Update: Here's who will fill in for Regis starting today

by Bob Sassone, posted Mar 13th 2007 8:20AM

ReegeAnna told you yesterday about Regis Philbin's surprise announcement that he will undergo a heart bypass procedure this week. Philbin's last day for at least five weeks was yesterday, and the show has announced who will fill in for him while he's recuperating.

Today and tomorrow, CNN's Anderson Cooper, who has guest-hosted the show before, will take over for Regis in the chair next to Kelly Ripa. Then on Thursday and Friday, MTV's Damien Fahey will fill in. Then there will be a rotating group of celebs who will take over, and that list includes Jeff Probst, Martin Short, Donald Trump, Neil Patrick Harris, Howie Mandel, and Pat Sajak.

Wait a sec...no women? I know they like to have that male/female dynamic on the show, but come, who wouldn't watch Kathie Lee Gifford sit next to Kelly Ripa for a few days?

I think that Mr. Kelly Ripa, the gorgeous Mark should co-host alot. the two of them are so funny together. Not too mushy. But i agree that Letterman should sit in for Regis at least once. He likes Kelly. It would be neat to see him on in the morning. But I don't think he would.

To answer comment No. 4, they've had black celebrities that have co-hosted with Kelly Ripa before. Bryant Gumbel has done it a few times. Sean "Diddy" Combs has done it too, and he was quite good, avoiding his more flamboyant image. So Michael Gelman has had a diverse mix of people to co-host with Kelly Ripa. But I can't STAND Jeff Probst when he does it--he's annoying to me. And I don't think they'll get Clay Aiken after that fiasco back in November. He acted too arrogant and self centered, a complete opposite from the fine job he does with his music. But Gelman's going to have to scramble to find any celebrity to co-host with Kelly or track anyone who will be flying in to New York City. At least for the next 25-30 shows. The co-hosts are good, but everybody would rather see Regis do it! His happy, jolly image is what pulls everybody in.

David Letterman ought to do at least one day since Reeg filled in for him a day or two during his surgery.

Anderson Cooper's defense against the people who say he's a product of media hype rather than a real journalist isn't being helped by him doing this kind of thing.
