Jericho: A.K.A.

by Paul Goebel, posted Apr 12th 2007 7:09AM

Pamela Reed(S01E18) Beef Stew. That's what I call an episode like tonights. Plenty of great information to sink your teeth into. Let's get right to it.

Most of the episode was spent with Hawkins filling JackJake in on what happened. Amazingly, he had all the answers. Who dropped the bombs, why they did it, how he was involved. He revealed it all, much to Jake's shock and awe. I'm glad that we finally got some answers. Personally, I can never understand why people don't just ask, "What is going on here?" Cough, Lost, cough.

I loved the scenes with Alicia Coppola and the chicken. Clearly, she does her best acting with co stars who can't understand what she's saying. In all seriousness, I like the turn her character has taken and I find it totally believable. I'm looking forward to Stanley's return.

The chemistry between Pamela Reed and Gerald McRaney is always top-notch and I love seeing the two of them. I think their scenes in this episode were really a metaphor for men and women in general: when things get tough, a woman's place in the kitchen and a man's place is in a tree (as much as I love having a woman cook for me, I'm just joking here. Please no angry comments).

rating 6

My only problem with the episode would be Gail's visit to April's grave. I don't know the first thing about masonry or granite work but do any of them really have the time and resources to make a headstone so quickly? I welcome any rational explanation.

On a scale of 1 to 7, I would give this episode a 6.

"Hair. Tombstones. Hurley. C'mon get a grip."

Well excuse some of us for wanting well rounded and complete story telling. If it can be done in film it can be done in tv. (But then again some one did mention keeping it simple for the demographic.)

So finally we get some answers as to who nuked all the major U.S. cities...and who do the despicable terrorists turn out to be? Militia and religious fanatics? Pleeeeease! Why not just throw in the Boy Scouts and Homeschooling Moms to round things out? This show lost me as a viewer when it went dumb just like the rest. LOST is quickly becoming tedious and "24" now has us giving up Russian defensive nuclear technology to the Chinese to save Jack's girlfriend. I'm done.

I think Hawkins is telling the truth, but there is some stuff he left out. I agree with one poster who said that he needs someone to trust. I think he realized he's way over his head trying to keep the bomb out of the terrorists' hands...he needs Jake's help. Jake is the only one in town who has the experience and skills to help.

As for a timeline, one is being kept on the official Jericho website through CBS. I think you have to click on a link to "add information to Wikopedia." All the morse codes for the episodes are also listed. The morse code messages are pretty helpful on the mysteries. Too bad I don't know how to decipher it so I could get it before the episode. For instance, in the episode when Grey and Jimmy interrogate Hawkins and learn he's FBI, the morse code message was "Not FBI." (or something like that).

seriously--so much info and all you guys can talk about is hair, nails, and gravestones?

Personally, I thought this was one of the best episodes yet. I was hoping Hawkins would turn out to be one of the good guys, and unless what he said was a crock of lies (which is possible) it seems that hope is justified. Now we know a lot more about who did it, I'm curious to know more about the US situation and the world situation now.

And is that "Valente D.H.S." a good guy or a bad guy? I know DHS is Homeland Security, but was he there to try and debrief/recontact with Hawkins? Or kill him?

Regarding LOST:

The survivors have only been on the island for a couple of months or so in "their time". The characters, even had they not found all that Dharma food, wouldn't have had much time to lose a lot of weight. So taking into account the short period of time they've been stranded, plus the discovered eats there's no real mystery as to why some, like Hugo, have not lost weight.

Sorry, I know it's off-topic.

Forgot to add:

The people who nuked America: Logically, at this point in our country, it would probably be easier for Americans to pull off a terrorist act like this. And recall that the aforementioned Timothy McVeigh was a Desert Storm veteran.

That's not to say it isn't improbable that a foreign country could have also been involved in the nuclear attacks. Another country could have helped to finance the domestic terrorists -- the most likely would be unofficial rogues from Saudi Arabia or Syria, and officially from Iran. Maybe the series will delve into this if it returns for a second season (which I predict will deal with the aftermath: the start of the second American civil war).

Re: Hurley (the fat guy) on LOST. Not only has he not lost any weight, it appears that he (the actor playing him) has actually GAINED weight. He looked noticeably heavier in last night's episode. WTH. On the other hand, Desmond looks to be losing weight -- and he/the actor hasn't been on that show as long.

Re: April's funeral. I assumed it's been several days (perhaps a few weeks) since the funeral. The producers simply decided not to depict it.

Re: Hawkins. I think he finally admitted the truth to Jake, because he needed somebody to confide in and trust, especially after his former partner turned on him. To be honest, I doubt the producers are wanting to make the truth about Hawkins all that "complicated". They've been keeping the plot reveals and twists relatively simple to digest, which I think may have to do with the fact that Jericho skews toward an older demographic than either LOST or Heroes.

So Hawkins is CIA, who has just learned that his boss is probably the leader of the Timothy McVeighs. I predict by the end of the season, he will enlist the help of Jake, and perhaps others, to take down "The Old Man." This arc will likely be resolved this season.

Next episode, it looks like Jake and Hawkins learn that the residents of New Bern have been enslaved to make war munitions in what could be a build up for a second American civil war.

Docinaustin, you took the words right out of my mouth regarding the Hawkins' women’s hair! As a woman of color you can not tell me that in a town that's, like, 99% white that "Dixie Peach" and ethnic hair relaxers were readily available in that general store! Please! But I've noticed it's not just the Hawkins women. With the exception of Mimi who really looks like she's been through something since the day(s) before the bombs went off, all the women's hair looks pretty darn good. Perfectly curled, no one's roots are showing. This has been a nit-pick of mine for several episodes now. At this point people should be looking a little scruffier around the edges. Come on! I don't watch "Lost" but this reminds me of how people complained after the first season that the fat guy hadn't lost any weight a la Tom Hanks in "Castaway." It was/is a very good point *and* very distracting trying to suspend your belief in the story.

And I thought the same thing about the tomb stone. Even in the best of times there's usually a waiting time of several days if not a couple of weeks before it can be engraved, and properly placed - even if there are blank on laying around. Did several days pass between episodes in which there was a funeral and time to prepare the headstone? A time line would be nice with this show.

As for Hawkins, I’m not convinced we've gotten the true, real, complete story. Were his "flashbacks" we were being shown really what happen or images of the lies he was making up in his head for Jake?

"It's Jake in the first paragraph, not Jack, Jack is a character in 24, Stargate SG-1, Lost, Without a Trace, 30 Rock, Alias, and Bones."

And don't forget Farscape. ;-D

Pamela and Gerald portray the ultimate parents. They are just great people and great characters. If they were not in the Midwest, I think they'd almost be too perfect to be believeable.

I hadn't thought of the headstone thing. Nice catch!
