have another cool phrase to add to my Jericho vocabulary along with the package and the old man...the hunter.

Speaking of Hawkins, let me ask you this ... for someone who's supposed to be an FBI bad ass, why does he always sound like he's about to cry? Also, how come he can't see that he is obviously being played? I mean, who goes out "for a walk" in the freezing cold at night with looters and wild dogs around every corner? Wise up friend.

I really dug this show when it premiered but since it's return, I've been pretty disappointed in the tragedy of the week. It appears that next week, the town will get it's power back, so hopefully that will be interesting or maybe "the old man" will find out about "the hunter" and decide to deliver "the package."

"but really he was following oders to save American lives where the normal innocence of a child does not apply. "

I used to love coming to Tv Squad for interesting takes on Jericho...not all reviews were positive, but they weren't biting and un-funny, they actually reveal new information. Paul, I'm sorry but I hate your writing, tone and style. It reeks of someone trying way hard to be negative, but you come off like a douche bag. Please stop writing.

Scott: Interesting post!

And you answered my burning question - doesn't Jericho have any bloody hybrid cars? I was thinking that for many of the most recent episodes, seeing them worried about gas but driving old gas guzzlers - but totally forgot about the emp pulse, which of course would have scrambled any brainbox inside these current models.

It would also make sense that more current vehicles are seen "out in the wild", perhaps still drivable outside of the emp pulse areas.

Look at www.fema.Gov/publications
Titled "ARE YOU READY?" Fema will send out the book to you for free, and It's a good resource.

This is my first blog on the show. I've been a great fan. The house stops around here, I mean no phones, family is quiet and all watching when Jericho comes on. I would like the writers to consider some things that might help better the show from a constructive intent, not a critical one;
Has anyone counted the number of guns Jake has lost since the first episode? It has to be somewhere around nine of them. Everytime he goes out he loses one or two.
In episode 14 when they are being chased by a 2001 Chevy 4X4, Jake leans out the window and fires two rounds from a Glock 9mm. Why did he not shoot the windshield repeatedly, and drop those rounds into the cab to stop the aggression? If nothing else several rounds in the radiator would have been effective, without killing, if that was what CBS wanted or would approve.
All vehicles made after April 1987 have fuel injection and eletronic components vaunerable to electro-magnetic pulse. It would not function, and to try to retro fit it under the current situation would be next to impossible. The 1968 Jeep Comanche/ Commando Stanley was driving was not unibody, and made of really heavy gague steel. The sheer weight and wheelbase would do serious damage to the newer vehicle, and not let it flip from a sand dune. More likely it would have climbed up off the road. The little brush guard on the newer truck is not strong enought to be effective. It will bend into the radiator brackets. Either way I see the concept of character developement based on crisis. I'm entertained, just unsure why ther are not more people armed with more effective weapons than hunting bolt actions. At least one person should have a cheap AK sytle weapon or somthing in .223 AR-15. or .308 G-3 HK-91 type rifles. All of which will be effective in preventing highway robbery in any hunting party. Look how close they got when the Chevy blocked the road at a flank. It could have easily been disabled. I'm not bagging on the show, I love the concept, but I don't see any real orginization other than town meetings with the mayor. Every person over the age of 10 would be armed in this scenario.
As far as Jake killing a girl in Iraq, it was most likely that he didn't stop the convoy when she wouldn't get out of the road. Insurgents like to detour convoys using children to redirect them into an ambush bottle neck. The standing orders were to slow down and lay on the horn, and flash headlights, trying to get them out of thr path but DO NOT STOP, keep rolling and hope you have just not made her a maryter for the "Islamic Gihad," It should bother him, but really he was following oders to save American lives where the normal innocence of a child does not apply.
I see the National Guard Marine compliment coming up as the muscle of the closeist "newly declared Presidents" for the region.
This is setting the tone for Regional Administrators under the dircetion of FEMA to be deployed to the area just like outlined in the FEMA policy. This is our REAL CURRENT PLAN should a scenario like Jericho happen.
Maybe you writers could Jake a (Lanyard)dummy cord for his next pistol. Daddy Green could suggest it as a moment of levity during one of their talks.
I may get flammed for my thoughts, but I think I've made some technical points that need addressed to impropve the show. By the way I'd like to see that girl from earlier that went to build a windmill part come back and hook-up with Jake. Clearly she is the berrer choice. Barbie is always too high maintanence, and comes with accessory baggage.

I love the show--the story, the pace, the action, the ups and downs, etc. I agree with one thing everyone here is saying-NOBODY CARES ABOUT EMILY & ROGER. Move on with them, please. I think they may be paying a lot of attention to that because maybe Roger is going to do something bad soon?

I seem to recall snow falling about the time Mimi got lost at the crossroads.
Also, for those complaining about the lack of snow in the "middle of winter"...in the show's timeline they are somewhere between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Where I live in Illinois is about the same latitude as where Jericho would be, and lately we don't see any snow until around February sometime.
It's rare for us to get it in December.

I agree that this wasn't the best episode of Jericho, but what's with the hating Mimi, I actually kind of like her since she hooked up with Stanley and it has made both characters more interesting. As for throwing away the flashlight and curling up in a ball and begging for her life, what do you expect from a D.C. girl stuck in the country post nuclear disaster?!
