Lewis Black's new pilot taping in Los Angeles tomorrow afternoon

by Adam Finley, posted Apr 4th 2007 7:42PM

lewis blackThe Root of All Evil, a new pilot for Comedy Central starring Lewis Black and featuring comedians Patton Oswalt, Greg Giraldo, and Paul F. Tompkins (not Paul S. Tompkins, as this Craigslist ad reads) is taping tomorrow night in Los Angeles, so if you're in LA and looking for something to do, buy yourself some tickets, and then kick yourself for paying money for free tickets.

The show, from the producers of Real Time with Bill Maher, centers on Black and his panel of guests who discuss current events in what one assumes will be a funny manner. The show is described thusly: "If you're a fan of Politically Incorrect or Real Time but don't understand the words, then this is your show."

I think the last time something like this was attempted was Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn, and I grew tired of that show pretty quickly. Still, I like Lewis Black, so this show could have potential. If anyone out there actually goes to this taping, come back and let us all know how it was, okay? Okay.

I caught the pilot last night. What a dog! It is not a talk show format, but rather a mock trial to decide which of two obnoxious topics (chick flicks vs video games; Paris Hilton vs Cheney) is the "Root of All Evil." Louis black is wasted as the judge. The comedians were all funny (the first time. They did several takes) but by the end of the first episode, we were all tired of the premise. The guest comedians are attorneys and spar with each other, but with mostly pre-written materials. Louis of course, dropped the F-Bomb on multiple occasions. It wasn't however, the only bomb of the evening.

I wish I could go over to the studio and watch it today, but my day is booked out. The fact that it is from the producers of RTBM is a huge plus. I hope the pilot gets picked-up!

Real Time is one of my favorite shows so I will most definitely give this a shot.

It's actually Paul F. Tompkins, no H.

Yeah, for me the problem with Tough Crowd was that I hate Colin Quinn and most of the comics on that show were the kind that irritate me. This show corrects that problem by de-Quinn-ing the show and replacing it with one of my favorite comics. Plus, the production team behind this is great, which gives me more confidence. If we're going to make the comparison to Tough Crowd, then this is Tough Crowd done right.

I loved Tough Crowd, so I could see this being just like that. However, I just hope that Black doesn't go off on his rants all the time, that could get old really quick. If he's more subdued, that could work!
