The Riches: The Big Floss

minnie driver(S01E05) Last week I mentioned that the scene with Doug trying to handle the Homeowners against Panco didn't work for me. This week, Wayne's Doug stuff worked much better. The show needed Wayne to be put in his place. This is not an easy thing he is trying to do, and he's not going to be able to just bullshit his way out of every situation.

There was some great tension as the opposing attorneys continued to reference case after case, all of them going right over Wayne's head. I was wondering, how can they possibly get him out of this. And I was as surprised as everyone in that room when he just went to sleep. It was interesting how that move was deemed something of a cop-out by the rest of the family. What I really liked about it was that Hugh didn't buy into it for a second. His 48 hour deadline is the kind of thing I want to see. A little pressure for Wayne.

His solution this week was rather clever. You could make the argument that he sure got that guest lecture gig on awfully short notice, but I'm willing to let that one slide because I like how it all played out. Wayne got the answers that Doug needed, and did so in a way that didn't require him to know more than he should, or his foes to be idiots. It's also worth noting that Aubrey started asking about "Wayne." MorseMoose mentioned in the comments last week that he thinks Aubrey is on to Doug, and it sure looks that way now. I really liked the scene when Dahlia came to the office. "Wayne." "Dahlia." "Doug." "Cherien." "Aubrey."

As Wayne was struggling with all of that, there was a nice parallel with Dahlia as she had her own troubles with her new job. Not only were they both having trouble adapting, they both had instances of covertly revealing their true colors to someone. Dahlia's new job did set the stage for some good stuff. Her scenes with Isaac (Charlie Robinson, Night Court) were very good. More interesting though was how they effected Dahlia as she related Isaac's experience to what she and Wayne are going through. It's as if now that they set this ball in motion, nobody is willing to be the one that actually brings it to a stop. They all realize to some degree that it isn't going to work in the long run, but they are just too stubborn to cut and run.

Cael and DiDi picked up right where they left off last week with DiDi becoming more and more comfortable with the buffer life while Cael misses the old ways. It all led nicely to the payoff from last week's cliff-hanger where we found Ginny watching the Malloys. I have to say, that one caught me off guard. I fully expected Ginny to want a cut in return for not ratting them out to Dale. And when Wayne and Dahlia pulled Cael out of school and mentioned what it cost them, I was curious to hear the price. The price being DiDi's hand in marriage wasn't what I expected. I considered it, but given Wayne's reaction when Dale brought it up earlier in the series, I just didn't think it would happen. That was a nice bomb to drop at the end of the episode. Made all the more potent by the fact that Eric was finally over for dinner.

Of course, that wedding just can't happen. There is a line in the sand, and DiDi actually marrying Kenny is far to the 'not bloody likely' side of it. It should provide for some funny stuff over a couple episodes before the whole thing blows up and creates even more drama.

6 of 7 Overall, I'm really happy with how the show is progressing. Considering Wayne's guest lecture gambit, a nice turn by Charlie Robinson, and the slow ratcheting of the tension with the traveler family, I'm going to give this one a 6 out of 7.

And I was blown away when it was actually the fiance who came through the door and not Ginny! I also wonder what the shotgun was all about - maybe she was expecting trouble when she dropped him off? Poor DiDi! Next week's episode seems spectacular! But I missed Nina :(

Not that I actually like the use of the 7 point scale, but I have to say it's actually a pretty well established rating system for things like surveys and developmental screenings. However, I think it's crazy to use it on a entertainment site, as a 5 point or 10 point rating scale is much more customary and expected when speaking about entertainment.

Thanks Jon88. Ya know, I tried to find that one last night, but apparently I stopped looking too soon. I think the fact that I was searching with the incorrect spelling was working against me. It's fixed now.

As long as we're piling on, it's Cherien, not Shereen. Not to take anything away from the recap. Great work.

This show just keep getting better and better. I'm loving it.

But a 7 point scoring system?

I have to ask
WHY?

There's already established point systems. The thumbs up, the 5 star, and the 10 point. Why invent a completely arbitrary system when there are others already out there that people know and understand?

It's just stupid.
I know what 8 out of 10 means
or 4 stars out of 5
or even thumbs up
I'm sorry but I give your new rating system a 13 out 54 rating.

Thanks Kristin, you're right, it is Ginny. I've fixed that.

The character is Ginny, not Jenny.

That being said, I am disappointed that the price to pay is the "arranged marriage". I will be interested to see how it plays in future episodes.

I like the dynamic of the guest characters interacting with the regulars, you really feel for them.

I simply love this show and when Heroes comes back, my Mondays will finally be complete.

I think that I agree with what Amy has to say about Aubrey. We are exposed to this hard working (and brilliant no doubt) paralegal who is stuck in a rut of only having a "state" education. She will definately be the first to figure out the sleight of hand trick that Wayne is concocting, but that doesn't necessarily mean that she is going to blow his cover. If we can assume anything its that she WILL become an ally as things progress, if only for the fact of pulling one over on Hugh for the comments he has made about her being "just a paralegal" and having the background that she does. But lets not underestimate Hugh's intelligence either--I mean one has to have some sort of smarts in order to be worth 150 million dollars.

Bill, I'm still getting a handle on the seven point rating scale myself. Here's how I'm looking at it. 5 is a very good episode of a show. I'll go to 6 if the show adds something extra with guest stars or a big moment. I'm a sucker for good guest casting, so seeing Mac from Night Court, especially since it was such a well done appearance, along with the Kenny reveal, was enough to bump this one to 6.

7 is reserved for those truly great episodes, and for me, those will be few and far between. The first two that come to mind for me are "Hush" from Buffy The Vampire Slayer and "Home Games" from Going To California.

I would say 4 is an average episode. Nothing special, and you watch it because you are a fan of the show, but not one you would really recommend to people. 3 is an episode that misses the mark, whether through bad performances, hokey plotting, or any number of other bugaboos.

2 is just terrible. You may not have even finished watching the episode. And 1 is reserved for the truly spectacular crap.

That's where I'm at with it at this point anyway.

I really wish I had something more thoughtful and provocative to say other than I FREAKING LOVE THIS SHOW!!!

I loved how they're all eating pizza together with Eric, and sweet Sam says to Eric, "You picked a good night to come over." And Dahlia says, "Nooo ya didn't," knowing, of course DiDi's FIANCE was coming over.

I loved the whole classroom scene with the cookies.

I loved every scene with the dentist (and thank you for reminding us who that was - it was driving my family nuts). Charlie Robinson gave an incredible performance.

Loved how Wayne & Dahlia yanked Cael out of class with their very angry explanation of how his cat got run over!

I loved Aubrey - I think she has real potential to be an interesting character. I think she will definitely catch on to the scam, and maybe she'll be a buffer who crosses over a little bit into the Traveler World.

Ok, that's enough gushing for this week! What was Jenny doing with the shotgun anyway? I kinda missed that part.
