More network pilot news

by Adam Finley, posted Mar 8th 2007 3:02PM

tvThe networks have added a few new faces to their pilots, because, well, otherwise the shows would just be shot after shot of empty sets, and that's not very exciting. Here's what's goin' on:

Jeffery Tambor (The Larry Sanders Show, Arrested Development) has joined the cast of the CBS comedy The Captain. The series stars Fran Kranz as a writer who moves into an apartment building where Tambor, a retired TV writer, also lives.

Kal Penn of Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle (which is actually a much funnier movie than it has any right to be) will star in The Call, a comedy from ABC about a group of paramedics in Los Angeles.

Stephen Moyer has joined NSA Innocent, a drama pilot for FOX about a man who, surprisingly enough, joins the NSA. Moyer will also appear in the Starter Wife with Debra Messing on USA.

Alex O'Laughlin and Shannon Lucio will star in the CBS drama pilot Twilight. O'Laughlin is a private investigator who also happens to be a vampire. Lucio plays a reporter. The premise sounds an awful lot like Angel, to me.

Hilariously abrasive comedian Bill Burr (Chappelle's Show) will star with Norbert Leo Butz in the FOX comedy pilot Playing Chicken. Burr and Butz will play brothers with opposing political viewpoints who are forced to live together.

Mia Maestro has joined the CBS drama pilot The Man, which stars LL Cool J as an undercover cop raising three adopted kids.

Adam Goldberg has joined the ABC drama pilot Marlowe. Goldberg will play a detective who helps private investigator Phillip Marlowe.

Michelle Trachtenberg (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) will star along with Eric Christian Olsen (The Loop) in the still-untitled comedy pilot for ABC. Olsen plays an aide for a senator who falls in love with his boss' enemy's daughter, played by Trachtenberg.

Hector Elizondo is set to appear in CBS' untitled drama pilot about three generations of a Latin American family.

I just don't see the appeal of Tambor. He was my least favorite on AD.

These shows sound like crap, IMO.

Poor Tambor will never find anything like AD again, and on that note, COME ON, there seems no originality in any of those

What? No new show about how hard it is to be a young, slutty female doctor? They're slippin.

So, basically, the best all of our top TV writers could come up with was retreads of "Saved," "Alias," "Angel," "The Odd Couple," every Philip Marlowe movie ever made, "Romeo and Juliet," "American Family"... oh, and a show about TV writers. And they say there's no originality in Hollywood.
