The Riches: Reckless Gardening

by Joel Keller, posted Apr 17th 2007 12:32AM
Shannon Woodward of The Riches(S01E06) Last week, we found out two things about the Malloys and their life as the Riches: 1) Wayne is going to have to do more than BS if he's going to survive as a Panco lawyer, and 2) life as a buffer is more trouble than anyone expected it to be. This week, we see the noose starting to tighten around the Malloys, as more and more pieces of the Traveller life are seeping in to their Eden Falls existence. And, unfortunately for Di Di, those pieces are flying around and smacking her square in the face.

Di Di is certainly becoming the most level-headed of the family, isn't she? At first, I thought it would be Cael, because I thought he had the smarts to protect his family from getting caught. But, of course, a girl got in the way. But it seems pretty unfair that because Cael managed to get tailed by Ginny that Di Di has to pay for it by being "engaged" to Ken the dipweed.

I mean, even if Travellers haven't done a lot of book learning, most of them have the requisite street smarts to be able to scam and scheme their way through life. Ken can't even staple papers together. The only thing he's good at is stealing, and he's still way too obvious when he does that. But Di Di, as much as she wants Ken out of her life, knew that if he was caught with the pot Cael's buddies planted on him, he'd be way too stupid to keep his mouth shut. He already spent the entire day at Panco saying "Wayne" and "Mr. Malloy" instead of "Doug" and "Mr. Rich." Aubrey's already suspicious; I'm sure Ken's day of "aprenticin'" hasn't helped.

Was it strange to you that Wayne was a surprisingly competent lawyer this week? It's almost as if he's getting the hang of the job (with Aubrey's help, of course). But it did seem like he not only knew the facts and law behind the alligator attack case, but had the wherewithal to dig up just enough dirt on the victim, Hartley Underwood -- nicely played by another FX star, Katlin Olson from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia -- to get her and her lawyer to back off. Panetta's threats probably helped, and Wayne's Traveller experience can help him in some aspects of lawyering, but knowing about how to lie can only get even the best lawyers so far.

Gregg Henry is pretty adept at playing an asshole, there's no doubt about that. Hugh Panetta is about as slimy as it gets, and it felt good to see Dahlia dig her fingernails into his scrotum. But only he can use her desire to get clean against her. It's amazing how powerful blackmail is. Just ask Di Di. But somewhere within that assholish personality is a sympathetic figure. Heck, he was able to get Wayne to admit that his mother left him. I'm guessing she was the non-Traveller side of Wayne's family, but I guess we'll find out more about that soon.

Let's talk about Dale for a second. Wow. Sociopath doesn't even begin to describe him. The man will literally kill his own father just to get a chance to lead the clan. I don't think we knew until now that his father wanted to have Wayne lead the family after he died, and I wonder if anyone informed him that Wayne stole all his money and skipped out. But even Ken can see that Dale is pure molten evil, and unfit to lead the clan. Heck, even Dale probably realized it, which is why he took his father out for that "walk."

Somehow, thanks to Dahlia, Di Di didn't get a permanent record. It was good to see both Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver play to their strengths this week: a drunk Wayne is a funny Wayne, especially when he's trying to be a police sketch artist or when he locks Ken in the trunk, and we need to see Dahlia sing more often, so we can hear Driver's wonderful voice.

rating 5It was a pretty entertaining episode. I'll give it a 5 on our 1 to 7 scale, since I think it should have had a little more tension, and Wayne's suddenly competent lawyering didn't sit right with me. But it's undeniable that this show has smart writing and an emotional underpinning that makes all of the Malloy's shenanigans more palatable. Next week, the Malloys go back to the clan to pay their respects to Dahlia's uncle. Expect the action to pick up from here on out.

Bob (#10): The character to root for is Di Di. She's just trying to play the hand she's been dealt, and keep her family together. Even with Ken, she's obviously horrified at the idea of having to marry this guy, but you can also tell that she feels sorry for him.

