Idol controversy: Did Simon roll his eyes at V-Tech tragedy last night? - VIDEO

Simon rolls his eyes.I went to sleep last night after posting my Idol recap, and woke up to find many commenters upset about Simon. Apparently, many feel Simon showed disrespect for the Virginia Tech tragedy by rolling his eyes in disgust after Idol finalist Chris Richardson gave a heartfelt shout-out to Virginia Tech.

So what happened exactly? And how did I miss this? Actually, I didn't. It just didn't register with me as anything significant at the time. In fact, I merely assumed that Simon was blowing off Chris Richardson's defensive remark about his "nasally" singing being an artistic choice. I also assumed that people were just looking for controversy this morning, and making a "mountain out of a molehill."

But then I went back and re-watched the exchange. You can do the same, since some industrious soul has already posted it on YouTube. Just act fast before the clip is pulled. The clip is embedded after the jump.

And I realized I was wrong. In my memory, Simon reacted directly after Chris defended nasal singing. As you can see from the video, that's not what happened. Simon was clearly caught rolling his eyes immediately after Chris mentioned V-Tech. Since this is LIVE TV, there wasn't any fancy editing. This is the order in which things unfolded. And in light of this dark tragedy, I can see now why so many people were offended.

Over on his blog, The Star-Ledger's Alan Sepinwall had a different immediate reaction after viewing the exchange. Last night, he wrote, "Given his age and the fact that he's from Virginia, I believe his comments about the Virginia Tech massacre were sincere, but they came dangerously close to seeming like a contestant trying to save his own hide by hitching his fate to a national tragedy. (The expression on Simon's face suggests he feels that's exactly what Chris was doing, though he later makes his own Va Tech comments at the end of the show.)"

Is this why Simon rolled his eyes? Did Chris mention the V-Tech tragedy out of sympathetic concern? Or was it a calculated move on his part in the shameless attempt to minimize the negative critique and place him in a more positive light? And I have to ask -- have we really become so cynical that we doubt the sincerity of everything we see on Idol?

Personally, I'd like to give both Chris and Simon the benefit of the doubt. I believe Chris was sincere. And I don't actually believe Simon meant to roll his eyes at the mention of this tragedy. Nobody is that callous. I truly believe he was reacting to Chris' earlier statement about nasal intention. And I also believe that this is what happens on Live TV. Sometimes people are "caught with their pants down." When 28 million people are scrutinizing your every move, you'd better hope you don't make one false move. After all, one simple eyeroll is open to half a dozen interpretations.

I do have to agree, though, that Simon's own heartfelt mention of the tragedy later in the night did appear to be a public apology for the earlier disrespectful reaction. The remark clearly came out of nowhere, stuck in the middle of Blake's critique. For whatever Simon's intention with the eyeroll, I do think the producers realized it made Simon look cold and insensitive. And I agree that somebody asked Simon to speak out, on behalf of the judges, about the Virginia Tech tragedy in an attempt to put a positive spin on the events that transpired.

Was it enough? Does Simon need to make a public statement and apologize for his actions? Or can we let him off the hook for this and agree that sometimes these things happen? Tell me what you think. I know you're dying to join the debate.

(EDITED TO ADD: SIMON COWELL MADE A STATEMENT AND ADDRESSED THE APPARENT EYEROLLING MISUNDERSTANDING).

I was looking right at the tube and when the big hoopla happened I didn't even notice it. All I know is that Simon and Paula were talking at the same time Chris and Ryan were talking. I did see Simone's apology and I don't agree with the writer who said it was "half-ass." It sounded 100% genuine to me. Simon can be abrasive but I can't even begin to imagine any of the Idol judges (or anyone at all!) showing disdain when a tragedy is mentioned. I think all three of them are class all the way. Another subject real quick: why do the judges and contestments make snide (or just amusing) remarks about Ryan being a homosexual? They talk about him like they'd tell a dirty joke. If the man is a homosexual, he needs to admit it or deny it. But guessing about his sexual preferences has no place in this top-rated show. It makes everyone look childish and petty, especially Ryan who always responds to the comments, sometimes just with a goofy giggle. And, of course, no one really gives a rip one way or the other anyway. My advice to everyone is just to shut up about Ryan and concentrate on the performances.

What was it a few weeks ago?? Paula a LUSH! This week Simon being disrespectful! I can only imagine what kind of SLANDER Randy gets. He next. This should have been on the soap opera channel. Too much bull going on with IDOL this year, and thats not to mention all the scandals about some of the contestants.

Simon has the most honesty and integrity of all the judges...says what most of us are thinking.....and the cameras unfortunaltely focused in on him making it seem he was insensitive to Chris's remarks. Simon was clearly upset about the "nasally singing being purposeful" (yeah, right)...then to offset it he threw in his remark about he shooting tragedy. That is what Simon rolled his eyes about and the fact that Chris clearly used it as a sympathy ploy....disgusting. I do hope that there was a part of him who sincerely meant it and I also believe that Simon's comments later were not forced and his later abology was honesy and heartfelt. I'm sick of people picking on Simon (the most honest judge) and many of us watched the show to get our minds off of the tragedy.....if we wanted to hear or read more about it we could have watched CNN, MSNBC, Fox....etc.......Lighten up America....yes it was a terrible tragedy but should not have been used as a ploy by Chris to get sympathy/votes/ or to say he purposely sings nasally. I'm glad Sanjaya finally left but Chris is my next choice.

My daughter and I were at the live taping of AI on Tuesday and it was quite clear to me in the studio that Simon rolled his eyes at the timing of Chris's comment about the tradgedy in Virginia. He was not just talking with Paula, yada yada. He thought Chris was just trying to get more votes by being sympathetic on air. Tell the truth Simon!! I thought Chris could of let his sympathy be shown at a different time also.
on a different note, glad and sad sayjaya is gone, felt sorry for the boy crying, seems like a nice BOY and ya know he is a boy only 17. so kudos to you for sticking it out and giving it all ya had on that stage. just never thought it was fair to the ones that really had singing talent to get the boot before some that didn't. BUT it is America's choice. Have a great day all!!! try to get to a live taping, WAY different than wathching it on TV.

I have nothing but the ut-most sympathy for those effected by the virgina tech-tragedy. And I don't beleive simon cowell to be malicious in this small action at all. He probably rolled his eyes because he knew someone was going to mention it and he was waiting for it all night. But let me just say this...Its bad enough that you are being punished for every little thing you say in this country, misinterpreted or not.... Now I guess we have to watch our facial expressions too. Freedom of speech is going down the drain here...

Simon is generally right on with comments on performances, however, Chris was trying to express himself in a very short period of time, after just having an exchange with Simon, Chris was going to recongnize the tragedy at tech regardless of his performance, and Simon was rolling his eyes because he thought chris was going for a pity vote, which he was not it was a sincere if ill timed, but the only time he had the oppurtunity to express it. Simon is an aloof, farily insensitive person who thinks he is really superior and above it all. You may have the money, but that is about all.

Clealy Simon does not recognize sincerity in others since he possesses none himself.

I agree we Americans are so touchy. Who cares what Simon says or does. When you are on live TV, if you scratched your nose it could me misconstrued as a pick.

I would vote to give Simon the benefit of the doubt. And Chris is of the age where he just might know someone at VA Tech, not the kind of guy who would look for votes this way. My heart goes out to America! We are all affected!
