Comedian Richard Jeni dead from an apparent suicide

by Joel Keller, posted Mar 11th 2007 5:32PM
Richard JeniWow. Here's a shocker for a Sunday afternoon: Comedian Richard Jeni has passed away from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 45 years old (Update: Jeni's web site cites his year of birth as 1957).

According to this AP report (via CNN), Jeni's girlfriend called police and told them "my boyfriend shot himself in the face." Jeni was found in a West Hollywood home barely alive, and he died in the hospital soon afterwards.

You've likely seen Jeni many times, as a guest on various talk shows (he appeared on The Tonight Show often, with both Johnny Carson and Jay Leno), or on HBO specials like Platypus Man or last year's A Big Steaming Pile of Me. He first appeared nationally on a 1990 Showtime special entitled Richard Jeni: Boy From New York City.

Jeni had a very abrupt but funny style, which made sense, given his Brooklyn upbringing. He was a respected elder-statesman of the stand-up world, and still had fresh material and perspectives, even after a couple of decades in the comedy trenches. He'll definitely be missed.

[thanks to Jon for the tip.]

I had the pleasure to see Richard Jeni live a few years back. He was a fantastic comedian. I had seen him for years on TV and he always made me laugh. He was a true pro of the comedy game. His death is a tragic loss to his family and all of us who enjoyed laughing with his humor. He will be greatly missed. I would like to think wherever he is now he still has everyone laughing. Rest in Peace Richard Jeni.

Richard Jeni's family doesn't need to wait for the coroner's report.

The comic, in the throws of severe clinical depression that was "coupled with bouts of psychotic paranoia," committed suicide, the family said Tuesday.

"He was not down or blue," the family said. "He was ill."

Jeni's clinical depression was diagnosed earlier this year, the statement said. The illness led him to cancel gigs for the first time in more than 20 years.

"One only needs to have a family member or friend with a mental illness to understand that there is nothing rational, predictable or fair about these diseases," the family said.

I remember hearing not long ago that he was sick but I never heard from what.

I found these 2 pics of him and as you can see he doesn't look very healthy, or at least not as healthy as he did.

The first page is from the Bob & Tom show has a pic of him from last June as well as one of his promo shots in which he looked much healthier.

I think he was diagnosed with a terminal illness, which is why he committed suicide, not because he was "weak". I'm not sure the details of the illness, but it takes guts to give all your money to charity and end your life, instead of dying long and painful.

Very sad... depression get's another one. To all those who say depression isn't real... take another look! Untreated depression often ends this way.

I could be wrong but I never saw him do Shatner, are you sure you aren't confusing him with Kevin Pollak?

Jeni was a very funny comedian and I hope he has found the peace he was searching for. My heart goes out to his family :(

Yeah, John. You're a genius. If he was weak, no one should mourn. Because you know all great comedy, tragedy, art, philosophy and invention comes from strengh and perfection. We should discard everything in life that comes from weakness or imperfection. Those Nazis, they had something.
P.S. In case you couldn't recognize it, this is sarcasm. Good-bye Richard, I wish I could have helped.
