Oprah weighs in on Imusgate

by Elizabeth Chan, posted Apr 13th 2007 1:20PM
Don Imus' career on television is done, but television is not done with Don Imus.

Yesterday, the women of TV talk weighed in on the "Imusgate" fiasco.
On the heels of a recent interview with Matt Lauer on The Today Show, Al Sharpton decided yesterday to make an encore presentation of his opinions with Meredith Vieira. This visit was more targeted at addressing the racist/chauvinist double standards in the music industry. Hmm, no wonder Lauer didn't score this interview -- it was worthless. I'm scratching my head. Where is the logical nexus between Don Imus and rappers?

In a somewhat predictable move, Oprah Winfrey sat down with the Rutgers woman's basketball team and discussed the situation in grand Oprah style.

The interview brought up an incredibly valuable point. These women had worked hard to make a great achievement and will never be able to fully enjoy it. Their accomplishments have been overshadowed by Don Imus' idiocy.

These woman are owed more than an apology; they are owed a true moment of celebration.

It wasn't racist......sexist ok maybe....but oh well.....if the shoe doesn't fit why wear it...what happened to back when.....something was said and you said what a jerk and moved on.....talked about it a couple of days ....and moved on to the next dead horse.....but no not now days......when I have rasied my children and someone has something I have ask is the comment true? if not why are you letting someone rain on your parade....never let someone else live in your mind rent free...as long as we continue to let others people's thoughts of us rule our lives we will never rule our own...I didn't watch IMUS......but as a point....if someone were to pick up his show I would......the only thing he did was bring a team and college to the front page when they were stuck in the back.......I say this all became a big deal when these girls didn't get enough media......so sad.......hey look you made first page.....congrats !

I TRIED TV A FEW TIMES…SO FAR I THINK ROSIE IS THE ONLY MORALISTICALLY SANE AND SENSIBLE VOICE BEFORE NOON AFTER WHICH ELLEN MAKES LIFE’S REALITY SEEM SILLY ENOUGH SO AS NOT TO GET ALL STRESSED OUT ABOUT THE REALITY OF TV. SO I SAY…
YOU GO GIRLZ!! ALL LOVERS OF LESBIAN’S UNITE!!
IF TV WERE REAL…EVEN SLIGHTLY…OPRAH WOULD “COME OUT” AND TRUTHFULLY TELL THE MASSES THAT SHE IS “REALLY” MUCH MORE INTO GAIL’S “BUSH” AND GET REAL WITH ROSIE..GIVE HER A HELPING HAND, A LITTLE SUPPORT,INVITE HILLARY TOO AND STAND BY HER SIDE POLITICALLY TO DISCLOSE THE HORRORS AND TRUTHS ABOUT GEORGE W.BUSH.

IF SHE’S NOT READY FOR THAT REALITY OR THINKS THE TRUTH ABOUT HER BEING A “MEGA-RICH, SELF ABSORBED, BLACK LESBIAN” WOULD BE TOO MUCH REALITY ALL AT ONCE? SHE WOULD ALSO HAVE TO ADMIT HER OBVIOUS TIES TO THE WHITE HOUSE AND HER ROLL IN CONTROLLING THE MINDSET OF THE MASSES,TO BELIEVE IN THE POWER AND FEAR LOOSING THE POWER…
HOW TIMLY TOO THAT SHE’S CONVINVED THE “I ONLY READ WHATEVER OPRAH TELLS ME TOO” IT’S ALL EASY STREET IF THEY KNOW THE “SECRET” ….THAT’LL KEEP THE MORAL UP AND THE ATTENTION SHIFTED. HER JOB IS TO KEEP THEM FOCUSED ON THAT VERY IMPORTANT YET EVER ELUSIVE AND UNATTAINABLE AMERICAN DREAM. DESIRES THAT ARE CONSUMED IN GREED AND MATERIALISM and STAR STATIS CELEBRITY FLUFF… DIVERTING THE ISSUES OF WAR AND POVERTY AND REALITY!