About the Doug knowing too much about his Proffession...
Am i the only one who saw that Aubrey whispered to Doug about the Charges that she was Facing....the whole robbery thing....it was Aubrey who told doug about it...he didnt figure it out all on his own.
And yes the old man who just died saw doug taking the money...but he decided not to ring the bell
So he knew that doug took the money
Well just making some observations otherwise you are doin aa great job Mr. Joel Keller!!!!!

There was so much to love in this episode! Dahlia's crazy-bitch-ball-grabbing was priceless, but what I really loved was the part right after she made it clear to Hugh that she wouldn' be giving him a bj, he told her she could file stuff and make some calls for him, and she whines, "Well I don't wanna do that either!"

Wayne drunk and bumping into walls at the police station was priceless, as was his drunken sketch of Ken (it really did look like a stick figure version of him!), and every time Wayne glared at Ken was comedic genious! Wayne's disgust at the alligator attack pictures also, for some reason, really cracked me up.

I think my favorite scene of the episode was after Dahlia had kept her cool at the police station and sprung DiDi, rounded up her drunk husband, and then she totally lost it outside the police station, saying she can't do this anymore. That was so incredibly real to me.

It's just amazing to me how they can go from the humor of a drunk Wayne as an accidental police sketch artist to Dahlia coming unglued to the horror of Dale killing his father in such a gut-wrenching scene. I cannot wait to see what happens next week!

I hope Dale dies. Im know its a TV show but that guy makes Hannibel Lector look like Mr. Rodgers.

Next week is the "weddin" so the Didi getting married plot will be answered then and since no one would want to marry that retard it will end in her favor.

I must admit that although I have watched every episode, I am just not as sure of this show as I was with Nip/Tuck or Rescue Me. The problem is that who is the sympathetic character? I can't even find one in the weekly walk on characters...

Aubrey could be sympathetic, but she will turn out to be probably the most wicked of all.

I don't care about this family...If they were busted tomorrow, I would not react. The people who died were butts. The country Club Group and people at Panco...unappealing as human beings.

So, who am I cheering for, the drug addict trying to clean up her act, but will probably fail. The grifter trying to steal a new life for his children (a future burgler and counterfeiter, a future Internet fraud Entrepeneur and a future Moll).

This show will "Jump The Shark" soon. I'm going to give it one more week, but if the show finishes this week to the same empty feeling it has provided so far, I'm going to have to say "Goodbye to the Rich's.

I loved this episode from start to finish. I felt so bad for Didi, having to put up with Ken, the poor girl. But like her dad said, he's gonna fix it and figure out a way to get them out of it..or maybe she will.

The scene where Dhalia had Hugh by the balls..priceless XD I laughed til I cried. You can really understand why Minnie Driver loves to play her so much, it must be fun as hell. Hugh reminds me of J.R. on Dallas, just totally full of it, selfish and deep down, insecure. A character like that can bring a lot of entertainment to the show.

The Dale parts were just..unbelievably scary to me. He's worse than a sociopath; he's past that. He's a devil. A serious devil. I hope he gets what's coming to him in the next episode. That was bloody cold what he did to his father. I could not imagine that at all happening. I could never forsee that. I hope Wayne finds out about it and kicks his butt.

As far as the next episode...anything that's released this week of it as far as commercials or clips, very anxious to see. It is going to be MAD intense. This is the episode I think where it'll all go down. Pure crazy.

The father saw Wayne steal the money and didn't raise the alarm. So the "revelation" that he wanted Wayne to take over the clan wasn't a surprise at all.

Aubrey soooo knows something's up with Doug. It seems she's always in the background when someone calls him by his real name and she's got this inquisitive look on her face.

I thought it was hilarious how Ken (who reminds me of a young Steve Buscemi) keeps calling him Dan. And then his whole confusion when Di Di called him her uncle in the cafeteria was priceless.

I love this show but I am dreading the day when it all comes crashing down. Like Dalhia said on the show, when they get caught - and they *will* get caught - it's going to be really bad.
