TV Squad blogger: Jay Black

Jay BlackWhere do you write from?
I write from the beautiful town of Marlton, New Jersey. Marlton gets its name from the large amount of marl in our soil. I'm not sure what marl is or what it does, but I'm hoping that it's not radioactive. Unless it's the kind of cool radiation that gives you super powers, that would be okay.

Craziest/funniest TV Squad comment you've seen?
Oh there are so many different ways for my readers to tell me I'm an awful human being, why limit me to just one? I guess, gun to head, my favorite "you suck" comment would have to be this one from rndmnme, commenting on the video I made for the TV Squad meet-up:

"Maybe if you stop ripping off Seth MacFarlane (Horribly, I might add), Pick something other than"Back in Black" as a theme, ohhh we get it Jay Black, Back In Black, you must have tipped that one to Comedy Central and Lewis Black, and stopping being an overly pretentious fool like you have been in your past writings, then you might actually get someone to leave you creepy comments. That is unless, you consider "You're not funny" creepy"

That one has it all... a personal attack, an attack on the post in question, AND an attack on my past work collectively.

I realize that this question asked for the "craziest/funniest" comment, but I don't remember the good ones. Only the bad ones. I tattoo them to my thigh like the guy from Memento.

If you were only able to watch one TV show, what would it be?
This is a no-brainer. The Simpsons. For three reasons:

1) It's got a ton of episodes.

2) Regardless of what you fanboys say, the quality hasn't dipped that much. In fact, I think you can make the argument that The Simpsons have maintained the highest average quality of any show lasting longer than 10 seasons. Including Bonanza. (It's a fact: during the final two seasons of Bonanza Lorne Greene can be seen mouthing the words "please kill me" whenever he wasn't talking.)

3) They're still currently making episodes... and, with Fox's current comedy batting average, they'll probably keep making episodes for years to come. So, unlike any of the other contenders (Sopranos, Larry Sanders, Seinfeld, etc.) there's a chance I might be watching new episodes of this choice well into our zombie-ruled future.

Most overrated and underrated TV show (current or past)?
Since I'm writing long anyway, I'm going to break this into FOUR categories:

1) Overrated (currently on the air): Ugly Betty. Every ten seconds, someone is giving an award to this show. The only award this show should win is, "Show most likely to make me want to punch one of its cast members in the face."

2) Underrated (currently on the air): Family Guy. A lot of people write this show off as being a collection of meaningless non sequiturs cobbled together for the benefit of beer-soaked frat boys. And, uh, those people have a point. I also think those people have a tendency to unfairly turn off to the show because of this. If you can get beyond that initial reaction, you'll see that it's actually a really funny way to spend a half hour.

3) Overrated (in history): Seinfeld. That's not to say I don't love this show (I mean, hell, it's on the short list for "Show that I'd watch if I could only watch one show"), but I do think people tend it give it too much credit, like it was the Platonic ideal of sitcomness. It's great, and Kramer is goofy and all, but let's stop with the superlatives.

4) Underrated (in history): Night Court. I feel uncomfortable with this as a permanent choice, but I was just reading about it on wikipedia (thanks internets!) and I spent a few minutes recalling how much this show used to make me laugh. So, there you go Night Court. You caught me on the right night.

Best benefit of writing for TV Squad?
Getting to put on whatever I want and when my wife wants to change the channel, saying, "But I need to watch that... for work."

Also, and this is a little known sub-clause of the contract I signed with AOL, I get my body weight in Heinz Premium Relish sent to my house once a fortnight.

Where else can we see you on the web?
I'm glad you asked that: my day job is stand-up comedy. Come see me at www.jayblackcomedy.com. There is about a half hour worth of (free) video and also a full schedule of where I'm going to be touring next. Don't just comment about how horrible I am! Come out to my shows and tell me in person!

Why do you write such long articles and reviews?
There are a few possible answers to this, but like the ending of the movie Clue only one of them is correct. I'll let you decide...

1) My favorite online writer is Bill Simmons and he's well-known for his wordy columns. I'm simply trying to emulate him.

2) Since the internet frees us to ignore word count, I do my best to provide the readers with as much content as possible.

3) I like to hear myself talk (or, as the case may be, read myself write).

(Hint: The answer is number 3).

In all honesty, I love writing for TV Squad. I was a fan of this site for a long time before I was a writer; it means a lot to me that they accepted me into their fold and raised me as one of their own. I hope you guys like what I write even just a little bit as much as I like what all the other talented members of TV Squad write.

How completely random. I've had one of the most unproductive days of my life. I spent it strolling down one meme after another on the internet. At some point this morning, I ended up reading about Night Court on wikipedia -- exactly as you mentioned in your bio; but that little happenstance has absolutely nothing to do with how I ended up here!

Taking a break from the home office, I watched the Biggest Loser on DVR with my wife during my lunch break. I felt the need to post an angst-filled comment about crazy Tracey to people I don't know, and ended up here via Google.

When I realized I had no clue where 'here' was, I clicked Meet the TV Squad. Some colorful headshots popped up, most of which looked they belonged to bloggers... except one. There was a guy with a mic and a brick wall. A guy who was brave enough to subject himself to heckles in front of dumb drunk nobodies.

I read the interesting bio and note the appropriate levels of self-loathing and thick-skinnedness before reading that Night Court was one of the most underrated shows in history... a conclusion I drew not 5 hours ago.

I am convinced that if I didn't experience these wild bouts of synchronicity, the universe would begin to make far too much sense.

My nominee for overrated show is "30 Rock." At least two of the cast members aren't funny (Baldwin and Morgan) and it gets award after award.

And, how popular would Tina Fey be if Sarah Palin had never appeared on the politial scene?

I used to love "Night Court," but it's one of those shows that, for some reason, doesn't repeat much. A million stations air M*A*S*H, Seinfeld and 2.5 Men. Wouldn't you think somebody would want to mix it up a little?

Add to the Underrated list: Newhart. One of the best finale episodes ever.

To choose a show because it hasn't become crap seems a bit limiting.

Even if I went along with the idea that the quality of the Simpsons hasn't gone down to virtually nil, the fact that it isn't utterly crap is no reason to keep it on the air and to keep watching just because the episodes are new, it's also not something that should be used as a positive in relation to judgement of the show as a whole.

If one show had 6 great years and was cancelled and another show has 4 equally great years and then 10 that are shit I'd take the one with 6 (made up numbers) anyway. Shit is shit, irrespective of how much of it there is. Quantity doesn't add up to quality.

I think the problem comes in how you interpret the question. I was under the impression it was asking me if I had only _one show to watch for ever_ which show would I choose and why. I think in that case, quantity is very much a consideration, because you have to weigh in novelty along with quality.

I think that for "beginning to end goodness" nothing can beat the original BBC run of The Office. That being said, with that series, you only get about eight hours of entertainment. Even with the high rewatchability of that show, I would gouge out my own eyeballs after about three weeks.

You therefore _have_ to choose a show with a lot of episodes. The Simpsons had about eight years of perfection followed by ten years of "Pretty Good to Above Average" (in my opinion). In the context of this question, I can't think of a better choice than The Simpsons.

(Now, if the question was, "If you had to send one complete season set of any show into space to let aliens know what the best thing humanity can create is, what would it be and why?" I would have answered much differently)

I thought I was the only person in the world who hated Ugly Betty. Knowing that you want to punch the cast members in the face made me simultaneously laugh and punch my roommates for always watching that show. Oops, I mean want to punch them. I never would. One is freakishly strong, and she could beat me up.
