Yes, they are. Ron Moore clears up BSG's season finale

bsg; battlestar galacticaIf you have not seen Sunday night's kickass season finale, STOP READING NOW. (But come back after you see it, because you will have questions)

Battlestar Galactica executive producer Ron Moore answered a few questions from a reporter at Pittsburgh's Post-Gazette that clear up some of the confusion from last night. For instance? Yes, they are Cylons. Chief, Saul, Sam and Tori heard the music when they reached a certain point in space, signaling their awareness of who they are. Moore says, "These are four of the final five, which puts them in a separate category from everybody else." Who is Cylon #5? Moore doesn't say. But he does promise that, next season, we'll get to discover the backstory for the new Cylons as they try to figure out how this could happen.

While he does clear up the Are-They-or-Aren't-They mystery, he doesn't say anything revealing about Starbuck's return. Is she a hallucination? A Cylon? Moore says, "It's exactly the kind of thing I want people to chew over the next few months" ("Few"?!? Season 4 doesn't start 'til January!). Katee Sackhoff, who plays Starbuck, is signed on for the next season.

He also reveals quite a bit about why Roslin's cancer has returned. It is, he says, to fulfill the prophecy that "a dying leader" will get them near the promised land but will not survive to see it herself. Why does Roslin communicate with the other Cylons through visions? No answer there.

That's all we learn about the finale.

As for the movie that's coming out in the fall, Moore describes it as "just a couple of extra episodes for the fourth season that will air earlier than the rest of the season." It is, he confirms, about the Pegasus and Admiral Cain. But, he says, it also sets up one storyline for the next season. "It's an opportunity to set up something for the fourth season that had not been told to the audience and that the characters themselves had not realized."

Chris: Like I've said before, Anders is the most persuasive arguement against. (May have been the post for the season finale, and not in this thread).

Are you implying that US Aircraft Carrier XOs have TS clearance? I didn't know that (or just never thought about it).

It is a long time to put them in, but I don't think it was some plan, necessarily. First, if the other skin jobs are the ones with the plan, if they don't even know the final five, then there's nothing to say that they are part of the plan. Second, Moore has said time and time again that the tag line, "... and they have a plan" was not his addition, so quite litteraly, I just ignore it :)

This sucks. BSG is going out the airlock for me. There are too few living characters to relate to. Apollo is a weanie, starbuck is dead (ok she is a ghost or something--whatever) Three of their strongest characters are now skin jobs. Until I read this I had myself convinced they where picking up radio waves from earth and just thought they where Cylons. Instead they are Cybernetic Bob Dylan fans... or maybe Hendrix??? Lame..really lame. I am done. I can't believe I paid for this thing on Itunes.

This may have changed, but Moore has previously stated (sorry, can't cite this at the moment) that there never was an "original" for the 12 cylon models.

They're all supposed to be archetypes of different human personalities, but there never was a "real" Sharon or Tigh or Tyrol, and any memories they have of families & childhood are implanted fakes.

If that's still the case, then there has to be a point that these people were implanted into human society (military, sports, politics, etc) before they got paper trails and whatever other fame...

Will have to go back and review some of season 2 but I think it was mentioned that Adama knew tigh for over 20 years. Thats a long time and a hell of a plan to put Tigh in place 20 years before, and you have to admit that Tigh has had a few frakken problems.. How long ago was it when they served on a freighter shown in flashback when Adama came to offer him a new position? The real Tigh being alchoholic, and perhaps not to long before the attack, the real Tigh is picked up, brain patterns copied and downloaded into cylon Tigh, real Tigh eliminated, and cylon Tigh goes on not knowing anything is different.

Tigh being XO of a Battlestar, would hold a Top Secret security clearance, background checks had to be conducted by FBI, Defense Intel Agency type, people who knew him, throuout his life, his first background check would have been when he joined the military, and periodic background checks as he rose in rank and position, There would be a paper trail...

Same goes with Chief...

How long has Anders been a Pryimid (it was pryomid right) player? He was an Allstar player right, and you have to figure he played in collage and high school right. just like and NFL or NBA player, he would have a paper trail, going back at least 15 years or so, if you figure around 6-8 years in school and maybe another 7-8 years or so as a pro just based on his age, or did this guy just come out of nowhere and became an allstar player that everyone in the colonies knew who he was?

