Doctor Who: Gridlock

by Martin Conaghan, posted Apr 18th 2007 10:41AM
Cats in Space(S03E03) It's still early stages in the new series of Doctor Who, so it's understandable when the writers re-visit old story arcs, and introduce new viewers to old themes.

It was like that this week, and whilst it wasn't a high-ranking episode in terms of story, it was still a good bit of fun.

And, as with previous weeks in the recent series, when Martha learned something new about the enigmatic time-traveller, so did we.

The most fascinating aspect of these recent episodes has had nothing to do with the plot, but the development of the Doctor's relationship with Martha, and the implications it could have on the future.

In these early encounters, the Doctor merely appears to be showing off to Martha, demonstrating his ability to take her anywhere he chooses to fulfill her sense of wonder at the marvels of travelling in time and space.

This week, they jetted forward to New-New York, last seen in New Earth from the previous season. However, the city had been transformed into a lower-level hell of flight-powered vehicles caught in a perpetual traffic jam, and when Martha was carjacked in order for two passengers to enter the so-called 'fast lane', the Doctor found himself in a race against time to rescue her.

Key to this episode was The Face of Boe, and enigmatic giant head in a jar who has made appearances in previous episodes, with the promise of a secret to be revealed.

It transpired that a virus had consumed the city many years before, and the Face of Boe had helped initiate a lock-down which protected as many of the citizens as possible in a make-believe underworld traffic jam, where they would drive for an eternity in the hope of reaching the real city.

Having already lied to Martha about his home planet and his people still existing, the Doctor found himself with the much bigger task of not only rescuing his new assistant from almost certain death, but liberating the people of a lost city -- with the help of the Face.

And before the Face died giving his last to free the people, he told the Doctor that he was not alone in the5 universe...

Next week's episode promised the return of the Daleks (entitled Daleks in Manhattan), with a sneaky line from the Doctor to the effect of: "I lose everything, and they continue to survive."

On a scale of 1 to 7 (worst to best), I'll give this episode a 5.

Decent story, would be nice if we could go one week without a homosexual connotation being shoe horned into the show.

I found 'Gridlock' to be a sweet, warm, imaginative, moving episode -- a bunch of lovely little character stories wrapped up in a big (if not necessarily solid) sci-fi concept inspired by 2000 A.D. (the comic, not the year). I don't really understand how anyone could find it boring... but your mileage may vary.

With regard to the Daleks... I don't think there's a problem with them being trotted out once per series (perhaps even twice) if they're used imaginatively. At least RTD et al seem determined to take them in new and different directions.

Sorry, Dan, but it was 1.2 and 2.1, then 3.3 - not 1.1 and 2.2...

I have to agree, until we see it, there is only speculation that the Master is returning. It's quite likely, but still only speculation. That's part of the fun!

Did anyone else notice the coincidence of the numbering of the episodes with the appearances of The Face of Boe?

He was in series 1 episode 1, series 2 episode 2, and series 3 episode 3.

To be fair, you're right, although they were at the forefront of the Race Row a few months back....wait, i think I just proved your point....moving on then. lol

It would be great if there was a twist like you mention, and knowing RTD, theres room for your idea to come true.

well Mike, like I said its all speculation until we get actual confirmation.

trusting the Sun is like trusting IMDB for casting information. Simm's non-confirmation/denial does lead me to think it will happen thus my stating its a safe bet. But until the beeb or RTD comes out and says something, I don't buy it 100%. Honestly, I think we are being thrown a foiler. Lay on this whole "Mister Saxon" bit, cast Simm as Saxon and then poof...the master is someone else. But then this is the BBC we are talking about, they can't keep their yaps shut about anything in Doctor Who.

I know its the Sun but they've been reporting John Simm plays the latest incarnation of the Master. The Telegraph and Scotsman have all run similar stories. And not only that but Simm hasn't denied it...

It is obvious Captain Jack will return what with the end of Torchwood and all. Where exactly have you seen confirmation of the Master actually returning? Last I heard it was still all speculation (albeit more than likely true, but speculation nonetheless)

Akbar, SPOILERS AHEAD

Actually, it is confirmed that the master will return...and obviously, so will Captain Jack. The end of this series should prove to be above spectacular!

Larry, while there is good money saying the Master is going to return, until we see it happen it is just speculation. I doubt that it would be Rani at all.
There are other possible speculations about Boe's final words:

-Other random Time Lord's could be out there
-Captain Jack may actually be part Gallifreyan
