Simon Cowell addresses eyerolling misunderstanding

Simon CowellAs I posted earlier today, Simon caused quite a stir on last night's American Idol when he was caught rolling his eyes in response to Chris Richardson's heartfelt mention of the Virginia Tech tragedy. Many of us have been speculating about both Chris' sincerity, and Simon's seeming insensitivity. But whatever Simon's intention while rolling his eye (and I doubted all along that it was intentionally disrespectful), he knows it didn't look good.

And that's why today Simon is explaining his actions. In his defense, Simon claims he was talking to Paula about Chris and his nasally singing, so he didn't even hear Chris make the V-Tech comments. Simon apparently rolled his eyes in response to what he was saying to Paula, rather than what Chris said.

Unfortunately for Simon, that's not how it looked to those of us watching at home.

Simon addressed the misunderstanding, saying "I did want to clear this one up because, you know, this is a very very sensitive subject. The irony is that we did want to try and set the right tone on the show. And then something like this happens, and it just starts fanning the flames."

Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe also defended Simon, stating, "This is a sad time for everyone, so it is especially disheartening that a quick camera cutaway could have been misinterpreted."

Of course, this could all have been avoided if Simon just quit chatting with Paula so much and paid closer attention during his own show.

it's about time that they got rid of sanjaia, a lot of good talant was let go because of him. the only ones that should be there are the 3 girls, they all have talant. but, lakisha is trying to be another fantashia with her sympathy about being a single-parent trying to raise her child, she got herself in that situation.i think the future idol should be "jordan" she is a sweet girl and the most talented for her age. chris or blake should be the next to go.and for Simon, he deffinitely rolled his eyes because of chris's comment. paula is listening to ryan , not him. he's not even saying anything to anyone.

Good grief. Everyone makes such a big deal out of everything, that soon we aren't going to be able to say anything unless it is read off a cue card. While I don't believe Simon rolled his eyes over the V-Tech comment, it's unreal how a big deal was made about it.

Thank God And Greyhound That He's Gone
I hope AI realizes that bringing in below par talent is how they got into this situation. Like Chicken Little and John Stevens to name a few, they have always brought people to Hollywood that have no talent and shouldn't be there. They need to weed them out before the public has an chance to vote to keep them in play..

I believe people are taking the eyes rolling all out of portion. Simon eye's was not referring to VT, it was referring to Chris singing nasally. They had just finish critiquing his song when Chris squeeze in the comment about the VT incident. And he wanted to mention that before the host starts to talk to him, and ask him about what he thought about what the judges think. After all it is his job to keep the show moving. I repeat SIMON WAS NOT ROLL IS EYES AT THE VT INCIDENT!

Yes, it's true, there are too many people in Canada and Europe who bash America like a reflex. America's paying the biggest price by far among all the Western nations in the ongoing fight against the extremists. Some of us are very aware of that. No disrespect intended.

I'm not aware of the Green Party guy who made that nasty comment. I'll have to check it out now. I can honestly tell you I've never met one single Canadian personally who ever said something so heinous. I don't know where these extremists come from. Anyway, back to the show...

Simon WAS NOT disrespecting Virginia Tech. The tape they showed tonight says it all -- he was busy talking to Paula, had no idea what nasal twang was saying at the time. So lay off Simon-haters, you're all wt this time.

And Randy (18) is right.

Yeah, Sonny, you have some soldiers in Afghanisatan, and most of your Canadian political parties want to pull them out ASAP. Be honest. You know what I'm saying is true, anti-Americanism runs amok in Canada.

If, as you say, some American nutcase calls murdering Americans "beautiful", well, that really enrages me. But when foreigners say it, like your Canadian Green Party guy, well, excuse me, but I have every right to be just as pissed.

You are right about one thing, though. BGDC should be ashamed of himself, and apologize.

I agree with you that bgdc's comments were way out of line, but two wrongs don't make a right. Please don't generalize about a few bad apples in Canada and mistakenly slander the whole country. I recall an American extremist who described the Oklahoma City bombing as "beautiful" as well. Warped minds cross all national boundaries. And please don't forget that Canadians are fighting and dying in Afghanistan too. Their numbers are smaller but their lives are just as precious.

To bgdc: whether you're Canadian or not, you should be ashamed of yourself for being so insensitive. People of all nations should feel outrage and sympathy in response to what happened at VT. Please do the right thing and apologize.

I doubt that it was intentional. Simon is always carrying on private conversations and not paying attention.
