That WKRP DVD set is going to suck

by Bob Sassone, posted Apr 1st 2007 2:58PM

WKRPOver at his cool pop culture blog Something Old, Nothing New, Jaime Weinman posts a list of the changes coming to that long-awaited WKRP in Cincinnati DVD set, and the changes aren't going to make fans happy. Not at all. In fact, it's worse than we could have imagined.

Almost all of the songs are being replaced, even ones that you might have heard in the butchered syndicated episodes several years back. Even songs like "Jailhouse Rock." But that's not even the worst news. As Weinman reports, because they haven't separated the dialogue track from the music track, they are going to actually cut out whole scenes so the music (that they couldn't get the rights to) isn't in the scene. That, fans, is barbaric.

I honestly think that most WKRP fans, even though they've waited a long time for the show to come out on DVD, won't even buy this set. I mean, even Jennifer's (Loni Anderson) doorbell playing "Fly Me To The Moon" is going to be replaced with generic music. Ugh.

Unbelievable, but not surprising. They stand to make less money after having paid higher amounts to use the original music. Without th e music, several episodes will not make sense - while the initial info about this box set was that "some" songs would be replaced, I did not imagine a way around Arthur's "Do you hear dogs barking?" to Johnny's "I do" with Pink Floyd in the background, I never imagined that the segment would be removed! They should be ashamed of themselves for this and the only appropriate response from the fans is to boycott it altogether. What they have to realize is that instead of only making millions for having secured the rights and putting the show out in the only acceptable format (unedited / unchanged), they will get nothing from people downloading lesser quality versions for nothing. It seems all these years of waiting for this have been in vain. Sad.

Why produce this DVD at all. Without the ORIGINAL music the show will suck .... plain and simple. WKRP brings back fond memories of my youth and I want to remember the show the way it was. I'm willing to pay double maybe triple the price for WKRP as it should be. Can't these business executives figure out that the true WKRP fan will not buy this DVD set. Have evrything original and they'll make plenty of $$$$$$$$

I'm wondering if The Mormon Tabernacle Choir singing, "She's Having My Baby," from the first episode will be included.

They should release these shows without the soundtrack at all, and then put in a cue on the commentary track where someone explains when a certain song is supposed to be played. That way, the home user with video editing skillz can edit and mix in the song themselves. Better than nothing.

That's truly ugly. Reminds me of how excited I was about the "Greatest American Hero" DVDs until I found out they replaced "Eve of Destruction" in the best episode of the second season, which was absolutely critical to the plot. I hate the fact that there's a DVD set of a show I loved so much out there, but it won't ever be on my shelf. It's just not the show I watched--it's some kind of butchered mutant. I'm sure "WKRP" fans will feel that way, even more so.

Guess this means I'll be saving some money....

I am not buying that. I'd rather go without.
