Controversy flares over Sarah Silverman's holy union

by Julia Ward, posted Mar 9th 2007 9:34AM
Sarah Silverman in bed with GodI'm surprised it took this long for Fox News to decide that Sarah Silverman may have crossed a line. In case you missed Wednesday night's season finale of The Sarah Silverman Program, you may not be aware that A) God is black and B) Sarah had sex with him. Sample dialogue from their throes of passion: "Who made you, monkey? Who created you?" Following their one night stand, Sarah brushed God, played by director Tucker Smallwood, off. (You can watch the clip here.)

The next day conservative website WorldNetDaily had picked up on the story and some negative comments posted at Comedy Central's website. This was, in turn, picked up by Fox News and Newsbusters, a site dedicated to eradicating the liberal bias in media. Yes, chances are, if you can't take the content of South Park or Family Guy, you probably won't be able to stomach Sarah Silverman's sense of humor. There's your barometer. Install a V-Chip, change the channel, cancel your cable subscription, but don't take away Sarah's right to hump and be humped by the deity of her choice.

You raise some good points in your post. Here are some facts that you might find interesting. An overwhelming majority of Americans (91%) object to government deciding what they are able to watch on television. When activists talk about protecting children instead of parents-here's what they're talking about: sixty-eight percent of the country's 110 million television-viewing households do not include children under age 18 and households with children have different challenges to face due to the varying ages of kids within each family. Currently, there are 11 million households with children age 6-11, 15 million households with children age 0-5 and 9 million households with children 12-17.

TV has come a long way from the days of three channels and rabbit ears antennas. Today's TV audiences are putting to use broadband, DVRs, TV video on demand, iPods and cell phones to greatly expand their choices about what, when, where and how to watch TV. New technology means consumers have more selection than ever and more control than ever over what they see on TV. We all have more choices and parents have more tools to ensure their kids only see what's right for them. Let's let parents decide-not government, for all of us.

I love Sarah.

It's no surprise that God slept with her. He does have a thing for Jewish chicks.

It's interesting to note that this episode seems to have been the first one of the series; one can only speculate that it was held back and aired so far out of order so that the series could gain a foothold before springing a scene that the ubiquitous moral watchdogs of America would flip out over.

What is it with people complaining all the time? There were those extremely dumb complaints about the Superbowl ("I think my son might be gay now"), and now this. We all know this is happening because "God" was black.

Are people that insecure when it comes to their religion that they have to start complaining all the time? Just ignore this show...and don't start on the whole "we are being persecuted" issue.

"Had the SS show mocking AIDS awareness had a higher profile I'm certain, those people would be all bent out of shape as well."

Actually Mike, Sarah was featured in the most recent issue of The Advocate which praised her hilarious takes on gays and AIDS in its "Big Gay Following" section. I'm not trying to say that gay people make fewer pointless complaints than xtians, but in every instance I think we all need to examine whether a joke is intentionally hurting someone, or an honest attempt at harmless humour.

Yet no one complained about being "Touched By An Angel."

I actually saw the episode and my reaction during the show was "I don't care about race, God can be whomever you want" but then during the 'let's get it on' sequence, my thoughts became, "Oh here we go, the you know what is going to hit the you know what..." Which proves my point controversy drives ratings...

Man, how many people actually WATCHED the SS program? I was thoroughly bored by "Jesus is Magic" but this show is hysterical. My somewhat humor impaired wife loves the show as do I. I also love South Park but let's face it, subtlety is not the show's strong point.

I think The SS Program is as funny AND smart as shows such as Arrested Development/Mr. Show/Curb Your Enthusiasm.

BTW, I am fairly conservative. Had the SS show mocking AIDS awareness had a higher profile I'm certain, those people would be all bent out of shape as well. There are humorless people on the left and the right.

Lots of Sarah hate. I've been a fan for a long time and I've seen her do stand up probably 6-7 times. She kills everytime. Guess some people don't dig on people that mock our society. Shrug.

Haven't seen her show - I've got my 5 tivoed shows and that's enough. I'll catch this on DVD. Doubt very much I'll be offended; really not much can offend me.
