Scrubs: My Long Goodbye

On the Set of Scrubs

(S06E15) All right, before we begin this week's review I have been told to present the following reminder . . . Remember when Kevin Kelly and my brother Joel visited the set of Scrubs back in February? Well, they were there when this very episode was filmed. In other words, they knew who was going to die long before any of us did. We couldn't pry the secret out of them by any means. Even suitcases full of kittens didn't budge them. So, I think we're all glad that the, ahem, cat is out of the bag. Thank you, I'll be here all week!

Done and done. Let's get to this week's show. Even though we knew who was dying by the end of the last episode, it was still quite sad to see Laverne laying there on the edge of death. I think that the good-byes everyone made enhanced the emotion as well. Some were very short, like J.D.'s and Cox's farewells, while others were quite poignant. I thought that the the good-byes of Elliot, Carla and, yes, Janitor were the most emotional. True, Janitor's speech was for laughs, but there was genuine emotion in what he said, and you don't see that a lot coming from him.

As you would suspect, Carla was the one most affected by Laverne's passing. So much so that memories of her friend manifested itself into an imaginary Laverne that followed her everywhere. This resulted in a neat scene where Carla asks Dr. Cox if he ever has images of dead people following him. He scoffs at the idea but then turns to find Jill Tracy greeting him from beyond the grave. Seems she got pregnant in Heaven. Actually, after he mentioned that I thought that Brendan Fraser would pop up right behind him. Because, as we all know, an image of Ben Sullivan appeared with Perry after he passed away.

Let's see, what else? Well, we finally know why Perry was bald during that clips episode: he shaved his head just for fun. It looked weird on him in that episode, but looked okay in this one. I liked how everyone had something to say about his new hairstyle, especially Dr. Kelso who asked 'Are you on-call tonight, or will you be fighting Superman?'. I can forgive Perry for shaving his head because after he put down the razor he put on a Rutgers T-Shirt. My alma mater.

On the family front, Jordan finally had her baby. That was a long pregnancy. Didn't she get pregnant not too long after Carla did? And, didn't she look so fresh and clean after having her baby removed by C-section? My wife roomed with two women who had C-sections after the birth of our two oldest children. They were not a fresh and clean as Jordan was.

Finally, we need to talk about J.D. because he was extraordinarily J.D. in this episode. I had thought that he was past the idolizing stage with Dr. Cox, but he seemed to be licking at his heels this week. It was almost like we were watching a Dr. Dorian from a few season's ago. In addition to that he seemed very selfish this time around. Every time someone was talking to him his inner monologue would just go crazy. I did like how he tried to convince Perry and Jordan to name their new daughter Jennifer Dillon so she would be nicknamed J.D. as well.

All and all, a good, solid episode and a nice good-bye to Laverne, one of the unsung players on this program.

So ummm, does anyone know why they killed her off? I'd like to know because she is a nice lady, a great actress and a total hit to the shows success??? Are they going to bring her back??? Also did they get new writers, the show doesn't seem like its old self to me, big changes or am I imagining???

i love how elliot has gone from the first christmas episode, (dr. kelso mocking her with 'awww look at the baby') and avoiding an obgyn specialty to the point where she gets cut off by her dad - to having a super sensitive glowing uterus...

i almost died laughing.

I thought this was a great episode. The funny and sad elements were blended well. Carla's goodbye was really well done with the song "A Bad Dream" being a nice touch as well. Bring back Scrubs for season 7 its one of the few good shows on TV.

@Farrar

It was "A Bad Dream", by Keane. It's from their newest album, "Under the Iron Sea."
