Martina McBride mentors Top 7 Idol contestants during country week

Martina McBrideThis week, Martina McBride will be coaching the remaining seven Idol finalists with their country music selections. McBride, considered the "Celine Dion of country music," will also perform her Top-5 single "Anyway" during Wednesday's live results show (April 18) on FOX.

Oh boy, this is going to be a rough week for me. I'm not much of a country music fan, so the songs aren't going to be familiar (unless they all perform Shania Twain or Faith Hill). The contestants already butchered Latin-themed music last week, under the guidance of Jennifer Lopez. But, I have a feeling that this week could be worse.

Without a Josh Gracin, Carrie Underwood, or Kellie Pickler, which one of our seven contestants will stand out during this year's country week? Will our divas step out of their comfort zones (and out of the 1970s) or will they be Mandisa-ed out of the competition? Can Blake and Chris keep it contemporary while finding their inner cowboys? And what the heck will Sanjaya wear?

Here's my advice to the finalists -- stay away from Dixie Chicks songs (especially politically-divisive songs) and listen to what Martina has to say. That means you -- LaKisha.

I'm a country music fan and have given this some thought. I would like to hear Melinda sing 'Backseat of a Greyhound Bus' by Sara Evans. I think Lakisha should reach back in the closet and pull out some OLD country; 'Delta Dawn' perhaps. As for Tim McGraw songs; I would LOVE to hear Blake sing 'How Bad Do You Want It'. I'd like to hear Jordin rock out 'Lot Of Leavin' Left To Do'. I'd like to hear Phil sing There Will Come A Day. I'd LOVE to hear Chris break out and sing 'My Kind of Girl'. As for Sanjaya - well, maybe 'Life Ain't Always Beautiful'. Or as a big ole laugh, he could come out and sing 'I Feel Like A Woman'! HA HA HA But contestants, from a viewer of Idol from the start; for the love of God and all that is Holy, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT SING 'How Do I Live'. It's done and been put to rest!

I so wanted to see Taylor Hicks sing "Man of Constant Sorrow" last year during Country Week. (It was the song George Clooney lip synched to in "O Brother, Where art Thou?") Why can't AI have a request night and let the audience pick!

LaKisha will do allright if she picks one of the strong, belting ballads that McBride or Hill have done in the past. Mindydoo might have a problem, though.

I think Blake is the only one that will have the guts to do something outrageous and unexpected. I hope I am right!!

My dearest hope is that Phil doesn't slaughter a Johnny Cash song, but I fear he might.

They should make the contestants choose song's from Martina's "Timeless" CD...genuine old country songs. Faith Hil has never been and never will be country.

I can see Blake doing a Save the Horse Ride a Cowboy "THING" He is the most versatile of the singers. I agree that Jordan will do well with it also. Can you amagine Phil with a Tim McGraw song like Real Man. HA! It ought to be fun to see them sweat.
Sanjaya Should be the one to do the Faith Hill stuff.

Jordin will be the only girl able to pull off a country song. The rest of the "Divas" won't be able to handle it.
