Rodrigo Santoro: In the Limelight

by Isabelle Carreau, posted Mar 22nd 2007 12:40PM
Rodrigo SantoroI could start Rodrigo Santoro's In the Limelight as I did for Kiele Sanchez's post and only change a few words: Since [his] first appearance on Lost as plane crash survivor [Paulo], fans of the show have not been embracing the [actor]. Part of it may be because [his] character, as well as [Kiele Sanchez's Nikki], sort of appeared out of nowhere (even though [Paulo] was supposedly in the background since season 1). Part of it may also be because the writing for [his] character has not been stellar. Part of it is surely also because fans do not know who [Rodrigo Santoro] is.

The Brazilian actor, nicknamed "The Brazilian Tom Cruise" by some media, has officially been in the acting business for almost 14 years now. This not-that-known-in-the-US-yet actor has been part of some 30 movies and television series, mostly in his home country.

Nowadays, aside from working on four projects (one with Hilary Duff and John Cusack), Santoro is part of ABC's hit series Lost and fans will finally get to properly meet his character Paulo when a Nikki/Paulo-centric episode of the series airs on March 28.

Rodrigo Santoro's career began when he starred as Pedro on the Brazilian show Olho no Olho. He started to appear in American features when he landed a role on Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle in 2003. Fans may also remember him as Karl in Love Actually.

Some trivia about the actor that some fans may not know is that Santoro, born Rodrigo Junqueira Reis Santoro, was listed in People's "50 Most Beautiful" in 2004 and that he appeared in various commercials, the most famous being the Chanel No. 5 ad with Nicole Kidman.

In January 2007, the 31-year-old actor told the Brazilian edition of Rolling Stone that he wouldn't be on Lost comes Season 4 of the show. However, looking at his IMDb profile, it seems that the man, who dubbed Stuart Little in the Brazilian versions of both movies featuring the mouse, will not be out of a job so soon. His career is still flourishing and maybe his March 28 episode of Lost will help push his career a little bit further.

Ooh, if Rodrigo is there, I might have to start watching Lost! He was brilliantly ridiculous in the Brazilian soap Mulheres Apaixonadas... until he left for the US to go make real money, of course.

Portuguese trivia: Rodrigo is actually pronounced "Hodrigo".

"...a seven foot tall drag queen with a digitally altered voice that sounded like the "I'm gonna butter your bread" line from Super Troopers?"

I loved 300, but when Xerxes told Leonidas how he would show him his divine power...I fell apart laughing.

"But no mention of his role in 300 as a seven foot tall drag queen with a digitally altered voice that sounded like the "I'm gonna butter your bread" line from Super Troopers? (I loved the movie, but the portrayal of Xerxes was... odd)"

Bill: I never saw "300" so I didn't know how big his other roles her not. Thank you for adding a comment about this so people know more about him in that movie.

I hadn't placed it, but I actually do remember him from that Nicole Kidman commercial... weird.

Hello? All of this and no mention that he is currently in the most popular movie in the world right now?

That would be "300".

Can you believe he was Xerxes in 300? a big WTF there. That must've been a lot of makeup.