FORGET REALITY…WHAT?
THAT 9/11 REALLY HAPPENED HERE IN THE HOMELAND… THOSE TERRORISTS AND THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE WAR…???
THAT’S NOT POSITIVE THOUGHTS….NO SECRETS THERE (YEAH RIGHT!)…NONE THEY WOULD BELIEVE…!

SHE WOULD HAVE TO TELL THE WHOLE TRUTH..
LIKE ROSIE…REALITY ABOUT LESBIAN LOVE’ LIFE’ LIVING’…AND STANDING UP FOR THE TRUTH!

BE IT!” “OWN IT!” I DO AND YOU CAN TOO!

ONE MIND,ONE COUNTRY AND OPRAH!
AT LEAST SO IT APPEARS TO SOME…?
OPRAH NEEDS TO GET OFF HER ” AMERICAN’S NOW READ…BUT ONLY WHAT I TELL THEM TO” CAMPAIGN! IT’S OLD!
HERE’S A NEW IDEA…
WHY NOT FEED THE HUNGRY OF THE WORLD? EITHER THAT OR HAVE YOUR NAME REMOVED FROM THE LIST OF THE “WORLD’S TOP 5 WEALTHIEST” WHO COULD STOP WORLD HUNGER!!!
I WOULD RATHER LOOK FOR WHAT’S REAL ON “MY SPACE”. THERE ARE BETTER ODDS FOR FINDING SOME TRUE REALITY!
IMPORTANT THOUGHT PROVOKING CONTENT. COMPASSIONATE SELF THINKERS THAT STILL EXIST. WRITTEN WORDS OF HOPE AND PASSION WITHOUT JUDGEMENT FROM TRULY CREATIVE OPEN MINDS. AS OPPOSED TO WATCHING THE CONTROLED AND SELF-SUBSCRIBED SINGLE-OPINIONATED OF MOST “REAL REALITY TELEVISION!

ac, you beat me to it. The Rutgers team never asked for Imus to be fired, and they're definitely showing lots of class in this mess. And as has been said earlier, Oprah cares less about their achievements than their "victimhood."

Oprah could have had both the Tennessee and Rutgers teams on her show to celebrate their title game, and to talk to the #1 and #3 winningest coaches in the sport. But apparently that's not what she's about here.

The comment made by RAL makes the most sense out of most of the others. I will say that out of all of the people that are outraged by what Imus said the only ones that actually are showing class are the Rutgers players themselves. They never intended for Imus to be fired they just wanted a face to face apology. It was Sharpton who wanted blood, so dont blame the team for that.

Wanna get pissed off because he called them "ho's"? Go for it.

I don't see how "nappy-headed" is racist. Granted, I've only heard the phrase when someone was talking about a black woman's hair, but, I don't see it as racist. Ooooh. He insulted their hair. He's a meanie. That doesn't make him a racist.

Has anyone ever heard "sticks and stones ..."? Give me a break already! Grow up! I'm so sick of it. Did the man deserve to lose his job? NO! If you're white and you say anything that could be offensive you are a racist but if you are of any other race you can say whatever you want ... You can always pull out the "freedom of speach" card.

So you've heard what Howard has been saying about this whole thing? You've heard the stories about Imus using the N word long ago in the offices at WNBC? It's no secret that this guy is a racist. Howard even pointed out he always wears his "n-word hating hat" all the time lol.

Agreed Mike. Thank God. It's a moot point now anyway because Howard is on satellite. I'm thinking we'll see Imus there as well soon enough.

lol. ok. let me put this simply for you.

Stern isn't a racist. I get that and even said as much before. I have listened to him since he started, and am a fan of his.

That said, if Stern made those comments, or any other comments of similar attitude, he wouldn't get fired. He wouldn't be ostracized. Nothing would happen to him. Because he holds more power.

Yes, Imus isn't funny. Yes Stern is better. Yada yada yada. But Stern is also a lot more powerful than Imus is. That's my point.
