Simon says Idol finalists suffer from 'Chris Daughtry-itis'

Chris DaughtryWhat exactly is 'Chris Daughtry-itis?' Does it involve a fever and a rash? Does it cause baldness? And most importantly, is it curable?

Simon Cowell complained in this week's Entertainment Weekly that the current batch of finalists just don't want to win badly enough. And this laid-back attitude is effecting their "A Game," or creating a lack thereof.

Simon said, "I think that we suffer from Jennifer Hudson- and Chris Daughtry-itis, which is people who didn't win getting great careers and now a lot of the contestants believing it absolutely doesn't matter."

Finalist Chris Richardson confirmed this sentiment, telling EW, ''You don't have to win it . . . To me I've already won, being in the top 10 and going on tour [this summer]."

Earlier this year, I ran a post that asked "Are the Idol losers the real winners?" After five seasons, it has become clear that you don't have to win Idol to take advantage of the enormous exposure (as in 30 million fans a week) it brings to you. Besides Hudson and Daughtry, Clay Aiken, Kellie Pickler, Tamyra Gray, Josh Gracin and more are all enjoying successful careers -- despite losing Idol.

And the finalists themselves have come to realize that winning might not be the best thing for their careers. While the winner is guaranteed a recording contract with 19 Management, past finalists have complained that the company then owns the artist, stipulating what and how they must record, and taking an enormous percentage for themselves.

Winning the grand prize, then, isn't all it's cracked up to be. For artists hoping to maintain some artistic control, it's probably better to play Idol's game up to a certain point, and then use that exposure to launch their careers independently.

Sorry, Simon, but these kids are more career-savvy than you think. They know what they want and they know how to get it. They realize that a mild case of "Daughtry-itis" is just what they need to jump-start their careers.

Grannie Annie obviously has nothing better to do than to bash Talent. CHRIS DAUGHTRY ROCKS. I am a mother of a 10 year old, and how I spend MY HARD EARNED MONEY is nobody's business but my own.. If MY SON wants something then HE DOES HIS CHORES SAVES HIS HARD EARNED MONEY FOR IT and if he is a little short YES I WILL MAKE UP THE DIFFERENCE. Hey grannie why don't you listen to Chris' music, not just the instrumentals, but the lyrics, you should also listen to NICKELBACKS song "If everyone cared." You have a lot of critisism and animosity, You need to find a hobby (and internet browsing doesn't count) Like you I am ALSO entitled to MY opinion, and YOU have NO right to judge others on how they choose to raise there children. LAST time I checked THIS WAS AMERICA "Land of the FREE" as you have your opinion, many others have an opinion as well so get over yourself, My child is an honor student, is VERY ACTIVE in sports and church activities and plays the piano, guitar and drums, yes he does LISTEN TO ROCK MUSIC. We have a great deal of respect for people that want to fulfill there dreams, and AI gives ALOT of hope for ALOT of people. The music industry as well as Life alone is diffucult, So who are you to judge or bash people for wanting to fulfill there dreams I have read some of your other blogs, As the bible states "james 5:12 "THERE IS ONE LAWGIVER, WHO IS ABLE TO SAVE AND TO DESTROY: WHO ART THOU THAT JUDGETH ANOTHER? 5:11 ALSO STATES "NOT TO JUDGE THE LAW, THOU ART NOT A DOER OF THE LAW, BUT A JUDGE." If your such a christian YOU would KNOW THAT.

Chris Daughtry and Taylor Hicks are two Very talented guys who are willing to go the distance with hard work to earn their stripes and almighty dollars. They are both family oriented and good clean American citizens! My hat's off to both of them. They will still be going long after the sun goes down just to make their fans happy and to prove they deserve and appreciate every fan and every chance that has been given to them. I hope they both laugh all the way to the bank and as a matter of fact,,, I hope they break the bank!! There is not an egotistical
bone in eithers body. My Love To Them Both!! judy

"The beat box thing can only go so far."

ahHAha!!

"Sanjaya is smart, he has performed before and watch, he'll go into acting, or comedy...He is the most talented because he is using AI to get where he is going. Just wait, he'll be on a commercial on TV...and then he'll go on...He is also the most interesting."

AHA ah Ha HAAA...haHAhahaaaHA.!!! You're too funny. Thanks, KarenSundae. I needed a good laugh.

Kelly and Carrie are great and deserve the success they're enjoying but Chris is by far the best and most original. Musicians who would never be caught dead on Idol can't help but respect him. The album sales speak for themselves. He's had what it takes since the very beginning - no need for any tweaking from AI. We've never seen any incredible transformation because he's never needed it. He's known who he is and what he wants from the start and people love it.

Hey Tony, thanks for educating Alan. This "coming back to our roots" is something we do every 20 yrs. If we did anything else it wouldn't sound like music anymore. Daughtry's talent is so unique and refreshing that everyone in the music industry want's to influence his music. Their flavor will show through, like Slash and Rob Thomas. In the end though, his ability to write, arrange, absolutely blow out the music, and seek influence from the right people is why Chris will be here for a long, long time. Long after Alan, Grannie, and the rest of the Back Street Brat Patrol are finished singing Cumbaya, (or is that Sanjaya?) around the campfire. This CD is the best since Match Box 20s 1st. Every song is hit material w/out being wimpy.

Don't you guys see it. This is not a singing competition, as Simon said glaringly mean things to Jennifer Hudson, and Paula and Simon have all commented on how they look, and Haley lasted because Simon liked how she looked.
Just see that this show is going down the drain. We had to have Sanjaya, because no one is truly interesting. The beat box thing can only go so far.
Sanjaya is smart, he has performed before and watch, he'll go into acting, or comedy. He is not a William Hung to be made fun of. Sanjaya actually got into the top 12, because the judges put him there for entertainment purposes. He is the most talented because he is using AI to get where he is going. Just wait, he'll be on a commercial on TV...and then he'll go on. He is only 17. He is also the most interesting.
And have you ever noticed that with women, Rock will never win, they are looking for Divas that can really shriek. No one else on this year's show is interesting enough to be an American Idol. Like LaToya London said last year, you don't have to win to become a major success........a la Daughtry.

In reference to #17. I am 49 and I grew up on Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Led Zep, and Alice Cooper just to name a few. I saw Chris in December in concert and he was awesome. His voice is strong and he can carry a note. Just because you don't like his style of music does not mean he can't sing. But then, you probably didn't like the Beatles either.

Grannie Annie better go get her hearing aid rechecked. She states that all Daughtry does is make noise. I don't know what she's been listening to, but she better get out of Hicksville and get out in the real world more often. Chris rocks and it's proven by the millions of people who have purchased his debut CD. As for Melinda DooLittle winning this year; she's an okay singer, but she does not have the Star quality to be an American Idol. She looks about 30 years older than she's claiming to be.