So my vote is that the real ones got replaced sometime before the attacks.

wilymon: Yes it does. I think Moore even touches on that in one of his interviews (not this one, but AICN has a couple more linked together). I also like the possibility (theory) that Hera is not the first Hybrid, and that kara is. If so...

A little food for thought:

- In the episode when Roslin threw Leobon out the airlock, before he died Leobon whispered into Roslins ear "Adama is a cylon..." Considering all the opinions and theories thus far, this is probably not the case. However...we may at least be allowed to wonder.

- Who were those women that protected Baltar? I wonder if those fanatical followers have formed an underground movement for him.

- I have often wanted to know the details in Adamas acceptance and friendship for Sharon ( other than the lonliness factor etc.). Could it be that their reconciliation could have been in the writers plans all along as a convienient precedent for allowing Adama to let the future cylon-Tigh to remain in the fleet as his second-in command.

- Since we know the chief is a cylon, will that eventually make him re-examine his past relationship with Boomer. Not break off with Cally necsessarily, but at least look at Boomer in a completely different way. I'd love to see that confrontation.

- These latest cylons may indeed be special (as Akbar suggests). But special or no, Sharon has demonstrated that each cylon can harbor their own independent thoughts and course of action. In this case loyalty. As a matter of fact, Caprica 6 proves this as well. I'm thinking that these latest four cylons will remain what Sharon has become....a loyal ally. Especially Tigh.

Saul Tigh didn't need to exist before he met Adama. That's the only reference point that we know that has to be real. He could have been planted right before he met Adama, with backstory installed.

How long ago was that, though?

Thrace saw a similar bogey, appearing and disappearing on radar. However shiny her ship is now, something sure exploded when she and Lee were flying patrol. I do think it's interesting that she says, "I've been to Earth, I know where it is, and I'm going to take us there." She doesn't include Lee--she doesn't seem to need his help at all, which she probably would if she were only in his mind. Just a minor detail.

Really interesting way of working in "All Along The Watchtower" that focuses more on the characters than the fact that they're hearing a song we know. Anyone want to take a stab at the last lines, which seem pretty fitting: "Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl / Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl."

I just wish they'd chosen a different vocalist. Not that it had to be Dylan or Hendrix or Bono. But the song is building the entire episode, including the addition of BSG's typical-intro drum corp, and they pull a kid who chews his vowels like it's twice-grilled beef to whine a few lines. That just hurts, man. That's just mean.

The Cylon war was 40-50 years ago, Tigh says he has been in the military for almost 40 years, and he looks to be in his mid to upper fifties, Chief has been in the service for 20 years and is about 38yo.

The last time the humans saw the cylons before the mini series, they looked like the 70's tv series models, (one of the pictures in the file of the guy on the outpost in the 1st scene of the mini, and also was on display in the Galactica "museieum").

How could the cylons develop (sp) the "skinjobs" 40 years ago?

Perhaps Tigh was a real human as well as some of the other and where replaced at somepoint by the cylons with there memories transfered into the "skinjobs". I would think this is more plauseable as Saul Tigh existed before the cylon war...

Sharon's memeories of a fire that killed her family and she was the only one to survive, perhaps thats when she was replaced, the real Sharon was taken and her memeories transfered to the "8"

Perhaps Earth was the starting point of everything, that Galactica takes place in our distant future.. Mankind when to Kobal and from there the 12 colonies. and are returning to Earth the birthplace of man.?

How would an Earth song be programmed into the 4? How would they know the name is Earth? When did we (man) begine calling this planet we live on Earth? the Greeks? Romans?

Just my 2 cents..

Well Chris, they maybe Cylons, but they sure aint any kind of cylon we have dealt with yet.

Amd aging? Saul has defintley aged. Look at him in the flashbacks in early season 2.

The cylon numbering sequence can not be a sequential thing. The numbers we know:

that leaves Simon, Leoban, and Cavil. Either way you put the numbers (guessing on those three) the final five cant be first or last sequentially.

My best guess is the fact that there are 12 models and 12 lords of Kobol. The numbers correspond somehow between them.
