Cancel a show campaign

by Isabelle Carreau, posted Apr 12th 2007 10:02AM
Stop One ShowFor years, TV fans have been rallying to help save their favorite shows. Some tried online petitions, others sent tons and tons of snail mail to the networks, while some gathered the needed money to have "save ads" appear in key TV magazines.

One of the most popular "save our show" campaign on the Internet is probably Kristin's "Save One Show" at E! Online. For the past few years, Kristin has TV fans submit what show they would like to save. She writes a column about the shows that gathered the most votes in the hope to help save them.

The trend of trying to save a show is certainly not gone, but a new type of petition is making its way to the net: "Stop One Show!"Earlier this week, BuzzSugar.com has launched their "Stop One Show" campaign. Their aim is to let people know of one show their readers think should be canceled to make place for a quality series. The creator of that campaign has listed the scripted shows she enjoys less and is now asking her readers to vote for their list favorite in the "Which show would you stop?" poll.

I find her list of shows that should be cancelled a bit lacking. It also includes some shows I do not think deserves to be canceled even if I don't watch them. BuzzSugar's poll includes: Law & Order, War at Home, My Name Is Earl, American Dad, Ghost Whisperer, CSI: Miami, George Lopez, Medium, Prison Break and ER. So no The CW shows should be canceled? What about boring One Tree Hill? (I used to watch it but stopped around mid-season this year when it was clear nothing fresh would happen on that show.) How about Close to Home? Even though the show helps bring good ratings to CBS on Fridays, it is not what it used to be. Plus why put on that poll shows that we know are renewed for next season (ER, My Name Is Earl, and Prison Break)? Kristin's campaign does not focus on shows that have already been picked up. Telling networks to cancel shows they already picked up will do nothing.

Even though BuzzSugar's "Stop One Show" campaign will not get the same attention from the network the "Save One Show" campaign gets, it's interesting to see what show TV fans think should be canceled especially at a time where networks are preparing their 2007-2008 schedules.

What shows do you think should be on that "Stop One Show" campaign?

Lose the reality shows and this from someone who likes Project Runway but if you lose one you should lose all.

Game shows should be moved back to where they belong - daytime. Did NBC not learn anything from the ABC fiasco of Millionaire?

Deal or No Deal - 1 vs. 100 - Identity - American Idol - Extreme Makeover - Family Guy - Office

Better idea, get rid the executives at NBC, CW and FOX and never let them get another job in TV again.

I would cancel anything on CBS, War at Home, Til Death, Mind of Mencia, and According to Jim. Especially Mencia. I Hate Him.

I would give anything for Sanjaya to win and have Simon Cowell keep his word and quit. American Idol is an abomination. I can't stand karaoke.

I'm a gemstone lover. In my opinion, there's nothing more beautiful than a simple, perfectly cut translucent colored stone. Unfortunately, jewelers have a tendency to put these wonders of nature in atrocious settings. Everytime I watch the home shopping networks and see spectacular stones embedded in a ridiculously gaudy piece of jewelry, I yell "free the stones!"

There are two shows on the the air right now that have absolute gems of casts entrapped in poorly written, cliched enivroments. Everytime I attempt to watch them I wind up yelling "free the actors!"

The shows? The established Grey's Anatomy and newbie October Road.

I love Patrick Dempsey. Love Sandra Oh. Love Chandra Wilson. Love James Pickens, Jr. Hate, hate, hate Grey's Anatomy. I've tried to like this show. I can't. There is absolutely no substance to it. The dialogue makes me cringe. The medical "drama" is so lightweight it's a joke. OK, I know Grey's Anatomy is supposed to be soapy. I'd rather watch the daytime serials! This is a series whose success lies squarely on the backs of the marvelous actors. And they deserve better.

October Road is the kissin' cousin of Grey's Anatomy. Another wonderful cast holding up a badly written show. The dialogue is truly craptacular. I've seen some posts over on Television Without Pity where people are fast-forwarding though it to get to the scenes with Tom Berenger and Penny Johnson Jerald.

Unlike mega-hit Grey's, October Road can be disposed of. OR has been getting middling ratings so far, picking up a bit of the Grey's audience, and ABC is leaning towards a pickup for next season. So I plead with the viewers who are accidentally leaving on October Road after Grey's Anatomy is finished: turn it off!

These things are pointless. There will always be more people don't like a show, than people who do. How many viewers does American Idol get for example? Let's be optimistic and say it's 50 million. That's a HUGE success isn't it. But that means there are 250 million people that don't watch it. If everyone voted then it would be a prime target for cancellation with a 5:1 ratio against it continuing to be made.

Stick with a regular campaign and gather the number of people that want a show to remain on-air by all means. It's not going to make a difference to the networks though unless you see the number exceed several million. I wonder if there were enough people that could have kept Arrested Development alive. I doubt it.

Also please can According to Jim its not funny and for that same reason throw in American Dad, Til Death, and the CW monday line-up.

For overstaying its welcome anything with nanny in the title, The View, The Apprentice, Survivor, Wrestle Mania, and (We're going to be all put on criminal charges for saying this) American Idol.
